It’s Soul Time!
Gut viereinhalb Jahre nach dem grandiosen Album „1634 Lexington Ave.“ gibt es ein neues Album von Carlton Jumel Smith. Dieses Mal hat er sich mit der französischen Band The Soul Seeders zusammen getan, der Hausband des Labels Lovemedo Records. Das Album „Pleasure“ ist zwar mit rund 22 Minuten Spielzeit kurz und knackig geworden, aber es ist wieder typischer Carlton Jumel Smith Sound. Der Mann hat einfach eine begnadete Soul-Stimme. Fabelhaft! Ob das Vinyl-Album auch in Deutschland erhältlich sein wird, ist aktuell nicht bekannt. Auf jeden Fall kann es aber via Mailorder beim Label Lovemedo Records bestellt werden.
Tobias Kirmayer hat eine weitere Folge der Compilation Reihe „Can You Feel It?“ zusammengestellt. Im Fokus stehen hier Modern Soul, Disco und Boogie. Auch die vierte Folge bietet wieder einige musikalische Highlights und Überraschungen: Gleich zum Auftakt gibt es mit Matter Of Taste eine Band aus dem schwäbischen Örtchen Gemmrigheim, das nördlich von Stuttgart am Neckar liegt. Von ihrem einzigen Album „It’s Only A Matter Of Taste“, das 1979 veröffentlicht wurde, hat Tobias „Step By Step“ ausgewählt. Ein würdiger Auftakt für die Compilation und ein großartiger Song!
Die Macher des Labels „Golden Rules“ aus Leibzig kuratieren die Compilation-Reihe „The Originals“, die sich auf aktuelle Produktionen aus der Soul & Funk-Szene konzentriert. Auch die jetzt erschienene dritte Folge bietet wieder einiges zu entdecken. Sehr schön!
Smoove & Turrel sind mit ihrem siebten Album „Red Ellen“ am Start. Die Band um den Produzenten Jonathan Watson aka Smoove und den Sänger John Turrell bleiben auch auf dem neuen Album ihrem Erfolgsrezept treu: Treibende Grooves mit einem kräftigen elektronischen Clubsound-Vibe, die sich zwischen Funk & Soul bewegen und zum Teil auch dezent mit einer Prise Jazz und Gospel versehen sind. Bemerkenswert ist das Gastspiel von Blue Note Legende Ronnie Foster bei „The Light“, dem Eröffungsstück des Albums.
Das neue Album der australischen Band The Bamboos schlägt eine neue Richtung für die ehemals fest in der Funk-Szene verankerten Band ein. Auf „This Is How You Do It“ entwicklen sie ihren Sound in Richtung Boogie und Neo-Soul. Auch Hip-Hop Gast-Vokalisten, wie der schon früheren Alben bekannte Ohmega Watts, sind mit am Start. So wird der Sound etwas erneuert und gleichzeitig vielfältiger.
Zum Schluss gibt es noch eine äußerst interessante Compilation, die Soul, AOR und Disco aus Italien in den Jahren 1977-1986 präsentiert: „Paisa Got Soul“ ist beim italienischen Label Foul Flies erschienen. Viel Spaß beim Anhören!

It’s Soul Time!
A good four and a half years after the terrific album „1634 Lexington Ave.“ there is a new album from Carlton Jumel Smith. This time he has teamed up with the French band The Soul Seeders, the house band of the Lovemedo Records label. Although the album „Pleasure“ is short and crisp with a playing time of around 22 minutes, it is once again a typical Carlton Jumel Smith sound. The man simply has a gifted soul voice. Fabulous! It is not yet known whether the vinyl album will be available in Germany. In any case, it can be ordered via mail order from the label Lovemedo Records.
Tobias Kirmayer has put together another installment of the „Can You Feel It?“ compilation series. The focus here is on modern soul, disco and boogie. The fourth installment once again offers some musical highlights and surprises: Right at the start, we have Matter Of Taste, a band from the small Swabian town of Gemmrigheim, which lies north of Stuttgart on the Neckar river. Tobias has selected „Step By Step“ from their only album „It’s Only A Matter Of Taste“, which was released in 1979. A worthy start to the compilation and a great song!
The makers of the „Golden Rules“ label from Leibzig curate the compilation series „The Originals“, which focuses on current productions from the soul & funk scene. The third installment, which has just been released, once again offers plenty to discover. Very nice!
Smoove & Turrel are back with their seventh album „Red Ellen“. The band led by producer Jonathan Watson aka Smoove and singer John Turrell remain true to their recipe for success on the new album: driving grooves with a strong electronic club sound vibe, which move between funk and soul and are sometimes also subtly infused with a pinch of jazz and gospel. The guest appearance of Blue Note legend Ronnie Foster on „The Light“, the album’s opening track, is remarkable.
