A Soul Celebration!
Das französischen Label Heavenly Sweetness feiert im November seinen 15. Geburtstag mit drei digitalen Compilations. Das Label hat seit seiner Gründung einen umfangreichen Katalog an exzellenten Veröffentlichungen aufgebaut. Im Jahr 2009 haben sie eine Serie mit sehr schönen Vinyl-Veröffentlichungen von Blue Note Klassikern gestartet, in der bis 2016 insgesamt 33 LPs in audiophilen Pressungen wiederveröffentlicht wurden. Ein weiteres Highlight in der frühen Label-Historie waren die Serien mit Ethio Jazz und Ethiopian Urban Modern Music. In den letzten Jahren glänzte das Label vor allem durch aktuelle Produktionen, deren Bandbreite von Jazz über Tropical Sounds bis zu aktuellen Club-Sounds reicht. Dabei sind Künstler wie Guts, Blundetto, Pat Kalla & Le Super Mojo und David Walters. Viele dieser Veröffentlichungen von Heavenly Sweetness habe ich schon hier bei Soul Unlimited vorgestellt. Wir feiern also gerne mit Heavenly Sweetness Geburtstag und ihr könnt drei kleine Mixsets mit folgenden Themenschwerpunkten hören: Jazz, Tropical & Remixes.
Im zweiten Teil der Sendung geht es dann weiter einigen neuen Alben. Den Anfang macht Quantic mit seinem Album „Dancing While Falling“. Bei einem neuen Album von Quantic hätte ich ein Album erwartet, das voller Bezüge zu lateinamerikanischen und afro-karibischen Rhythmen ist. Doch dieses mal beschäftigt sich Quantic mit der Musik, die entstanden ist als die vorgenannten Einflüsse auf amerikanischen Soul getroffen sind und mit ihm eine Fusion eingegangen sind: Disco und Boogie ist also das musikalische Thema seines neuen Albums. Nach mehrmaligem Hören finde ich es auch zunehmend gut. Die hervorragende Sängerin Andreya Triana leistet hierbei einen wesentlichen Beitrag, denn sie singt auf den meisten Songs des Albums. Ich bin mir sicher, dass die Songs auch auf dem Dancefloor gut funktionieren werden.
Danach springen wir von der New Yorker Clubszene des Jahres 2023 nach UK in die 80er Jahre, um uns für den fast vergessenen Underground UK Soul zu begeistern. Die Compilation „Just A Touch“, die von Sam Don für das Label Athens Of The North zusammengestellt hat, ist eine perfekte Einführung in diese musikalische Welt, die ich wärmstens empfehlen möchte. Ein weiterer Aspekt in der Welt des Souls ist der sogenannte Yacht Soul. Ein Sound der auch als Yacht Rock bezeichnet wird. Damit ist ein Mischstil gemeint, der in den späten 1970er Jahren an der amerikanischen Westküste entstandenen und von weißem Soul, Jazz, Funk sowie mehrstimmigen Vokalsätzen geprägt ist. Bekannteste Bands dieser Art sind Steely Dan und die Doobie Brothers. Die Compilation „Yacht Soul – The Coverversions 2“ dreht hier jedoch den Spieß um. Hier sind nicht weiße Künstler vertreten die Soul Songs interpretieren, sondern schwarze Künstler die Soul Coverversionen von weißen Pop-Hits machen und die sind allesamt sehr gut gelungen! Last but not least kommt das Album-Debüt der Band TheEEs. Auf „Temptations Of Sound“ haben Andre Neundorf und Claus Hartisch eine stimmige Sammlung locker groovender Songs versammelt, die quasi den Indian Summer ins Wohnzimmer bringen. A Soul Celebration!
The French label Heavenly Sweetness is celebrating its 15th birthday in November with three digital compilations. Since its foundation, the label has built up an extensive catalog of excellent releases. In 2009, they launched a series of beautiful vinyl releases of Blue Note classics, in which a total of 33 LPs were reissued in audiophile pressings by 2016. Another highlight in the label’s early history was the series with Ethio Jazz and Ethiopian Urban Modern Music. In recent years, the label has shone above all with current productions ranging from jazz and tropical sounds to the latest club sounds. This includes artists such as Guts, Blundetto, Pat Kalla & Le Super Mojo and David Walters. I have already presented many of these Heavenly Sweetness releases here at Soul Unlimited. So we are happy to celebrate Heavenly Sweetness‘ birthday and you can listen to three small mix sets with the following themes: Jazz, Tropical & Remixes.
The second part of the show continues with some new albums. First up is Quantic with his album „Dancing While Falling“. For a new album from Quantic, I would have expected an album full of references to Latin American and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. This time, however, Quantic deals with the music that emerged when the aforementioned influences met American soul and entered into a fusion with it: Disco and boogie is thus the musical theme of his new album. After listening to it several times, I find it increasingly good. The excellent singer Andreya Triana makes a significant contribution here, as she sings on most of the songs on the album. I’m sure the songs will also work well on the dancefloor.
We then jump from the New York club scene of 2023 to the UK in the 80s to get excited about the almost forgotten underground UK soul. The compilation „Just A Touch“, put together by Sam Don for the Athens Of The North label, is a perfect introduction to this musical world and I would highly recommend it. Another aspect of the world of soul is so-called yacht soul. A sound that is also known as yacht rock. This refers to a hybrid style that emerged on the American west coast in the late 1970s and is characterized by white soul, jazz, funk and polyphonic vocals. The best-known bands of this style are Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers. However, the compilation „Yacht Soul – The Coverversions 2“ turns the tables here. It doesn’t feature white artists interpreting soul songs, but black artists doing soul cover versions of white pop hits and they are all very well done! Last but not least comes the album debut of the band TheEEs. On „Temptations Of Sound“, Andre Neundorf and Claus Hartisch have put together a harmonious collection of loosely grooving songs that bring the Indian summer into your living room. Have fun listening!
