Clutchy Hopkins ist ein Mysterium. Um seine Person und Identität ranken sich teils abgedrehte Geschichten. Er ist angeblich ein Musiker und Multi-Instrumentalist aus Kalifornien. Sein Aufenthaltsort ist nicht bekannt , es wird vermutet, dass er sich in der Mojave-Wüste versteckt hält. Andere vermuten, daß Clutchy Hopkins nur ein Pseudonym sei, hinter dem sich evt. DJ Shadow, Madlib, Shawn Lee oder Money Mark verbirgt. Eins ist jedoch sicher: Seine verschrobenen Instrumentals haben Charme und ich höre sie immer wieder gerne. Sein neues Album „Story Teller“ und auch sein Album „Fascinating Fingers“ zusammen mit Shawn Lee aus dem Herbst letzten Jahres gibt es in dieser Soul Unlimited Sendung zu hören.
Die australische Band Bamboos hat ihr inzwischen 4. Album veröffentlicht. Das schlicht „4“ benannte Album ist eine geballte Ladung heißer Party-Funk und Uptempo-Soul, der vor allem durch die Vocals von Kylie Auldist besticht. Die Sängerin ist ein echter Gewinn für die Band.
Lang erwartet wurde „I Learned The Hard Way“, das ebenfalls 4. Album, von Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. Keine andere Band hat sich so intensiv mit dem Soul und Funk der 60er und 70er Jahre beschäftigt und haucht ihm so gekonnt und meisterhaft neues Leben ein. Die Arrangements des neuen Albums sind üppiger instrumentiert (Streicher!) und pointierter. Der Sound der Band klingt authentisch, was nicht zuletzt der Produktion von Bosco Mann (aka Gabriel Roth) zu verdanken ist. Das Daptone Studio, das von allen Musiker gemeinsam aufgebaut und eingerichtet wurde, mit unzähligen orginal anlalogen Aufnahmegeräten, tut das seinige. Ich bin absolut begeistert! Ein heißer Anwärter auf das Album des Jahres.
Das Numero-Label ist eine erstklassige Adresse für sehr gut zusammengestellte Compilations, vor allem mit rarem Soul und Funk aus den Sechziger- und Siebziger Jahren. Die Compilation-Reihe „Good God“ hat sich dem Gospel gewidmet und besticht vor allem mit superben Gospel-Soul Aufnahmen, die mit einem kräftigen Schuss animalischen Funk versetzt sind. Die zweite Folge „Good God – Born Again Funk“ ist gerade erschienen. Zur ausführlichen Vorstellung dieses empfehlenswerten Albums gesellen sich auch noch ein paar Songs von der ersten Folge.
Zum Abschluss gibt es dann noch ein kleines Northern Soul Mix-Set.
