Die Soul-Szene lebt!
Unter den aktuellen Veröffentlichungen gibt es einige sehr interessante Alben und Singles aus dem sehr breit gefächerten Feld der Soul Musik. Den Auftakt machen Theodor aus Darmstadt mit dem Song „Glades & Avenues“, der aktuell vom Label Sundae Soul als 7″-Single veröffentlicht wurde. Ein großartiger Song, der aus dem 2023 erschienen Debütalbum von Theodor ausgekoppelt wurde. Die Band hat einen einzigartigen Sound kreiert, den man am besten als Psychedelic Sweet Soul beschreiben kann. Demnächst wird es mehr von Theodor geben, denn das zweite Album der Band wird im November erscheinen. Man darf gespannt sein.
Sweet Soul ist generell gerade ein sehr gefragter Sound und es gibt einige Bands, die sich für dieses Genre begeistern. Das Label Penrose Records, das von Daptone Records Mitbegründer Gabriel Roth ins Leben gerufen wurde, ist eine Speerspitze dieses Trends. Die kalifornische Band Los Yesterdays gehören zu den Ersten die auf Penrose veröffentlicht haben, so zum Beispiel ihren unglaublichen TikTok Hit „Nobody’s Clown“. Zeitgleich haben sie auch auf dem Egon’s Label Now Again veröffentlicht und nun ist diesem Label auch das Los Yesterdays Debütalbum „Frozen In Time“ erschienen. Los Yesterdays sind Gabriel Rowland und Victor Benavides. Sie haben ihre persönliche Version des Sweet Soul Sounds kreiert, eine Musik die ihre Kindheit als junge Chicanos in L.A. geprägt hat. Dies ist nun in ihrem eindrucksvollen Debütalbum „Frozen In Time“ auf beste Weise dokumentiert. Großartig!
Mit Spannung habe ich auch das zweite Album von Thee Sacred Souls erwartet. Schon ihr Debüt-Album aus dem Jahr 2022 war herausragend und das Album des Jahres hier bei Soul Unlimited. Nun ist endlich das zweite Album „Got A Story To Tell“ erschienen und es kann die die hohen Erwartungen erfüllen und eventuell sogar noch übertreffen. Die Songs sind von zeitloser Schönheit, inspiriert vom Sound der 60er und 70er Jahre und dennoch fest im hier und jetzt verankert. Das Trio um Sänger Josh Lane und die beiden Musiker Alejandro Garcia und Salvador Samano wird noch von einer Reihe Gastmusiker*Innen unterstützt. Die Songs sind alle wunderbar arrangiert und der Sound ist exzellent. Ganz große Klasse!
In Frankreich hat sich ebenfalls eine kleine aber feine Soul-Szene entwickelt, die seit einiger Zeit schon immer wieder interessante Veröffentlichungen aufzuweisen hat. Neben dem hier schon oft erwähnten Label Q-Sounds Recordings hat sich mit Lovemedo Records ein weiteres kleines Label etabliert. Seine Hausband sind die Soul Seeders und die haben soeben ihr neues Album „Honey“ veröffentlicht. Mit Lucie Haddad haben die Soul Seeders eine starke Sängerin gewonnen, die perfekt mit dem Spiel der exzellenten Band harmoniert. Sehr schön!
Vor 15 Jahren erschien das Debütalbum „This Is Gizelle Smith & The Mighty Mocambos“. In 2009 hat das Album wie eine Bombe eingeschlagen wurde zu einem Szene-Hit. Zum Veröffentlichungsjubiläum hat nun das Label Legere Records das Album in einer Deluxe Version als Doppel-LP wiederveröffentlicht. Mit bisher unveröffentlichten Tracks aus den damaligen Aufnahme-Sessions, Remixen und Live-Versionen. Eine runde Sache!
Neues gibt es von einer meiner liebsten Hamburger Bands, den Hamburg Spinners, die für die Aufnahmen ihres dritten Albums „Im Scharzwald“ in die legendären MPS-Studios in Villingen-Schwenningen gegangen sind. Das Album wurde dort live eingespielt und klingt fantastisch. Es ist wieder der typische, von Carsten Meyer’s Hammond-Orgel getriebene, Mod-Jazz Sound, mit dem die Band nicht nur mich absolut begeistert. Einfach großartig!
Aus Barcelona gibt es ebenfalls Neues zu hören. Es sind Koko-Jean & The Tonics, die mit ihrem neuen Album „Love Child“ am Start sind. Die Band hat ihren Hammond-Orgel Rhythm’n’Blues Sound etwas verfeinert und klingen nun deutlich souliger, was mir sehr gut gefällt. Für den Sound dieser Band ist, wie schon erwähnt, die Hammond-Orgel ein zentrales Thema, doch es ist letztendlich die charismatische und stimmgewaltige Sängerin Koko-Jean Davis, die das entscheidende I-Tüpfelchen ausmacht.
Außerdem gibt es in dieser Episode noch The Boom Yeh zu hören, die mit dem Album „Near-Earth Objects“ ein sehr interessantes Debüt vorgelegt haben. Auch Sugaray Rayford ist mit dem neuen Album „Human Decency“ zurück, das ich für sehr gelungen halte.

The soul scene is alive!
The current releases include some very interesting albums and singles from the very diverse field of soul music. Theodor from Darmstadt kick things off with the song “Glades & Avenues”, which was recently released as a 7″ single by the Sundae Soul label. A great song that was taken from Theodor’s debut album released in 2023. The band has created a unique sound that can best be described as Psychedelic Sweet Soul. There will be more from Theodor soon, as the band’s second album will be released in November. We can look forward to it.
Sweet soul is generally a very popular sound at the moment and there are several bands who are enthusiastic about this genre. The label Penrose Records, which was launched by Daptone Records co-founder Gabriel Roth, is spearheading this trend. Californian band Los Yesterdays were among the first to release on Penrose, for example their incredible TikTok hit “Nobody’s Clown”. At the same time they also released on Egon’s label Now Again and now the Los Yesterdays debut album “Frozen In Time” has also been released on this label. Los Yesterdays are Gabriel Rowland and Victor Benavides. They have created their personal version of the sweet soul sound, a music that shaped their childhood as young Chicanos in L.A.. I was also eagerly awaiting Thee Sacred Souls‘ second album. Their debut album from 2022 was already outstanding and the album of the year here at Soul Unlimited. Now the second album “Got A Story To Tell” has finally been released and it can fulfill the high expectations and possibly even exceed them. The songs are of timeless beauty, inspired by the sound of the 60s and 70s and yet firmly anchored in the here and now. The trio around singer Josh Lane and the two musicians Alejandro Garcia and Salvador Samano is supported by a number of guest musicians. The songs are all wonderfully arranged and the sound is excellent. Really great!
A small but fine soul scene has also developed in France, which has been putting out interesting releases for some time now. In addition to the label Q-Sounds Recordings, which has often been mentioned here, another small label, Lovemedo Records, has established itself. His house band are the Soul Seeders and they have just released their new album “Honey”. With Lucie Haddad, the Soul Seeders have gained a strong singer who harmonizes perfectly with the excellent band’s playing. Very nice!
The debut album “This Is Gizelle Smith & The Mighty Mocambos” was released 15 years ago. In 2009, the album hit like a bomb and became a scene hit. To mark the anniversary of its release, the label Legere Records has now re-released the album in a deluxe version as a double LP. With previously unreleased tracks from the recording sessions at the time, remixes and live versions. A well-rounded affair!
There’s something new from one of my favorite Hamburg bands, the Hamburg Spinners, who went to the legendary MPS studios in Villingen-Schwenningen to record their third album “Im Scharzwald”. The album was recorded live there and sounds fantastic. It is once again the typical mod-jazz sound driven by Carsten Meyer’s Hammond organ, with which the band not only absolutely thrills me. Simply great!
There’s also something new to hear from Barcelona. It’s Koko-Jean & The Tonics, who are at the start with their new album “Love Child”. The band have refined their Hammond organ rhythm’n’blues sound a little and now sound much more soulful, which I really like. As already mentioned, the Hammond organ is central to the sound of this band, but it is ultimately the charismatic and powerful vocalist Koko-Jean Davis who is the decisive icing on the cake.
This episode also features The Boom Yeh, who have made a very interesting debut with their album “Near-Earth Objects”. Sugaray Rayford is also back with the new album “Human Decency”, which I think is very successful.
