Es ist wieder einmal höchste Zeit für einen „Contemporary Jazz Update“. Es sind eine ganze Reihe spannender Alben erschienen, die es vorzustellen gilt:
Die erste Neuvorstellung kommt von The Jazz Defenders, eine UK-Jazz Band aus Bristol. Die Band hat ein Faible für den klassischen Blue Note Jazz Sound der 50er und 60er Jahre, den sie mit ihren Einflüssen aus anderen Genres wie zum Beispiel HipHop fusionieren. Das ist ziemlich spannend und auch sehr tanzbar. Mit ihrem dritten Album „Memory In Motion“ haben die Jazz Defenders nach meiner Ansicht ihr bislang bestes Album veröffentlicht. Ein großartiges Album, das man sich unbedingt anhören sollte.
Mit dabei ist auch Jose James, quasi ein alter Bekannter, der letzte Woche sein inzwischen 13. Album „1978“ veröffentlicht hat. Er und seine Band sind hier wieder in Hochform zu hören und ich bin ziemlich begeistert. Am besten ihr hört selbst: Zwei sehr schöne Songs vom Album sind in dieser Radioshow dabei.
Die in Italien geborene Sängerin Afra Kane ist mit ihrem zweiten Album „Could We Be Whole“ am Start. Es ist bietet einen abwechslungsreichen und vielfältigen Stilmix aus Jazz, Soul, Folk und Pop der keine Grenzen kennt und vielversprechend klingt. Sehr schön! Danach geht es mit Kenny Barron weiter, der mit der wunderbaren Single „The Nearness Of You“ einen schönen Vorgeschmack auf sein neues Album „Beyond This Place“ gibt, das am 10. Mai erscheinen wird. Piano-Jazz in seiner schönsten Form. Passend dazu hören wir im Anschluss das Aki Takase Trio mit dem Song „Minerva’s Owl“ aus dem Live-Album „Song For Hope“, das bei BBE wiederveröffentlicht wurde.
Der meditative Spiritual Jazz von Matthew Hallsal passt dazu auch perfekt. Wir hören das tolle Titelstück seiner aktuellen 12″-EP „Bright Sparkling Light“. Es ist, eigentlich wie immer bei Matthew Halsall, großartig und eine unbedingte Empfehlung von mir.
Die Harfistin Alina Bzhezhinska hat zusammen mit dem Tenor-Saxophonisten Toni Kofi das exzellente Album „Altera Vita“ veröffentlicht. Ein musikalischer Dialog zwischen zwei doch sehr unterschiedlichen Instrumenten, der hier reduziert und sehr besinnlich ist. Ein Reset, der dringend notwendig und auch wohltuend ist. Fabelhaft!
Der philharmonische Jazz den Cassie Kinoshi mit ihrer Band Seed und dem London Contemporary Orchestra auf ihrem live aufgenommenen Album „Gratitude“ präsentiert ist wie gemacht für diese Jahreszeit. Musik von aufblühender Schönheit und voller positiver Energie!
Der finnische Pianist Olli Ahvenlahti ist mit einem neuen Album auf We Jazz Records zurück. Sein Mitte der 70er erschienenes Album „The Poet“ ist legendär und der Song „Grandma’s Rocking Chair“ ist ein zeitloser Klassiker. Auf dem neuen Album „Mirror Mirror“ ist er mit einer neuen Band zuhören und es sind einige namhafte finnische Jazz-Größen wie zum Beispiel der Trompeter Jukka Eskola mit von der Partie. Musikalisch versucht Olli Ahvenlahti mit Fender Rhodes getriebenem Jazz-Funk an die legendäre Phase von The Poet anzuschließen. Ein definitiv sehr gelungenes Album. Zum Abschluß werden die Sounds etwas experimenteller und wir sind bei Otis Sandsjö’s neuem Album „Y-Otis Tre“ angelangt. Ein außergewöhliches Album, das wirklich großartig ist und ziemlich spannend klingt! Viel Spaß beim Anhören!

It’s high time once again for a „Contemporary Jazz Update“.
A whole series of exciting albums have been released that are worth presenting:
The first new release comes from The Jazz Defenders, a UK jazz band from Bristol. The band has a soft spot for the classic Blue Note jazz sound of the 50s and 60s, which they fuse with their influences from other genres such as hip hop. It’s quite exciting and also very danceable. In my opinion, the Jazz Defenders have released their best album to date with their third album „Memory In Motion“. A great album that you should definitely listen to.
It also features Jose James, an old acquaintance who released his 13th album „1978“ last week. He and his band are back on top form here and I’m really impressed. It’s best to listen for yourself: Two very nice songs from the album are included in this radio show.
Italian-born singer Afra Kane is back with her second album „Could We Be Whole“. It offers a varied and diverse mix of styles from jazz, soul, folk and pop that knows no boundaries and sounds very promising. Very nice! Then it’s on to Kenny Barron, whose wonderful single „The Nearness Of You“ is a great foretaste of his new album „Beyond This Place“, which will be released on May 10. Piano jazz in its most beautiful form. Fittingly, we then hear the Aki Takase Trio with the song „Minerva’s Owl“ from the live album „Song For Hope“, which has been re-released by BBE.
Matthew Hallsal’s meditative spiritual jazz also fits in perfectly. We hear the great title track of his current 12″ EP „Bright Sparkling Light“. It is, as always with Matthew Halsall, great and an unconditional recommendation from me.
Harpist Alina Bzhezhinska has released the excellent album „Altera Vita“ together with tenor saxophonist Toni Kofi. A musical dialog between two very different instruments, which is reduced and very contemplative here. A reset that is urgently needed and also beneficial. Fabulous!
The philharmonic jazz that Cassie Kinoshi presents with her band Seed and the London Contemporary Orchestra on her live-recorded album „Gratitude“ is made for this time of year. Music of blossoming beauty and full of positive energy!
