In dieser Episode begeben wir uns wieder auf eine musikalische Reise in die Karibik und nach Afrika. Die karibischen Inseln Guadeloupe, Barbados, Trinidad und Tobago sind unter Musik-Liebhabern für ihre reichhaltige und hochinteressante Musikszene bekannt. Hier starten wir unsere musikalische Reise.
Das erste Album-Highlight ist von den Telstars, deren Album „Orbiting“ vom portugiesischen Label Mad About Records wiederveröffentlicht wurde. Die Telstars spielen wunderbaren Soul & Funk Sound, der von afro-amerikanischen Vorbildern inspiriert ist und in Verbindung mit einigen karibischen Einflüssen einen besonderen Charme hat. Songs wie „World Of Tomorrow“ oder „Kool Reggae“ gehören zu den Höhepunkten des Albums.
Danach geht es weiter nach Guadeloupe. Dort hatte der visionäre Produzent Henri Debs Ende der 1950er Jahre das Label „Disques Debs International“ gegründet. Das Label war über 50 Jahre aktiv und hat in dieser Zeit mehr als 300 7″-Singles und 200 LP’s veröffentlicht. Die dynamische Entwicklung der Musik-Szene auf den karibischen Inseln wurde maßgeblich durch dieses Label gefördert und vorangetrieben. Das Londoner Label Strut Records hat vor ein paar Monaten eine dritte Compilation mit Songs aus dem umfangreichen Katalog von Disque Debs International zusammengestellt. Die neue Folge fokussiert sich auf die Phase des modernen Gwo-Ka, Zouk und Boogie in den 1980er Jahren. Die Zusammenstellung, die von Hugo Mendez und Emile Omar kuratiert wurde, ist wieder sehr gut gelungen und wie die beiden Vorgänger Alben in dieser Reihe absolut essentiell!
Auf unserer musikalischen Reise verlassen wir nun die Karibik und es geht weiter auf den afrikanischen Kontinent. In den frühen 1980er Jahren gründete sich in Simbabwe die Zig-Zag Band. Die Band entwickelte einen kühnen und ziemlich originellen Stil. Komplexe Gitarrenlinien, mitreißende Tanzrhythmen und sowohl raue als auch gefühlvolle Shona-Gesänge prägten diesen Genre-Grenzen überschreitenden Sound, der als Chigiyo-Musik bekannt werden sollte. Ein Sound der an Reggae erinnert, aber irgendwie anders ist und definitiv einen bleibenden Eindruck hinterlässt. Das Label Analog Africa hat nun eine Compilation mit 13 Songs der Zig-Zag Band herausgebracht, der das in den Jahren 1987-1998 entstandene Werk der Band vortrefflich porträtiert. Dieses Album ist definitiv eine Entdeckung und die Platte der Woche!
Danach geht unsere Reise durch Afrika fort und machen Station in Mali, wo wir Musik von Ousmane Kouyate hören und von Saxophist Tidiani Kone, der ebenfalls aus Mali stammt, sich aber mit dem legendären Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou aus Benin zusammen getan hat. Weitere Stationen sind Kamerun mit Jo Tongo, Südafrika mit Mpharanyana And The Peddlers und Nigeria mit Myke Moul. Mit Lontra feat. Sir Jean ist auch ein globales Projekt dabei, das stark von afrikanischen Sounds inspiriert ist. Viel Vergnügen beim Anhören dieser Episode!

In this episode, we embark on another musical journey to the Caribbean and Africa. The Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe, Barbados, Trinidad, and Tobago are known among music lovers for their rich and fascinating music scene. This is where we begin our musical journey.
The first album highlight is from the Telstars, whose album “Orbiting” has been re-released by the Portuguese label Mad About Records. The Telstars play wonderful soul & funk sounds inspired by African-American role models, which, combined with some Caribbean influences, have a special charm. Songs like “World Of Tomorrow” and “Kool Reggae” are among the highlights of the album.
Next, we head to Guadeloupe. There, visionary producer Henri Debs founded the label “Disques Debs International” in the late 1950s. The label was active for over 50 years and released more than 300 7″ singles and 200 LPs during that time. On our musical journey, we now leave the Caribbean and continue on to the African continent. In the early 1980s, the Zig-Zag Band was formed in Zimbabwe. The band developed a bold and rather original style. Complex guitar lines, rousing dance rhythms, and both raw and soulful Shona vocals characterized this genre-crossing sound, which would become known as Chigiyo music. A sound reminiscent of reggae, but somehow different and definitely leaving a lasting impression. The label Analog Africa has now released a compilation of 13 songs by the Zig-Zag Band, which excellently portrays the band’s work from 1987-1998. This album is definitely a discovery and the record of the week!
