It’s Soul Time!
In den letzten Wochen sind einige interessante Alben aus dem Soul Bereich erschienen. Die musikalische Bandbreite ist groß und es verspricht eine abwechslungsreiche Episode zu werden.
Das erste Album-Highlight kommt von Kronstad 23, einer Band aus Norwegen, die mit „Dodehavet“ bereits ihr drittes Album veröffentlicht haben. Musikalisch agieren sie im Bereich von Jazz, Soul, Folk, Afroabeat, Rock und Raga und entwickeln aus diesem recht diversen Stilen einen ungezwungen und entspannt wirkenden Sound. Hypnotische Grooves, gepaart mit cineastischen Klängen und analoger Wärme.
Adrian Younge ist in den letzten Jahren hauptsächlich mit der Reihe Jazz Is Dead in Erscheinung getreten. Nun ist er verstärkt auch wieder mit Solo-Produktionen aktiv. Mit dem Album „Younge“ hat er quasi sein Opus Magnum geschaffen. Sein Album definiert die Bedeutung der Orchesterkomposition für Jazz und Hip-Hop neu. Ein instrumentales Statement, das Younge nicht nur als Komponisten, sondern auch als Architekten einer neuen Musiksprache positioniert. Das Album ist mit umfassenden historischem Bewusstsein komponiert, aus der Perspektive des heutigen Produzenten, der Neuinterpretation, Dekonstruktion und Wiederverwendung vorweg nimmt. Ein wahrlich großartiges Album!
Auf das neue Album der indonesischen Band Thee Marloes habe ich mich schon sehr gefreut. Soul mit sanften Melodien und einem breiten Spektrum an musikalischen Klangfarben mit indonesischem Flair geben der Musik dieses Trios einen ganz besonderen Charme. Auf „Di Hotel Malibu“ haben sie dies noch vertieft und weiterentwickelt. Ein wunderbares Album!
Die holländische Band Another Taste setzen im digitalen Zeitalter ganz bewusst auf analoge Produktion. Nun haben sie ihr zweites Album herausgebracht und vertiefen ihre musikalische Reise durch Soul, Disco und Boogie. Sie zaubern einen elektrisierenden Sound der sowohl zeitlos als auch unvorhersehbar ist und die Zuhörer mit jedem Anhören tiefer in das Universum der Band hineinzieht. Ein rundum gelungenes und vor allem auch tanzbares Album!
Das Jahr 2026 ist noch nicht einmal zur Hälfte rum und da taucht schon ein erster Favorit für das Album des Jahres auf: Es ist Brian Jackson, der sich mit den Masters At Work zusammen getan hat. Das Album „Now More Than Ever“ präsentiert 19 Songs, die Brian Jackson und Gil Scott-Heron in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren geschaffen haben, in neuen Interpretationen. Brian Jackson wurde hierbei von einer beeindruckenden Riege an Künstlern unterstützt, die zu den jeweiligen Songs beigetragen haben. Dies und die exzellente Produktion von Louie Vega und Kenny „Dope“ Gonzales aka Masters At Work machen dies Album zu einem einzigartigen Erlebnis. Die Songs sind zeitlose Klassiker in einem erfrischend neuem Sound, die sich sowohl auf der Stereoanlage zu Hause oder auf der Tanzfläche im Club genießen lassen. Absolute Spitzenklasse, das Album der Woche!
Funky groovend geht es weiter mit der Band The Funkin‘ Machine aus Neapel. Bereits im Dezember letzten Jahres ist ihr zweites Album „Napoletanite“ erschienen, das aber schnell vergriffen war und nachgepresst werden musste. Nun ist es soweit und das Album kann auch hier vorgestellt werden. Sechs Songs, deren Bandbreite von Cosmic Disco über Jazz-Funk bis hin zu psychedelischen Fusionen aus Afro-Italo und Mediterranean Boogie reicht. Ziemlich funky und tanzbar, was will man mehr?
Ebenfalls aus Neapel stammt die Band Psyché, die bei Four Flies ihr zweites Album veröffentlicht hat. Ihr psychedelischer Funk verweist zugleich auf eine Vielzahl mediterraner Einflüsse, die von Südeuropa über den Balkan und Anatolien bis hin zum Maghreb reichen. „Psyché II“ ist die Essenz dieser Reise durch die Kulturen, die zugleich im Mittelmeerraum verwurzelt und offen für die Welt. Viel Vergnügen beim Anhören dieser Episode.

It’s Soul Time!
Over the past few weeks, several interesting soul albums have been released. The musical range is wide, and it promises to be a varied episode.
The first album highlight comes from Kronstad 23, a band from Norway that has already released its third album, “Dodehavet.” Musically, they operate in the realms of jazz, soul, folk, Afrobeat, rock, and raga, developing a laid-back and relaxed sound from these diverse styles. Hypnotic grooves paired with cinematic sounds and analog warmth.
In recent years, Adrian Younge has primarily made his mark with the Jazz Is Dead series. Now he is increasingly active again with solo productions. With the album “Younge,” he has essentially created his magnum opus. His album redefines the significance of orchestral composition for jazz and hip-hop. An instrumental statement that positions Younge not only as a composer but also as an architect of a new musical language. The album is composed with a comprehensive historical awareness, from the perspective of today’s producer who anticipates reinterpretation, deconstruction, and reuse. A truly magnificent album!
I’ve been really looking forward to the new album by the Indonesian band Thee Marloes. Soul with gentle melodies and a wide spectrum of musical timbres infused with Indonesian flair give this trio’s music a very special charm. On “Di Hotel Malibu,” they have deepened and further developed this sound. A wonderful album!
The Dutch band Another Taste deliberately focuses on analog production in the digital age. Now they’ve released their second album and are deepening their musical journey through soul, disco, and boogie. They conjure up an electrifying sound that is both timeless and unpredictable, drawing listeners deeper into the band’s universe with every listen. An all-around successful and, above all, danceable album!

The funky groove continues with the band The Funkin’ Machine from Naples. Their second album, “Napoletanite,” was released back in December of last year, but it quickly sold out and had to be repressed. Now the time has come, and the album can be featured here as well. Six songs ranging from cosmic disco to jazz-funk to psychedelic fusions of Afro-Italo and Mediterranean boogie. Pretty funky and danceable—what more could you want?
Also hailing from Naples is the band Psyché, who have released their second album on Four Flies. Their psychedelic funk draws on a variety of Mediterranean influences, ranging from Southern Europe through the Balkans and Anatolia to the Maghreb. “Psyché II” is the essence of this journey through cultures that are both rooted in the Mediterranean region and open to the world.
