Ein bunter Mix aus guten Vibes!
Nach einer kurzen Runde mit psychedelischen Soul-Instrumentals gibt es gleich das erste Album-Highlight: Von Sun Atlas ist bei Mocambo Records die „Mythical „Lost“ EP“ erschienen. Die mysteriöse Band entführt uns einmal mehr in ihren bizarren Sound-Kosmos aus psychedelischen Space-Funk Sounds mit Ethio-Jazz und Afrobeat Elementen. Eine spannende Reise, die auf ganzer Länge überzeugt.
The Diasonics haben sich mit ihrer unverwechselbaren Mischung aus cineastischem Funk, orientalisch angehauchten Melodien, instrumentalem Hip-Hop und analogem Soul einen festen Platz in der globalen Funk-Szene erobert. Das Album „Ornithology“ markiert einen neuen Abschnitt: Die Songs sind alle nach Vogelarten benannt. Durch diese Vogelmotive inspiriert, vermittelt das Album, sowohl thematisch als auch musikalisch, Ideen von Bewegung und Freiheit. Ein spannendes Album das mich sofort begeistert hat.
Danach gibt es einen Richtungswechsel und neue Vibes. Der französische Keyboarder Guillaume Metenier hat sich für sein neues Album mit den Dub Sheperds zusammen getan. Auf „Blue House Rockin'“ präsentieren sie eine wohlklingende Sammlung von ausgewählten Cover-Versionen und Orginal-Kompositionen. Das ganze wie immer in einem souligen Reggae-Sound. Sehr schön gemacht!
Dazu passt dann auch die vor kurzem bei Soul-Jazz Records veröffentlichte Compilation mit Stücken des legendären Studio One Keyboarders Jackie Mittoo. Die auf „Reggae Magic“ versammelten Songs von ihm machen dem Album-Titel alle Ehre. Magisch!
Ein erneuter Richtungswechsel bringt uns Soul Vibes. Nach einigen interessanten aktuellen Single-Veröffentlichungen geht es mit dem neuen Album der österreichischen Band Sladek weiter. Mit dem Album „Things Gotta Change“ setzt die Band ihre musikalische Neuausrichtung konsequent fort, die sie bereits mit ihrer letzten EP „Loveless“ begonnen haben. Die psychedelischen 60er Jahre Sounds passen sehr gut zu den souligen Songs und schaffen eine neue Klangsprache für die Band. Ich finde das ist Ihnen mit dem neuen Album wirklich überzeugend gelungen.
Weitere neue Alben kommen von der australischen Band Mondo Freaks, die auf ihrem Debütalbum auf unspektakuläre Weise einen handwerklich exzellenten Boogie und Funk Sound präsentieren. In eine etwas andere Richtung gehen die Vibes denen sich Al Sunny gewidmet hat. Auf seinem neuen Album „Summer End“ kann man den Sommer-Erinnerungen mit schönen Westcoast-Vibes nochmals Revue passieren lassen. Wunderbar!
Zum Schluss verabschieden wir uns von D’Angelo, der diese Welt am 14. Oktober nach langer Krankheit verlassen hat. Sein Album „Voodoo“, das vor 25 Jahren erschienen ist, war und ist die Blaupause des Neo-Soul Sounds. Ein grandioses Album!

A colorful mix of good vibes!
After a brief round of psychedelic soul instrumentals, we come to the first highlight of the album: Sun Atlas‘ Mythical “Lost” EP, released on Mocambo Records. Once again, this mysterious band whisks us away into their bizarre sound cosmos of psychedelic space funk sounds with elements of Ethio-jazz and Afrobeat. An exciting journey that is convincing throughout.
The Diasonics have secured a firm place in the global funk scene with their unmistakable mix of cinematic funk, oriental-inspired melodies, instrumental hip-hop, and analog soul. The album “Ornithology” marks a new chapter: the songs are all named after bird species. Inspired by these bird motifs, the album conveys ideas of movement and freedom both thematically and musically. An exciting album that immediately captivated me.
Next up is a change of direction and new vibes. French keyboardist Guillaume Metenier has teamed up with the Dub Sheperds for his new album. On “Blue House Rockin‘,” they present a melodious collection of selected cover versions and original compositions. As always, the whole thing is wrapped up in a soulful reggae sound. Very nicely done!
This fits in well with the compilation recently released by Soul-Jazz Records featuring tracks by legendary Studio One keyboardist Jackie Mittoo. The songs by him collected on “Reggae Magic” live up to the album title. Magical!
Another change of direction brings us soul vibes. After some interesting recent single releases, we continue with the new album by Austrian band Sladek. With the album “Things Gotta Change,” the band consistently continues the musical reorientation they began with their last EP, “Loveless.” The psychedelic 60s sounds fit very well with the soulful songs and create a new sound language for the band. I think they have really succeeded in doing this convincingly with the new album.
Further new albums come from the Australian band Mondo Freaks, who present an unspectacular but technically excellent boogie and funk sound on their debut album. Al Sunny has devoted himself to a slightly different vibe. On his new album “Summer End,” you can relive your summer memories with beautiful West Coast vibes. Wonderful!
Finally, we say goodbye to D’Angelo, who left this world on October 14 after a long illness. His album “Voodoo,” released 25 years ago, was and remains the blueprint for the neo-soul sound. A magnificent album!
