In dieser Episode steht wieder der Soul im Fokus und wir begeben uns auf einen Streifzug durch die reichhaltige Bandbreite dieses Genres.
Ein Schwerpunkt-Thema ist die Musik der großartigen Sängerin Ruby Andrews. Sie ist am 13. August 2026 im Alter von 79 Jahren gestorben. Ruby Andrews war eine ausdrucksstarke Sängerin und sie bleibt ein wichtiger Teil der Geschichte des Chicago-Souls. Ihre besten Aufnahmen sind bemerkenswert gut gealtert und neue Generationen von Deep-Soul Fans werden sie immer wieder neu entdecken. Rest in Power, Ruby!
Mit den Womack Sisters begrüßen wir vielversprechende neue Talente, die aus einer Familie stammen die Musik-Geschichte geschrieben hat. Zeomani, BG und Kucha sind die Töchter von Cecil und Linda Womack, die als Womack & Womack in den 1980er Jahren einige veritable Hits hatten. Auch ihr Großvater Sam Cooke ist in der Soul-Geschichte eine bestens bekannte Größe. Mit dem Team von Daptone Records haben die Womack Sisters die perfekte Ergänzung gefunden und ihr letzte Woche erschienenes Debüt-Album ist außerordentlich gut gelungen. Ein modernes Soul-Album, das die Erfahrung aus über 60 Jahren Soul-Musik in die Gegenwart transportiert. Klassische Sounds, die zeitgenössische Stimmungen vermitteln. Die Songs sind wunderbar arrangiert und in bestem analogen Sound aufgenommen. Musik zum genießen, grandios!
Wenn man die Credits eines Albums aufmerkasam studiert, dann wird einem der Name Marco Benevento eventuell schon das ein aoder andere Mal aufgefallen sein, insbesondere bei Veröffentlichungen aus dem Umfeld von Big Crown Records. Nun hat Marco Benevento auf diesem Label sein neues Solo-Album „Glera“ veröffentlicht. Ein Projekt das er in einem Zeitraum von gut drei Jahren entwickelt hat. Es ist ein genreübergreifendes Album geworden, das Jazz, Soul und die elastischen Bässe des Reggae mit einem Gefühl grenzenloser Möglichkeiten verbindet. Die Inspiriration von italienischen Filmusiken ist dem durchaus anzuhören. Musik die sich filmisch entfalet ohne dabei gekünstelt zu wirken. Sehr schön!

With the Womack Sisters, we welcome promising new talent from a family that has made music history. Zeomani, BG, and Kucha are the daughters of Cecil and Linda Womack, who had several veritable hits as Womack & Womack in the 1980s. Their grandfather, Sam Cooke, is also a household name in soul history. The Womack Sisters have found the perfect fit with the team at Daptone Records, and their debut album, released last week, is exceptionally well done. If you’ve studied an album’s credits closely, you may have come across the name Marco Benevento once or twice, especially on releases associated with Big Crown Records. Now Marco Benevento has released his new solo album, “Glera,” on this label. It’s a project he developed over the course of a good three years. The result is a genre-spanning album that blends jazz, soul, and the elastic basslines of reggae with a sense of boundless possibilities. The inspiration drawn from Italian film scores is definitely audible. It’s music that unfolds cinematically without ever feeling contrived. Very beautiful!
