Jazzy grooves & soulful sounds …
Mit einer kleinen Runde 90er Jahre Downtempo Breaks geht es los und die klingen nach all den Jahren immer noch erstaunlich frisch. Danach geht es langsam in Richtung Gegenwart und mit Meshell Ndegeocello’s aktuellen Album „The Omnichord Real Book“ kommen wir zu einem ersten Highlight. Das Album wurde bereits Mitte 2023 veröffentlicht und es daher allerhöchste Zeit es hier vorzustellen. Es ist eine vielfältige und absolut begeisternde Mischung aus Jazz-Funk, Neo-Soul und Avantgarde-Jazz. Wunderbar, wirklich ganz große Klasse!
Danach geht es mit Galathea weiter, einem Projekt hinter dem der DJ und Produzent Massimo Napoli steht. „Sacred Love“ ist bereits das zweite Album von Galathea und es bietet eine Reihe interessanter Momente, mit Einflüssen die von Afrobeat, Jazz, Soul bis hin zu balearischen Sounds reichen.
Ein neues Album von Ed Motta ist ein Ereignis, das ich immer mit großer Spannung erwarte. Sein neues Werk „Behind The Tea Chronicles“ hat meine Erwartungen voll und ganz erfüllt. Auch auf diesem Album ist Ed Mottas Begeisterung für AOR-Sounds im Stile der legendären Steely Dan bei dem ein oder anderen Song nicht zu überhören. Doch es ist kein reines AOR-Album, denn das musikalische Spektrum ist vielfältiger und reicht von Soul, Jazz und Funk bis hin zu brasilianischen Sounds. Die Arrangements klingen dieses mal wunderbar cineastisch. Ich bin begeistert, ein sehr schönes Album!
Leider gibt es schon wieder den Tod einer großartigen Musikerin zu beklagen. Marlena Shaw war eine Ikone und Ausnahme-Künstlerin. Ihre großartigen Songs wie „Woman of the Ghetto“, „Let’s Wade In Water“ und „California Soul“ sind Klassiker, durch die sie immer in unserer Erinnerung bleiben wird. Marlena Shaw starb am 19. Januar im Alter von 81 Jahren. Ihr zu Ehren gibt es einen kleinen Tribute-Mix.
Am Freitag den 26. Januar startet im Tübinger Club Schlachthaus die neue Veranstaltungsreihe „We’ll Jazz You“. Wie der Name schon andeutet, mit dem Fokus auf Dancefloor-Jazz, sowohl mit Live-Musik und DJ-Set. Die Band „Blue Corner Collective“ aus Tübingen wird bei diesem Event live spielen und Emanuela De Luca wird das ganze mit einem passenden DJ-Set begleiten. Zur Einstimmung auf diesen vielversprechenden Abend gibt es in dieser Sendung drei Songs vom Blue Corner Collective zu hören, die sie im Januar 2019 bei einer Live-Radiosession im Rahmen der Sendung PickUp beim Freien Radio Wüste Welle gespielt haben. Eine tolle Band deren Jazz-Grooves definitiv tanzbar sind und daher ich freue mich schon auf den Freitag Abend…
Zum Abschluss möchte ich noch das neue Album der Schweizer Band Journeys vorstellen. Auf „Gate 65“ gibt es locker groovenden Jazz-Funk. Viel Spaß beim Anhören!

Jazzy grooves & soulful sounds …
We start with a little round of 90s downtempo breaks, which still sound amazingly fresh after all these years. Then it slowly moves towards the present and with Meshell Ndegeocello’s latest album „The Omnichord Real Book“ we come to a first highlight. The album was released in mid-2023 and it is therefore high time to present it here. It is a diverse and absolutely inspiring mix of jazz-funk, neo-soul and avant-garde jazz. Wonderful, really great class!
Then it’s on to Galathea, a project behind the DJ and producer Massimo Napoli. „Sacred Love“ is Galathea’s second album and offers a number of interesting moments, with influences ranging from Afrobeat, jazz and soul to Balearic sounds.
A new album from Ed Motta is an event I always eagerly await. His new work „Behind The Tea Chronicles“ has completely fulfilled my expectations. On this album too, Ed Motta’s enthusiasm for AOR sounds in the style of the legendary Steely Dan cannot be ignored on one or two songs. But it is not a pure AOR album, because the musical spectrum is more diverse and ranges from soul, jazz and funk to Brazilian sounds. The arrangements sound wonderfully cinematic this time. I am thrilled, a very nice album!
Unfortunately, we have to mourn the death of another great musician. Marlena Shaw was an icon and exceptional artist. Her great songs such as „Woman of the Ghetto“, „Let’s Wade In Water“ and „California Soul“ are classics for which she will always be remembered. Marlena Shaw died on January 19 at the age of 81. There is a small tribute mix in her honor.
On Friday, January 26, the new event series „We’ll Jazz You“ starts at the Schlachthaus club in Tübingen. As the name suggests, the focus will be on dancefloor jazz, with both live music and a DJ set.
