A Jazz Kaleidoscope.
Zwei Stunden mit jede Menge neuer Alben, die sich alle mehr oder weniger mit unterschiedlichen musikalischen Formen des Jazz beschäftigen. Es erwartet euch ein Jazz Kaleidoskop. Den Auftakt macht Jose James mit seinem Album „Merry Christmas From Jose James“. Ich finde gerade die klassischen Jazz Alben von Jose James immer wunderbar, so auch dieses Album. Er ist einfach ein begnadeter Jazz Crooner. Danach geht es mit Nathan Francis weiter, einem amerikanischen Jazz-Bassisten und Komponisten, der sein neues Album „The House That Bobby Built“ mit finnischen Musikern eingespielt hat. Der Titeltrack ist eines der Highlkights des Albums, eine Hommage an den Vibrafonisten und Marimba-Spieler Bobby Hutcherson. Der Song bietet ein exquisites Marimba-Solo des immens talentierten Mikko Antila. Mit Eric Truffaz wechseln wir dann die musikalische Klangfarbe hin zu cinematischem Jazz. Auf seinem neuen Album „Clap!“ setzt der französische Trompeter seine erfolgreiche Reihe mit Jazz-Versionen von Film-Soundtrack-Klassikern fort. Auch dieses zweite Album in dieser Reihe finde ich wieder sehr gelungen. Ziemlich spannend ist auch die zweite Kollaboration von Roberto Di Gioia’s Band Web Web mit Max Herre. Das Album „Web Max II“ finde fast noch besser und musikalisch abwechslungsreicher als das erste. Eine absolute Empfehlung! Ein erneuter musikalischer Stimmungswechsel bringt uns zu Daniel Villarreal und seinem neuen Album „Lados B“. Die Songs auf dem neuen Album sind während einer Session im Oktober 2020 entsanden, wie auch schon die Songs vom Vorgänder-Album „Panama 77“ aus dem Jahr 2022. Die Session mit Daniel Villareal am Schlagzeug, Jeff Parker an der Gitarre und Ann Butters am Bass hatte ein ungeheueres musikalisches Potential, das hier nun glücklicherweise mit einem größeren Publikim geteilt wird. Eine Platte, die ich zur Zeit sehr häufig und gerne höre, sie ist einfach großartig! Dann kommen wir zu Yussef Dayes, ebenfalls ein Schlagzeuger, der in der jungen Jazz-Szene von London schon für einige Furore gesorgt hat. Bereits 2016 hat er sich mit Kamaal Williams zu „Yussef Kamaal“ zusammengetan und das Album „Black Focus“ aufgenommen, welches in der Szene Kultstatus genießt (siehe SOUL UNLIMITED Radioshow 366 vom 15.01.2017). Beim 2020 auf Blue Note Records erschienen Album „What Kinda Music“ von Tom Misch war er ebenfalls mit von der Partie. Nun hat Yussef Dayes sein erstes Solo-Album „Black Classical Music“ veröffentlicht. Ein Mammutwerk mit einer unbeschreiblichen musikalischen Vielfalt. Schlichtweg großartig und das Album der Woche! Der Saxophonist Joshua Moshe schließt sich dann mit seinem neuen Album „Inner Search“ an. Musikalisch reicht die Bandbreite hier von spätem Modal Jazz und Modern Jazz bis hin zu elektronischeren Jazz Sounds. Dies ist dann auch eine gute Überleitung zum neuen Album „Duktus“ von den Stance Brothers. Dahinter steht vor allem ein Musiker, nämlich der finnische Ausnahme Schlagzeuger Teddy Rok aka Teppo Mäkynnen, der hier nicht nur sein klassischen Instrument spielt, sondern auch Vibraphon, Synthies und gelegentlich auch Gitarre. Ein aussergewöhnliches und sehr interessantes Album mit eigenwilligen Sounds und unwiderstehlichen Drumbeats. Beim neuen Album „Palms“ von Robohands geht es dann wieder in eine etwas andere Richtung. Der Musiker und Produzent Andy Baxter widmet sich auf seinem neuen Robohands-Album dem Instrument Harfe, das auf dem Album von Rachel Horton gespielt wird. Reminiszensen an legendäre MusikerInnen wie Dorothy Ashby und Alice Coltrane sind da fast schon zwingend. Ein gelungenes und sehr schönenes Album. Zum Schluß kommen wir zum neuen Album der großartigen Hania Rani. Auf „Ghosts“ präsentiert sie uns wieder ihren klassischen Sound wie wir ihn schon von Ihrem Debütalbum „Esja“ kennen. Musik die einfach wunderschön ist. Viel Spaß beim Anhören!

A Jazz Kaleidoscope.
Two hours with lots of new albums, all more or less dealing with different musical forms of jazz. A jazz kaleidoscope awaits you. Jose James kicks things off with his album „Merry Christmas From Jose James“. I always find Jose James‘ classic jazz albums wonderful, and this album is no exception. He is simply a gifted jazz crooner. Then we continue with Nathan Francis, an American jazz bassist and composer who has recorded his new album „The House That Bobby Built“ with Finnish musicians. The title track is one of the album’s highlights, a tribute to the vibraphonist and marimba player Bobby Hutcherson. The song features an exquisite marimba solo by the immensely talented Mikko Antila. With Eric Truffaz, we then change the musical timbre to cinematic jazz. On his new album „Clap!“, the French trumpeter continues his successful series of jazz versions of classic film soundtracks. I also find this second album in this series very successful. The second collaboration between Roberto Di Gioia’s band Web Web and Max Herre is also quite exciting. The album „Web Max II“ is almost even better and musically more varied than the first one. An absolute recommendation! Another musical change of mood brings us to Daniel Villarreal and his new album „Lados B“. The songs on the new album were created during a session in October 2020, just like the songs from the previous album „Panama 77“ from 2022. The session with Daniel Villarreal on drums, Jeff Parker on guitar and Ann Butters on bass had tremendous musical potential, which is now fortunately being shared with a wider audience. It’s a record that I’m currently listening to very often and with pleasure, it’s simply great! Then we come to Yussef Dayes, another drummer who has already caused quite a stir in London’s young jazz scene. Back in 2016, he teamed up with Kamaal Williams to form „Yussef Kamaal“ and recorded the album „Black Focus“, which enjoys cult status in the scene (see SOUL UNLIMITED Radioshow 366 from 15.01.2017). He was also involved in Tom Misch’s album „What Kinda Music“, which was released on Blue Note Records in 2020. Yussef Dayes has now released his first solo album „Black Classical Music“. A mammoth work with an indescribable musical diversity. Simply great and the album of the week! Saxophonist Joshua Moshe then follows with his new album „Inner Search“. Musically, the spectrum here ranges from late modal jazz and modern jazz to more electronic jazz sounds. This is also a good transition to the new album „Duktus“ by the Stance Brothers. Behind it is one musician in particular, namely the exceptional Finnish drummer Teddy Rok aka Teppo Mäkynnen, who not only plays his classical instrument here, but also vibraphone, synthies and occasionally guitar. An unusual and very interesting album with idiosyncratic sounds and irresistible drum beats. The new album „Palms“ by Robohands takes things in a slightly different direction. The musician and producer Andy Baxter dedicates his new Robohands album to the harp, which is played on the album by Rachel Horton. Reminiscences of legendary musicians such as Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane are almost inevitable. A successful and very beautiful album. Finally, we come to the new album by the great Hania Rani.
