Willkommen in der Welt des Souls und insbesondere der Musik mit afro-karibischer Inspiration. Das Album der Woche ist „Esengo“ vom London Afrobeat Collective. Der Bandname gibt die musikalische Richtung vor: Die Band kombiniert ihren Afrobeat Sound jedoch mit einem dezenten Latin-Twist, der mit den Vocals der charismatischen Sängerin Juanita Euka seine volle Wirkung entfalten kann. Musik die sofort in die Beine geht und so sprüht aus den Rillen dieses Albums pure Lebensfreude. Dies ist Musik, die definitiv Glücksmomente erzeugen kann. Großartig!
Das neue Album von Liam Bailey ist das zweite Highlight dieser Sendung. Die Musik ist eine stimmige Kombination von Soul mit Reggae-Sounds und das Ganze kommt zudem in einem charmanten Lo-Fi Sound daher, der eine wunderbare Wärme ausstrahlt. Songs die bewegen und einem nicht mehr aus dem Kopf gehen. Brilliant!
Die Geschichte von Ata Kak ist schon ziemlich kurios. Der in Ghana geborene Musiker begibt sich auf eine Reise in die Diaspora, die ihn zuerst nach Deutschland und anschließend nach Kanada führt. Dort nimmt er ein Album auf, das er 1994 als Kassette in einer Auflage von 50 Stück veröffentlicht. Das Interesse ist enttäuschend gering und nur wenige werden verkauft. Die meisten Kassetten verschenkt er an Freunde und Verwandte. Doch 2002 nahm die Geschichte eine Wendung: Brian Shimkovitz, Gründer des Blogs und Plattenlabels Awesome Tapes from Africa, kauft eine Kopie der Kassette an einem Straßenstand in Ghana. Er war von der Musik begeistert und eine umfangreichen Suche nach Ata Kak begann. Erst 2014 war es soweit und das Album konnte als LP wiederveröffentlicht werden. Die Songs die 1994 niemand interessiert haben sind inzwischen bei Spotify millionenfach gestreamt worden. Eine späte Anerkennung für Ata Kak, dessen Musik einen einzigartigen Charme hat.
William Onyeabor war ebenfalls ein musikalischer Pionier, der als einer der ersten in der nigerianischen Musikszene mit Synthesizern und vor allem Drumcomputern arbeitete. Sein 1979 erschienenes Album „Tomorrow“ ist fabelhaft und mit „Fantastic Man“ enthält es einen der besten Songs von ihm.
David Kiledjian ist vor allem durch die Band Dowdelin bekannt geworden, die ich sehr spannend finde und daher hier schon öfters gespielt habe. Nun hat er sein erstes Solo-Album „The Otium Mixtape“ veröffentlicht. Zehn entspannte, filigrane und auch experimentelle Songs, die Charme haben. Sehr interessant!
Der nigerianische Saxophonist Bukky Leo ist mit seinem neuen Album „Obedun“ am Start, sechs Songs in Remix Versionen, u.a. von Gilles Peterson, Dennis Bovel und Leslie Lawrence. Zum Abschluß noch ein Hinweis auf das am 29. Februar im Merlin (Stuttgart) stattfindende Konzert der Band Sababa 5, das ich euch gerne empfehlen möchte.

The band name indicates the musical direction: However, the band combines its Afrobeat sound with a subtle Latin twist, which can unfold its full effect with the vocals of charismatic singer Juanita Euka. Music that immediately gets your feet moving and pure joie de vivre radiates from the grooves of this album. This is music that can definitely create moments of happiness. Great!
Liam Bailey’s new album is the second highlight of this show. The music is a harmonious combination of soul with reggae sounds and the whole thing also comes in a charming lo-fi sound that radiates a wonderful warmth. Songs that move you and you can’t get out of your head. Brilliant!
The story of Ata Kak is quite a curious one. The musician, who was born in Ghana, embarks on a journey into the diaspora, which first takes him to Germany and then to Canada. There he recorded an album, which he released as a cassette in 1994 in an edition of 50 copies. Interest was disappointingly low and only a few were sold. He gave most of the cassettes away to friends and relatives. But in 2002, the story takes a turn: Brian Shimkovitz, founder of the blog and record label Awesome Tapes from Africa, buys a copy of the cassette at a street stall in Ghana. He was enthusiastic about the music and an extensive search for Ata Kak began. It wasn’t until 2014 that the album was re-released as an LP. The songs that nobody was interested in in 1994 have since been streamed millions of times on Spotify. A belated recognition for Ata Kak, whose music has a unique charm.
William Onyeabor was also a musical pioneer who was one of the first in the Nigerian music scene to work with synthesizers and, above all, drum computers. His 1979 album „Tomorrow“ is fabulous and contains one of his best songs, „Fantastic Man“.
