It’s Soul Time!
Es gibt viel Soul und auch etwas Funk in dieser Sendung. Das Album der Woche ist das Debüt von Jalen Ngonda, das bei Daptone Records erschienen ist. Der talentierte Sänger und Songwriter hat im Team mit einer Reihe exzellenter Musiker aus der Daptone – Familie ein hervorragendes Album geschaffen. Es verbindet anspruchsvolle Arrangements und introspektive Texte mit Motown-Raffinesse, wie man sie schon lange nicht mehr gehört hat. Einfach großartig!
Jewel Bass war in den 1970er Jahren beim Label Malaco als Background-Sängerin beschäftigt und war auf zahlreichen Aufnahmen der Haupt-Künstler des Labels zu hören. Während dieser Zeit sind auch einige Aufnahmen entstanden, die Jewel Bass als Lead-Sängerin präsentierten. Diese wunderbaren Aufnahmen sind nun beim spanischen Label Soul4Real auf einer Vinyl-Compilation erschienen. Sehr schön!
Gibt es eine Northern Soul Szene in Tel Aviv? Die überraschende Antwort ist: Ja, die gibt es! Für Soul Fans, die in der Stadt sind, ist der Tel Aviv Soul Club die erste Adresse. Der Club wurde vom DJ Yashiv Cohen initiiert, der 2006 die Brüder Neeman dazu brachte ihre riesigen Soul-Sammlungen dem Publikum in Tel Aviv vorzuspielen. Cohen, der auch Sänger der Men Of North Country war, hatte auch die Idee eine reine Soulband zu gründen. Die Neemann Brüder, deren Name in Englisch „Faithful“ bedeutet, sind mit von der Partie und der Bandname „The Faithful Brothers“ war daher naheliegend. Nach einigen Singles ist nun das Debüt-Album bei Mr. Mellow’s Music erschienen. Es glänzt mit einer Reihe astreiner Northern Soul Stomper, die gleich in Heavy Rotation laufen. Definitiv ein rundum gelungenes Album, das ich euch wärmstens empfehlen kann!
Kelly Finnigan von den Monophonics hat das neue, zweite Album der Sextones produziert. Die Musiker dieser Band sind auch durch einige andere Bands bereits bekannt geworden, die ich hier schon öfters vorgestellt habe: So sind zum Beispiel Mark Sexton und Alexander Korostinski auch bei der Whatitdo Archive Group aktiv und Daniel Weiss ist der neue Drummer des Delvon Lamarr Organ Trios. Das neue Album „Love Can’t Be Borrowed“ ist eine klangliche Liebeserklärung an den Soul der späten 60er und frühen 70er Jahre. Das Album entstand in zahlreichen Aufnahmesessions in Finnigans Transistor Sound Studio, über einen Zeitraum von zwei Jahren. Es glänzt mit seinem authentischen analogen Sound, ausgefeilten Arrangements und gefühlvollen Songs. Fabelhaft!
Zum Schluss wird es dann ziemlich funky! The Funk Revolution, eine Band um den Musiker Joel Ricci aka Lucky Brown, haben gleich zwei Alben veröffentlicht. Auf „Don’t Go Away“ und „Space Dream“ finden wir die komplette „Space Dream“ Kollektion in neu abgemischten Versionen plus einiger bislang unveröffentlichter Songs. Alles ist purer Funk, der auch knarzig klingen darf und soll! Viel Spaß beim Anhören!

It’s Soul Time!
There is a lot of soul and also some funk in this show. The album of the week is the debut of Jalen Ngonda, released by Daptone Records. The talented singer and songwriter has created an excellent album in team with a number of excellent musicians from the Daptone – family. It combines sophisticated arrangements and introspective lyrics with Motown sophistication not heard in a long time. Simply great!
Jewel Bass was employed by the Malaco label as a background vocalist in the 1970s and was featured on numerous recordings by the label’s main artists. During this time, several recordings were also made that featured Jewel Bass as a lead vocalist. These wonderful recordings have now been released on a vinyl compilation by the Spanish label Soul4Real. Very nice!
Is there a Northern Soul scene in Tel Aviv? The surprising answer is: yes, there is! For soul fans who are in town, the Tel Aviv Soul Club is the place to go. The club was initiated by DJ Yashiv Cohen, who in 2006 brought the Neeman brothers to play their huge soul collections to Tel Aviv audiences. Cohen, who was also the singer of the Men Of North Country, also had the idea of forming an all-soul band. The Neemann brothers, whose name means „Faithful“ in English, joined in, so the band name „The Faithful Brothers“ was obvious. After a couple of singles, the debut album is out now on Mr. Mellow’s Music. It shines with a series of straight Northern Soul Stomper, which run immediately in heavy rotation. Definitely an all-around great album that I highly recommend!
