Different Colors of Soul!
In dieser Sendung geht es um Soul, in allen möglichen Formen. Zum Auftakt gibt es eine Runde mit einigen Soul Klassikern und auch aktuelle Aufnahmen sind dabei. Wir hören unter anderem Dave Lee’s Projekt AC Soul Symphony mit dem großartigen Tune „I Want To See You Dance“ und Cotonete aus Paris mit der Single „What Did You Run For“, bei der die Vocals von UK-Soul Legende Omar sind. Die russische Cinematic Funk Kombo The Diasonics hat eine explosive Version des Soul-Klassikers „Beggin'“ von den Four Seasons aufgenommen, die von Henry Jenkins (Surprise Chef) produziert wurde und am 8. März beim italienischen Label Record Kicks als 7″ Single erscheinen wird.
Dann kommen wir zum Album der Woche: „It’s Soul That Counts“ von den Principles Of Joy! Das dritte Album der Band ist wirklich großartig geworden. Die Band hat einen riesigen Entwicklungsschritt gemacht und reflektiert das ganze Spektrum der Soul Musik. Von der Midtempo 70er Soul Ballade, über Northern Soul Anklänge und Modern Soul Grooves bis hin zu Blaxploitation Sounds und Jazz-Funk ist hier ein breites musikalisches Spektrum zu hören. Die Arrangements sind aufwendiger und ausgefeilter als bisher. Bläsersätze, Streicher und Background Chöre verleihen den Songs Kraft und Wärme. Für die hervorragenden Arrangements zeichnet sich Ludovic Bors verantwortlich, der Keyboarder der Band. Zusammen mit seiner Frau Christelle Amoussou schreibt er zudem fast alle Songs der Band. Die Band ist über die Jahre bestens eingespielt und hat mit Rachel Yarabou eine starke Sängerin. Das zeigt sich unter anderem auch bei der einzigen Cover-Version auf dem Album, dem Song „Your Thing Is A Drag“ von der großen und unvergessenen Sharon Jones, den sie hier mit Bravour interpretiert. Zu den besten Songs des Albums zählen „Girls Be Like“ und das epische „No Justice, No peace (Pt. 1&2)“. Die Principles Of Joy sind inzwischen zu einer wichtigen Instanz in der europäischen Soul Szene geworden und das neue Album „It’s Soul That Counts“ unterstreicht dies eindrucksvoll. Ganz große Klasse!
Danach geht mit neuen Single Veröffentlichungen weiter. Da sind The Tibbs dabei, die „Last Train aus ihrem aktuellen Album ausgekoppelt haben. Pratt & Moody kündigen eine neue Single auf Timmion an, die wieder mit Cold Diamond & Mink aufgenommen wurde: „Creeping Around“ ist wieder Deep Soul vom Allerfeinsten und die Single wird Anfang April erscheinen. Bereits Mitte Februar ist die vierte Folge der Compilation Reihe „This Is DJs Choice“ erscheinen, die dieses Mal von GU zusammengestellt wurde. Er präsentiert eine schöne Auswahl aus Funk, Soul, Latin und HipHop. Es sind hauptsächlich Songs aus den letzten 20 Jahren mit denen GU Erinnerungen verbindet. Sehr schön.
Kidding sind eine Band aus dem Umfeld des Komet Kollektivs und habe soeben ihre zweite Single „Seriously“ veröffentlicht. Hammond-Organ Funk mit einem ansteckenden, zwingenden Groove. Ziemlich spannend. Da passen auch die New Mastersounds mit ihrer neuen Single „Do The Sausage Roll“ ganz gut dazu. Der Groove geht aber eher in Richtung Souljazz, mit wie immer tollem Gitarrenspiel von Bandleader Eddie Roberts. Da fühlt man sich an Größen wie Melvin Sparks oder Grant Green erinnert!
Last but not least kommen wir zu der Band People aus Aschaffenburg. Tramp Records haben eine Compilation mit Songs aus den beiden 1981 bei Ohrwurm erschienen Alben veröffentlicht. Da gibt es Songs die in Richtung AOR-Sound / Yacht-Soul gehen und die auch einen starken Einfluss von Crosby, Stills, Nash und Young haben. Ich finde das hört sich sehr schön und vor allem entspannt an. In diesem Sinn: Viel Spaß beim Anhören!

Different Colors of Soul!
This show is all about soul, in all its forms. To kick things off, there’s a round of some soul classics and current recordings are also included. Among others, we hear Dave Lee’s project AC Soul Symphony with the great tune „I Want To See You Dance“ and Cotonete from Paris with the single „What Did You Run For“, which features vocals by UK soul legend Omar. The Russian cinematic funk combo The Diasonics have recorded an explosive version of the soul classic „Beggin'“ by the Four Seasons, which was produced by Henry Jenkins (Surprise Chef) and will be released as a 7″ single on the Italian label Record Kicks on March 8.
Then we come to the album of the week: „It’s Soul That Counts“ by Principles Of Joy! The band’s third album has turned out really great. The band has taken a huge step forward and reflects the whole spectrum of soul music. From mid-tempo 70s soul ballads to northern soul echoes and modern soul grooves to blaxploitation sounds and jazz-funk, a broad musical spectrum can be heard here. The arrangements are more elaborate and sophisticated than before. Horn sections, strings and background choirs lend the songs power and warmth. Ludovic Bors, the band’s keyboardist, is responsible for the outstanding arrangements. Together with his wife Christelle Amoussou, he also writes almost all of the band’s songs. The band is well-rehearsed over the years and has a strong singer in Rachel Yarabou. This is also evident in the only cover version on the album, the song „Your Thing Is A Drag“ by the great and unforgotten Sharon Jones, which she interprets here with bravura. The best songs on the album include „Girls Be Like“ and the epic „No Justice, No Peace (Pt. 1&2)“. The Principles Of Joy have now become an important authority in the European soul scene and the new album „It’s Soul That Counts“ underlines this impressively. Great class!
Then it’s on to new single releases. These include The Tibbs, who have released „Last Train“ from their latest album. Pratt & Moody announce a new single on Timmion, which was again recorded with Cold Diamond & Mink: „Creeping Around“ is again deep soul at its best and the single will be released at the beginning of April. The fourth installment of the compilation series „This Is DJs Choice“, this time compiled by GU, was released in mid-February. It presents a nice selection of funk, soul, Latin and hip hop. These are mainly songs from the last 20 years with which GU associates memories. Very nice.
Kidding are a band from the Komet Kollektiv and have just released their second single „Seriously“. Hammond organ funk with an infectious, compelling groove. Quite exciting. The New Mastersounds with their new single „Do The Sausage Roll“ also fit in quite well. However, the groove is more in the direction of soul jazz, with, as always, great guitar playing from band leader Eddie Roberts. You’re reminded of greats like Melvin Sparks or Grant Green!
Last but not least, we come to the band People from Aschaffenburg. Tramp Records have released a compilation with songs from the two albums released by Ohrwurm in 1981. There are songs that go in the direction of AOR sound / yacht soul and also have a strong influence from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. I think it sounds very nice and, above all, relaxed.
