Contemporary Jazz Update:
In dieser Episode dreht sich alles um Jazz. Die Bandbreite ist groß und reicht von Mainstream Jazz bis hin zu experimentellem Jazz, denn in der zweiten Hälfte gibt es ein ausführliches Special mit Aufnahmen des wegweisenden Labels International Anthem.
Zum Auftakt gibt es eine Runde mit zwei bemerkenswerten Vocal-Jazz Songs um dann zum ersten Album Highlight überzuleiten. Der Trompeter Till Brönner hat sich für sein neues Album „Italia“ mit Nicola Conte zusammen getan. Die beiden haben das Album gemeinsam produziert und der Titel des Albums ist Programm. Es werden ausschließlich italienische Songs neu interpretiert. Diese Versionen sind außerordentlich gut gelungen und es ist eines der besten Alben in Till Brönner’s langer Karriere geworden!
Ziemlich interessant finde ich auch das Album „Amall“ vom Rabbath Electric Orchestra, das von Francois Rabbath und seinem Sohn Sylvain geleitet wird. Die Songs sind während einer 6 Jahre langen Phase entstanden, in der die beiden Musiker gemeinsam auf Tour waren. Der gestrichene Kontrabass, in hohen Lagen gespielt, ist ein musikalisches Leitmotiv dieses Albums. Es vermittelt dem Hörer eindrucksvolle Eindrücke einer musikalischen Weltreise.
Chip Wickham ist ein gern gehörter Gast in dieser Sendung und sein neues Album ist wieder wunderbar geworden. Ein souliger Groove und wunderschöne Melodien sind die perfekte Basis für sein bislang progressivstes Album. Brillianter Jazz für die Seele!
Repetitive Klänge, die an elektronische Tanzmusik erinnern und von einem akustischen Jazz-Trio gespielt werden, sind das Markenzeichen von Gogo Penguin. Mit ihrem neuen Album „Necessary Fictions“ erweitert die Band ihr Klangspektrum. Bei einigen Stücken ist das von der Violinistin Rakhi Singh geleitete Manchester Collective zu hören Pianist Chris Illingsworth setzt dieses Mal auch verstärkt den Synthesizer ein. So entsteht ein reichhaltig erweiterter Sound, was der Band und dem neuen Album sehr gut steht. Großartig!
Danach beginnt mit dem neuen Album von Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer das International Anthem Label-Special. „Different Rooms“ ist ihr zweites Album als Duo. Die beiden Musiker*Innen arbeiten mit Synthesizer, Viola sowie elektronischen Effekten und haben eine ausgeprägte Vorliebe für Live-Sampling. Die Arbeitsweise des Duos ist sehr interessant, es entsteht eine klangliche und zeitliche Abstraktion zwischen dem was in Echtzeit gespielt wird und den aufgenommenen, bearbeiteten und collagierten Teilen der Songs. Sehr schön kommt dies beim Titeltrack „Different Rooms“ zum Ausdruck.
Zum 11-jährigen Jubiläum des Labels „international Anthem“ hat Gilles Peterson eine wunderbare Compilation zusammengestellt, welche die Essenz des umfangreichen Klangspektrums dieses innovativen Labels und seinen Künstlern sehr gut zusammenfasst. Ein perfekter Einstieg in die Klangwelt dieses Labels!
Im Nachgang gibt es noch einige Songs von den vielen bemerkenswerten Veröffentlichungen des Labels zu hören. Mit dabei ist auch ein kleiner Vorgeschmack auf das neue Album der Band Tortoise, das Ende Oktober bei International Anthem erscheinen wird.

Contemporary Jazz Update:
This episode is all about jazz. The spectrum is broad, ranging from mainstream jazz to experimental jazz, because the second half features an in-depth special with recordings from the pioneering label International Anthem.
We start with two remarkable vocal jazz songs before moving on to the first album highlight. Trumpeter Till Brönner has teamed up with Nicola Conte for his new album “Italia.” The two produced the album together, and the title says it all. It features exclusively Italian songs reinterpreted. These versions are exceptionally well done, and it has become one of the best albums in Till Brönner’s long career!
I also find the album “Amall” by the Rabbath Electric Orchestra, led by Francois Rabbath and his son Sylvain, quite interesting. The songs were written during a six-year period in which the two musicians were touring together. The bowed double bass, played in high registers, is a musical leitmotif of this album. It gives the listener impressive impressions of a musical journey around the world.
Chip Wickham is a welcome guest on this show, and his new album is once again wonderful. A soulful groove and beautiful melodies are the perfect basis for his most progressive album to date. Brilliant jazz for the soul!
Repetitive sounds reminiscent of electronic dance music, played by an acoustic jazz trio, are the trademark of Gogo Penguin. With their new album “Necessary Fictions,” the band expands its sound spectrum. The Manchester Collective, led by violinist Rakhi Singh, can be heard on some tracks, and pianist Chris Illingsworth makes greater use of the synthesizer this time around. This creates a richly expanded sound that suits the band and the new album very well. Great!
Next up is the International Anthem Label Special with the new album by Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer. “Different Rooms” is their second album as a duo. The two musicians work with synthesizers, viola, and electronic effects and have a distinct preference for live sampling. The duo’s working method is very interesting, creating a sonic and temporal abstraction between what is played in real time and the recorded, edited, and collaged parts of the songs. This is beautifully expressed in the title track “Different Rooms.”
To mark the 11th anniversary of the label “International Anthem,” Gilles Peterson has put together a wonderful compilation that perfectly captures the essence of the extensive sound spectrum of this innovative label and its artists. It’s the perfect introduction to the sound world of this label!
Afterwards, there are a few more songs from the label’s many remarkable releases to listen to. There’s also a little preview of the new album by the band Tortoise, which will be released by International Anthem at the end of October.
