In dieser Episode gibt es viel Soul in seiner breiten stilistischen Vielfalt zu hören, die sich über einen langen Zeitraum von den 1960er Jahren bis in die Gegenwart entwickelt hat. Den Auftakt machen aktuelle Soul-Künstler mit starken Referenzen auf den Soul der 1960er Jahre. Danach geht es zurück in diese Zeit mit teilweise bislang auf Vinyl-Single noch unveröffentlichten Aufnahmen, die beim spanischen Label Soul 4 Real in der Reserva Especial – Reihe erschienen sind. Zwei neue 7″-EPs sind aktuell erschienen, die Aufnahmen aus den Archiven der Labels Sound Stage 7, Seventy Seven und Muscle Shoals Sound präsentieren. Es ist immer wieder erstaunlich welch qualitativ hochwertige Soul-Musik in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren entstanden ist, die bis heute zum Teil unveröffentlicht war. Sehr schön!
Soul-Musik hat auch Paul Weller (The Jam / The Style Council) schon in frühen Jahren begeistert. Als Teenager hat er den Motown-Soul über die Beatles entdeckt, die Songs wie „You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me“ oder „Twist And Shout“ gecovert hatten. Nun hat er eine Compilation zusammengestellt, die sich diesem Sound widmet: „That Sweet Sweet Music“. Darauf sind großartige Songs zu finden, die auch zu Klassikern des Genres wurden.
Danach kehren wir musikalisch wieder in die Gegenwart zurück und freuen uns über das lang erwartete neue Album von Durand Jones & The Indications. Auf „Flowers“ hören wir elf Songs, welche wesentliche Eigenschaften des Souls der 1960er und 1970er Jahre in die Gegenwart transportieren. Die Songs klingen erhaben zärtlich und sind üppig arrangiert, was die Dringlichkeit der Interpretation unterstreicht. Das Wechselspiel der beiden Sänger Durand Jones und Aaron Frazer ist auch auf dem neuen Album wieder beeindruckend und ist ein weiterer Grund warum ich diese Band so bemerkenswert finde. „Fowers“ ist ein rundum gelungenes Album, das insgesamt etwas entspannter als seine Vorgänger ist, aber mit seiner emotionalen Tiefe gewinnt. Die Platte der Woche!
Wer auf der Suche nach Musik ist, die karibische Einflüsse mit Soul und auch elektronischen Klängen kombiniert, dem möchte ich das Duo DjeuhDjoah & Lieutenant Nicholson empfehlen. Auf ihrem neuen Album „Danses Divines“ findet man ganz viel davon und dies auch in bester und hochinteressanter Qualität. Ein Album mit Charme, das man nur schwer im Sitzen anhören kann, den die Songs animieren fast zwingend dazu sich im Rhythmus der Musik zu bewegen. Großartig!
Es ist Sommer und was könnte angenehmer sein als ein Sonnenuntergang am Meer? DJ Supermarket scheint diese Vorstellung zu teilen und hat nun eine zweite Folge der Compilation „The Sunset Manifesto“ zusammengestellt, die den perfekten Soundtrack dafür liefert. Das Album präsentiert 15 aktuelle Tracks, die entspannt grooven und zudem wie dafür geschaffen sind, das Sunset- und Westcoast-Feeling zu unterstützen. Einige der Songs sind sogar exklusiv auf dieser Compilation veröffentlicht worden.

This episode features a wide variety of soul music, which has developed over a long period of time from the 1960s to the present day. It kicks off with contemporary soul artists who draw heavily on the soul music of the 1960s. Then we go back to that era with recordings, some of which have never been released on vinyl singles before, which appeared on the Spanish label Soul 4 Real in the Reserva Especial series. Two new 7″ EPs have just been released, featuring recordings from the archives of the labels Sound Stage 7, Seventy Seven, and Muscle Shoals Sound. It’s always amazing what high-quality soul music was produced in the 1960s and 1970s, some of which remains unreleased to this day. Very nice!
Soul music also inspired Paul Weller (The Jam / The Style Council) in his early years. The songs sound sublimely tender and are lavishly arranged, which underscores the urgency of the interpretation. The interplay between the two singers, Durand Jones and Aaron Frazer, is once again impressive on the new album and is another reason why I find this band so remarkable. “Flowers” is an all-round successful album that is slightly more relaxed than its predecessors, but wins with its emotional depth. The record of the week!
If you’re looking for music that combines Caribbean influences with soul and electronic sounds, I recommend the duo DjeuhDjoah & Lieutenant Nicholson. Their new album “Danses Divines” has plenty of that, and in the best and most interesting quality. An album with charm that is difficult to listen to while sitting still, as the songs almost compel you to move to the rhythm of the music. Great!
It’s summer, and what could be more pleasant than a sunset by the sea? DJ Supermarket seems to share this idea and has now compiled a second installment of the compilation “The Sunset Manifesto,” which provides the perfect soundtrack for it. The album presents 15 current tracks that groove in a relaxed way and are also perfect for enhancing that sunset and West Coast feeling. Some of the songs have even been released exclusively on this compilation.
