Die musikalische Reise dieser Episode startet in Afrika und führt uns über den Nahen Osten in die westliche Welt.
Die erste Album-Vorstellung kommt von Santrofi aus Ghana. Auf ihrem neuen Album „Making Moves“ bleibt die Band ihrem Kurs treu und arbeitet weiter kontinuierlich an der Erneuerung des Highlife, der wichtigsten Musikrichtung Ghana’s. Mit diesem fantastischen Album hebt sich die Band auf eine bemerkenswert wohltuende Art vom aktuellen Trend der Synthetisierung afrikanischer Popmusik ab.
Ebenfalls aus Ghana stammt Florence Adooni, die mit „A.O.E.I.U.“ – An Ordinary Excercise In Unity – ihr Debüt-Album bei Philophon vorgelegt hat. Es ist eine afro-futuristische Highlife-Odyssee, die gleichermaßen ein Schritt in die Zukunft des Highlife ist und auch tief in den reichen Traditionen der ghanaischen Fra Fra Kultur verwurzelt ist. Es ist eine kühne Verschmelzung von uralten Rhythmen und avantgardistischen Grooves. Ganz große Klasse!
Vier Jahre nach ihrem Debüt melden sich die Satellites mit dem Album „Aylar“ zurück. Die Band aus Tel Aviv hat sich inzwischen zum Sextett erweitert und Rotem Bahar ist nun als Sängerin und Frontfrau zur Band hinzugekommen. Die Band hat ihren anatolischen Psychedelic Soul Sound weiter verfeinert und das Album glänzt mit großartigen Songs. Sehr empfehlenswert!
Das Album der Woche kommt von Derya Yildirim & Grup Simsek. Die in Berlin ansässige Band ist kürzlich zum zum New Yorker Label Big Crown Records gewechselt. Labelchef Leon Michaels hat das Album „Yarin Yoksa“ produziert und auch an verschiedenen Instrumenten mitgespielt. Derya Yildirims deutsch-türkische Wurzeln spiegeln sich ebenso wie die südafrikanischen und französischen Wurzeln der anderen Bandmitglieder im stark von anatolischer Musik geprägten Psychedelic Soul Sound der Band wieder. Sie bezeichnen sich selbst als „outernational“, da dies ihren Sound umfassender oder grenzübergreifender beschreibt. Mit den Songs ihres neuen Albums ist Derya Yildirim und ihrer Band ein einzigartiges und absolut frisch klingendes Werk gelungen. Großartig!
Das Collegde Of Knowledge in Melbourne ist ein australisches Independent Soul-Label, in dessen Umfeld eine Reihe sehr interessanter Bands entstanden sind. Nach Surprise Chef und Karate Boogaloo sind die Pro-Teens eine weitere Band aus diesem Umfeld, die nun mit einem spannenden Album am Start sind. Unter der Leitung von Hudson Whitlock, dem Drummer von Surprise Chef und Karate Boogaloo haben sich die Pro-Teens das Werk der HipHop Legende MF Doom vorgenommen und auf ihrem Album „MF Teen: Your Concurrence In Above Is Assumed“ von einigen seiner Stücke Versionen in ihrem eigenwilligen Instrumental Soul Sound angefertigt. Das Ergebnis finde ich ich orginell und auch ziemlich gelungen. Ein Album das Laune macht!
Zum Abschluss möchte ich euch noch das Debüt-Album von Celia Wa vorstellen. Auf „Fasade“ präsentiert uns die aus Guadeloupe stammende Künstlerin eine Musik, die von ihrer kreolischen Identität angetrieben ist, aber klanglich weit über die Grenzen der Karibik hinausreicht. Sehr schön!

The musical journey of this episode starts in Africa and takes us via the Middle East to the Western world.
The first album presentation comes from Santrofi from Ghana. On their new album “Making Moves”, the band stays true to their course and continues to work on the renewal of Highlife, Ghana’s most important music genre. With this fantastic album, the band stands out from the current trend of synthesizing African pop music in a remarkably pleasant way.
Also from Ghana is Florence Adooni, who with “A.O.E.I.U.” – An Ordinary Excercise In Unity – her debut album for Philophon. It is an Afro-futuristic highlife odyssey that is both a step into the future of highlife and deeply rooted in the rich traditions of Ghanaian Fra Fra culture. It is a bold fusion of ancient rhythms and avant-garde grooves. Very big class!
Four years after their debut, the Satellites are back with the album “Aylar”. The band from Tel Aviv has now expanded to a sextet and Rotem Bahar has joined the band as singer and front woman. The band has further refined its Anatolian psychedelic soul sound and the album shines with great songs. Highly recommended!
The album of the week comes from Derya Yildirim & Grup Simsek. The Berlin-based band recently moved to the New York label Big Crown Records. Label boss Leon Michaels produced the album “Yarin Yoksa” and also played on various instruments. Derya Yildirim’s German-Turkish roots are reflected in the band’s psychedelic soul sound, which is strongly influenced by Anatolian music, as are the South African and French roots of the other band members. They describe themselves as “outernational”, as this describes their sound more comprehensively or across borders. With the songs on their new album, Derya Yildirim and her band have succeeded in creating a unique and absolutely fresh-sounding work. Great!
The Collegde Of Knowledge in Melbourne is an Australian independent soul label in whose environment a number of very interesting bands have emerged. After Surprise Chef and Karate Boogaloo, the Pro-Teens are another band from this environment who are now at the start with an exciting album. Under the direction of Hudson Whitlock, the drummer from Surprise Chef and Karate Boogaloo, the Pro-Teens have taken on the work of hip-hop legend MF Doom and recorded it on their album “MF Teen: Your Concurrence In Above Is Assumed”, the Pro-Teens have created versions of some of his tracks in their idiosyncratic instrumental soul sound. I think the result is original and quite successful. An album that makes you happy!
Finally, I would like to introduce you to Celia Wa’s debut album. On “Fasade”, the artist from Guadeloupe presents us with music that is driven by her Creole identity, but whose sound reaches far beyond the borders of the Caribbean. Very beautiful!
