In der ersten Stunde gibt es eine Runde Soul 45s mit einigen Klassikern. Danach steht die Compilation „Eccentric Soul: The Tragar & Note Labels“ im Mittelpunkt, die einen profunden Überblick über die Veröffentlichungen der Labels Tragar und Note Records aus Atlanta gibt. Die Labels wurden Ende der 60er bzw in den frühen 70er Jahren von Jesse Jones gegründet. Er hatte auf seinen Labels zahlreiche, inzwischen sehr gesuchte Soul-Perlen veröffentlicht, die nun mit dieser Compilation wieder auf Vinyl erhältlich sind. Eine fabelhafte Compilation, die in der hervorragenden und sehr empfehlenswerten Reihe „Eccentric Soul“ bei Numero Group erschienen ist.
Anschließend geht es mit aktuellen Soul Veröffentlichungen weiter. Hier möchte ich insbesondere das famose spanische Label Soul 4 Real hervorheben, das regelmäßig schöne Deep Soul Aufnahmen aus den 60er und 70er Jahren veröffentlicht. Die waren zum Teil noch unveröffentlicht bzw. erscheinen erstmalig auf 7″ Vinyl-Single. Die aktuelle Veröffentlichung ist „Take This Love Of Mine“, ein Song von den Staples, der 1976 von Curtis Mayfield produziert wurde und bislang nur als LP-track auf dem Album „Pass It On“ veröffentlicht wurde.
Ein weiteres Highlight für Soul-Fans ist der bislang unveröffentlichte Song „Love That One“ von Harvey Scales & The Seven Sounds, der nun vom Label Epsilon Records als 7″ Single veröffentlicht wurde.
Michelle David ist eine amerikanische Gospel & Soul Sängerin, die seit einigen Jahren in den Niederlanden lebt und arbeitet und nun mit ihrer Band The Tru-Tones ein neues Album veröffentlicht hat. „Brothers & Sisters“ ist ein solides und rundum gelungenes Soul-Album, das seine Inspiration aus dem Soul der späten 60er Jahre zieht. Die Band schafft es dies in die aktuelle Zeit zu transferieren ohne dabei allzu sehr retro zu klingen.
Danach geht es weg vom puren Soul Sound hin zu mehr experimentellen und dennoch soul-affinen Klängen. Khruangbin sind ja in den letzten Jahren schon hinlänglich bekannt geworden. Ihr Sound, der Dub, psychedelischen Soul und fernöstliche Vibes fusioniert, klingt großartig und hat schnell viele Fans gefunden. Es kommt sehr selten vor, dass Künstler die hier vorgestellt werden so erfolgreich sind, dass ein neues Album in der ersten Woche auf Platz 2 der deutschen Album-Charts einsteigt. Mit ihrem neuen Album „A La Sala“ ist dies Khrangbin gelungen. Musikalisch haben sie beim neuen Album keine Experimente gemacht und einfach ihr bewährtes Konzept noch weiter verfeinert. Das Ergebnis, finde ich, klingt nach wie vor sehr spannend!
Bei Kolonel Djafaar, einer Band aus Antwerpen, geht es nicht ganz so entspannt zu. Hier treffen Afrobeat, Ethio-Jazz und psychedelische Rocksounds zusammen und es entsteht eine hochinteressante musikalische Melange. Mal klingt es auch etwas cinematisch, doch die Songs sind immer sehr lebhaft und pulsierend. Das zweite Album der Band, „Getaway“ ist beim Label Batov Records erschienen und passt hervorragend zu dem Repertoire des Labels.

The first hour features a round of Soul 45s with some classics. This is followed by the compilation „Eccentric Soul: The Tragar & Note Labels“, which provides a profound overview of the releases of the Atlanta labels Tragar and Note Records. The labels were founded by Jesse Jones in the late 60s and early 70s respectively. He released numerous soul gems on his labels, which have since become highly sought-after and are now available on vinyl again with this compilation. A fabulous compilation, released by Numero Group in the excellent and highly recommended „Eccentric Soul“ series.
We then continue with current soul releases. Here I would particularly like to highlight the famous Spanish label Soul 4 Real, which regularly releases beautiful deep soul recordings from the 60s and 70s. Some of these were previously unreleased or are appearing on 7″ vinyl singles for the first time. The current release is „Take This Love Of Mine“, a song by the Staples, which was produced by Curtis Mayfield in 1976 and was previously only released as an LP track on the album „Pass It On“.
Another highlight for soul fans is the previously unreleased song „Love That One“ by Harvey Scales & The Seven Sounds, which has now been released as a 7″ single by the label Epsilon Records.
Michelle David is an American gospel & soul singer who has been living and working in the Netherlands for several years and has now released a new album with her band The Tru-Tones. „Brothers & Sisters“ is a solid and all-round successful soul album that draws its inspiration from the soul of the late 60s. The band manages to transfer this into the present day without sounding too retro.
After that, they move away from the pure soul sound towards more experimental yet soulful sounds. Khruangbin have already become well known in recent years. Their sound, which fuses dub, psychedelic soul and Far Eastern vibes, sounds great and has quickly found many fans. It is very rare for artists featured here to be so successful that a new album enters the German album charts at number 2 in the first week. Khrangbin have achieved this with their new album „A La Sala“. Musically, they didn’t experiment with the new album and simply refined their tried and tested concept even further. I think the result still sounds very exciting!
Kolonel Djafaar, a band from Antwerp, is not quite as relaxed. Afrobeat, ethio-jazz and psychedelic rock sounds come together here to create a highly interesting musical melange. Sometimes it sounds a little cinematic, but the songs are always very lively and pulsating. The band’s second album, „Getaway“, has been released on the Batov Records label and fits in perfectly with the label’s repertoire. Have fun listening to it!
