Diese Episode bietet eine große Bandbreite an Musikstilen, den Auftakt machen Pierpont & Helgeson mit „Isle Of The Damned“, einem Library-Funk Stück mit einem Latin-Vibe, das auf ihrem Debütalbum Ende des Jahres erscheinen soll. Nach Psychedelic-Soul mit Middle-Eastern-Vibe von Vuvuvu geht es direkt zu Sababa 5 und ihrem neuen Album „Nadir“. Auf ihrem vierten Alvum ist die Band wieder in Höchstform. Elf Instrumental-Songs, die sich im Spannungsfeld zwischen Psychedelischem Soul, Funk, Rock und Sounds aus dem Nahen Osten bewegen. Eine musikalische Melange die eine Magie entfaltet, der man sich nicht entziehen kann. Ich bin von diesem großartigen Album ziemlich begeistert und es ist die Platte der Woche!
Nach einer Runde mit interessanten neuen Singles geht es dann weiter mit afro-karibischen Grooves. Kap Verde, eine Inselgruppe vor der Nordwestküste Afrikas, ist bei Musik-Nerds auch für seine spannende Musikszene bekannt. Die Band Grupo Pilon hat sich da in den 1990er Jahren einen Namen gemacht. Nun sind sie mit einem neuen Album zurück. Funana ist der Kern des Sounds der Band, den sie auf „Nu Sta Li“ in einer aktualisierten und energiegeladenen Variante präsentieren. Diese Grooves sind ansteckend und machen Laune! Passend dazu gibt es im Anschluss noch ein paar Kap Verdische Rare Grooves, bevor uns dann die musikalische Reise mit Ousmane Kouyaté nach Guinea führt und anschließend mit Gyedu-Blay Ambolley nach Ghana.
Zurück in Europa finden wir das neue Album von Kokoroko, das den mutmachenden Titel „Tuff Times Never Last“ hat. Die musikalischen Einflüsse dieser bemerkenswerten Band reichen von Jazz über Afrobeat bis hin zu Soul. Die acht-köpfige Band hat einen spannenden und abwechslungsreichen Sound geschaffen, der sich in den elf Songs des Albums eindrucksvoll manifestiert. Wunderbar!
Rodina sind ein Projekt der Sängerin Aoife Hearty und dem Keyboarder Joe Tatton, der auch von The New Mastersounds bekannt ist. Auf ihrem Album „Good Company“ werden sie von Mitgliedern des Joe Tatton Trios und den Bläsern von The Filthy Six unterstützt. Das Ergebnis ist ein angenehm groovendes Album, dessen Songs meist einen souligen Sound haben, manchmal auch mit dezenten Acid-Jazz Anklängen. Sehr schön!
Zum Schluss kommt noch das aktuelle Album der finnischen Band Dalindeo. Bereits 2024 ist „Tropicalia Nordica“ erschienen, doch da das Label keinen Vertrieb in Deutschland hat, war es etwas Geduld notwendig. Nun ist es soweit und ich kann euch dieses erstklassige Album vorstellen. Die Band hat einen eigenwilligen Sound entwickelt, den ich aber sehr gut finde. Der Albumtitel könnte den Sound ganz gut beschreiben, doch hört am besten selbst!

This episode offers a wide range of musical styles, kicking off with Pierpont & Helgeson’s “Isle Of The Damned,” a library funk track with a Latin vibe that is set to appear on their debut album at the end of the year. After psychedelic soul with a Middle Eastern vibe from Vuvuvu, we move straight on to Sababa 5 and their new album “Nadir.” On their fourth album, the band is back in top form. Eleven instrumental songs that move between psychedelic soul, funk, rock, and sounds from the Middle East. A musical mélange that unfolds a magic that is impossible to resist. I’m pretty excited about this great album and it’s the record of the week!
After a round of interesting new singles, we continue with Afro-Caribbean grooves. Cape Verde, an archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa, is also known among music nerds for its exciting music scene. The band Grupo Pilon made a name for itself there in the 1990s. Now they’re back with a new album. Funana is at the core of the band’s sound, which they present in an updated and energetic version on “Nu Sta Li.” These grooves are infectious and put you in a good mood! Appropriately, we follow up with a few Cape Verdean rare grooves before our musical journey takes us to Guinea with Ousmane Kouyaté and then to Ghana with Gyedu-Blay Ambolley.

The eight-piece band has created an exciting and varied sound, which is impressively manifested in the eleven songs on the album. Wonderful!

The result is a pleasantly groovy album whose songs mostly have a soulful sound, sometimes with subtle hints of acid jazz. Very nice!
Finally, we have the latest album from Finnish band Dalindeo. “Tropicalia Nordica” was released back in 2024, but since the label has no distribution in Germany, a little patience was required. Now the time has come and I can present this first-class album to you. The band has developed an idiosyncratic sound, which I think is very good. The album title could describe the sound quite well, but it’s best to listen for yourself!
