Focus Jazz: Old School trifft New School!
Zum Auftakt gibt es einige Klassiker zu hören. Was könnte schöner sein als „Moanin'“ von Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers und „So What“ von Miles Davis? Danach geht es weiter mit Kenny Baron. Sein Song „In The Fast Lane“ mit Vocals von Kurt Elling ist aus seinem neuen Album „Songbook“, das im November erscheinen wird. Auf dieses Album freue ich mich schon sehr!
Das erste Album Highlight dieser Episode ist die 8. Folge der Compilation-Reihe „Peace Chant“ die beim Label Tramp Records erscheint. Tobias Kirmayer hat sich, wie schon bei der vorherigen Folge, wieder auf Produktionen aus Deutschland fokussiert, die bei kleinen Labels oder im Selbstverlag veröffentlicht wurden. Diese Folge hat zudem einige überraschende Aufnahmen aus der Heimat von Soul Unlimited zu bieten, die aus Reutlingen und Tübingen kommen. Zum einen ist dies die Big Band des Bildungszentrum Nord (BZN) aus Reutlingen und zum anderen die Band Brainstream mit der Tübinger Vibraphon -Legende Dizzy Krisch. Ich bin begeistert!
Danach wird die Musik internationaler und wir hören einen weiteren legendären Musiker am Vibraphon: Es ist Mulatu Astatke, der Pionier des Ethio-Jazz. Auf seinem neuen Album bei Strut Records präsentiert er Songs aus dem Repertoire seiner gut 50-jährigen Karriere in neuen Arrangements, aufgenommen in den RAK Studios in London. Das Album „Mulatu Plays Mulatu“ wurde von Dexter Story produziert. Eine feine Sache!
Nach den Vertretern der Old School wird es Zeit für die New School. Neben Alina Bzhezhinska & Toni Kofie, die mit „Altera Vita“ ein Stück von ihrem letzten Album in einer gelungenen Remix-Version präsentieren sind vor allem wieder Künstler vom wegweisenden Label International Anthem dabei. Von Tortoise und SML gibt es Stücke die ihre kommenden Alben ankündigen, auf die wir gespannt sein dürfen.
Das Album der Woche ist „Off The Record“ von Makaya McCraven. Vier zuvor digital veröffentlichte EPs sind auf diesem Doppelalbum zusammen gefasst. Jede EP wurde an einem anderen Ort live aufgenommen. Die Live-Sessions sind frei improvisiert, die aufnahmen wurden im Anschluss von Makaya McCreaven im Studio nachbearbeitet. Er definiert seine Musik als offenes System zwischen Improvisation, Sampling und digitaler Post-Produktion. Ich finde das Ergebnis dieses Prozesses ist auf diesem Album wieder überzeugend gelungen. Großartig!
Ein weiteres Album Highlight kommt vom Münchner Label Squama. Es ist das Album „Trio“ von Simon Popp. Zusammen mit zwei weiteren Schlagzeugern hat er ein hochinteressantes Album eingespielt. Die drei Drummer erzeugen im Zusammenspiel eine wunderbare, dezent rhythmische Klangpoesie. Ein Album das man sich unbedingt anhören sollte. Viel Vergnügen beim Anhören dieser Episode!

Focus Jazz: Old school meets new school!
We kick things off with a few classics. What could be better than “Moanin’” by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and “So What” by Miles Davis? Then we move on to Kenny Baron. His song “In The Fast Lane,” featuring vocals by Kurt Elling, is from his new album “Songbook,” which will be released in November. I’m really looking forward to this album!
The first album highlight of this episode is the eighth installment of the compilation series “Peace Chant,” released by the Tramp Records label. As in the previous episode, Tobias Kirmayer has once again focused on productions from Germany that were released by small labels or self-published. This episode also features some surprising recordings from the home of Soul Unlimited, which come from Reutlingen and Tübingen. One is the Big Band of the Bildungszentrum Nord (BZN) from Reutlingen and the other is the band Brainstream with Tübingen vibraphone legend Dizzy Krisch. I’m thrilled!

He defines his music as an open system between improvisation, sampling, and digital post-production. I think the result of this process is once again convincingly successful on this album. Great!
Another album highlight comes from the Munich label Squama. It is the album “Trio” by Simon Popp. Together with two other drummers, he has recorded a highly interesting album.
