A musical trip to Africa
Es ist wieder mal Zeit für einen musikalischen Trip nach Afrika. Die Veröffentlichung des sechsten Box-Sets mit Alben des legendären nigerianischen Musikers Fela Kuti ist dafür ein willkommender Anlass. Er war zusammen mit Tony Allen (dem Drummer seiner Band Africa 70) der Begründer des Afrobeat. Sein musikalisches und gesellschaftspolitisches Vermächtnis ist enorm und nur schwer überschaubar, er hat weit über 50 Alben veröffentlicht. Er verstand seine Musik auch als politische Waffe, welche die Menschen wach rütteln sollte. Dieses Engagement führte auch zur Verfolgung durch die Militärregierung in Nigeria. Abgesehen von diesen Kontroversen war seine Musik auch Inspirationsquelle für viele Musiker aus dem In- und Ausland. Fela Kuti arbeitete mit Ginger Baker und Roy Ayers zusammen und hat sich unter anderem mit James Brown, Sly Stone und Miles Davis getroffen. Auch heute gibt es noch zahlreiche Bands, die von seiner Musik inspiriert sind.
Die 11-köpfige belgische Band Alpacas Collective hat im November ihr neues Album „Big Words“ veröffentlicht. Der Titelsong ist eine Hommage an Fela Kuti. Die Einflüsse der Band gehen jedoch über Afrobeat hinnaus und integrieren auch Funk, psychedelische Sounds und creolischen Rap. Die Sitar gibt dem Sound der Band noch eine ganz besondere Note. Ein sehr interessantes Album!
Die Togo All Stars kommen aus Lomé, die Hauptstadt Togos, in deren Umkreis Städte liegen, aus denen vielfältige musikalische Einflüsse kommen. Accra, das Zentrum der ghanaischen Highlife Musik ist nur 160 km westlich entfernt und auch Cotonou, der Geburtsort des berühmten Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou Dahomey, ist nur 150 km östlich entfernt. Nach weiteren 120km in östlicher Richtung liegt Lagos, wo Fela Kuti mit seinem Afrobeat Pionierarbeit geleistet hat. All diese Einflüsse sind in der Musik der Togo All Stars verarbeitet. Darüber hinaus verfügt Togo ebenfalls über eine interessante Musikszene, deren Voodoo Rhythmen in Kombination mit Afro-Funk ziemlich spannend sind, wie man bei den Togo All Stars sehr gut hören kann.
Mit dem gerade schon erwähnten Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou Dahomey geht es dann weiter. Acid Jazz Records haben in ihrer Reihe mit Reissues aus dem Albarika Store Katalog das Album „Le Sato 2“ wiederveröffentlicht. Ein spannendes Album mit hypnotischem Afro-Funk!
Mit der Black Children Sledge Funk Group kommt eine weitere Band aus Nigeria. Ihr 1976 veröffentlichtes Ablum „Love Is Fair“ wurde vom Label Afrodelic wieder aufgelegt. Die Band spielt eine sonnige Mischung aus Reggae und Afro-Funk, mit viel Percussion, psychedelischer und rhythmischer Gitarre und Orgel. Sehr schön! Zum Schluss kommt dann noch das London Afrobeat Collective mit einem ersten Song aus ihrem nächsten Album, das in 2024 erscheinen wird. Viel Spaß beim Anhören!

A musical trip to Africa
It’s time once again for a musical trip to Africa. The release of the sixth box set of albums by the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti is a welcome occasion. Together with Tony Allen (the drummer of his band Africa 70), he was the founder of Afrobeat. His musical and socio-political legacy is enormous and difficult to comprehend; he released well over 50 albums. He also saw his music as a political weapon to shake people awake. This commitment also led to persecution by the military government in Nigeria. Apart from these controversies, his music was also a source of inspiration for many musicians at home and abroad. Fela Kuti worked with Ginger Baker and Roy Ayers and met with James Brown, Sly Stone and Miles Davis, among others. Even today, there are still numerous bands that are inspired by his music.

The Black Children Sledge Funk Group is another band from Nigeria. Their 1976 album „Love Is Fair“ has been reissued by the Afrodelic label. The band plays a sunny mixture of reggae and Afro-funk, with lots of percussion, psychedelic and rhythmic guitar and organ. Very nice!
