Library Music & Cinematic Sounds
Die Soundästhetik von Filmmusik hat eine ganz besondere Faszination und Magie. Daher ist sie auch oft Inspirationsquelle für Musiker, die eigentlich gar keine Filmmusik, im Sinne von Musik für einen Film, erschaffen. Die Auswahl der neuen Alben, die in dieser Folge der Soul Unlimited Radioshow zu hören sind, kommen aus beiden Bereichen. Sowohl Filmmusik im engeren Sinne als auch von Filmmusik oder auch Library Music inspirierte Werke.
Das erste Album-Feature ist das Debüt des französischen Duos Bolbec. Die beiden Musiker und Produzenten Axel Concato und Barth Corbelet kennen sich seit ihren Kindheitstagen in Rouen. Auf ihrem ersten eigenen Album „Victime De L’Aube“ präsentieren Bolbec eine eklektische Mischung cinematischer Sounds, die von Jazz, Folk, Electronica bis hin zu Klassik inspiriert sind. Ein wunderbares Album auf dem es einige Perlen zu entdecken gibt.
Das Album der Woche ist „Musique Originale De Films Volume 2“, eine Compilation mit bisher unveröffentlichten Songs von Ahmed Malek. Er ist ein algerischer Musiker und Filmmusik-Komponist, der oft mit Ennio Morricone verglichen wird. Die Macher des Labels Habibi Funk haben die Musik von Ahmed Malek über Youtube entdeckt und die anschließende Recherche nach ihm und seiner Musik führte zu einer ersten Veröffentlichung mit Werken von Ahmed Malik, die 2016 bei Habibi Funk erschienen ist. Im Rahmen dieser Recherche konnte das Team von Habibi Funk Verbindung mit seiner Familie in Algerien aufnehmen. Ahmed Malek’s Tochter Henia übergab ihnen eine Kiste voller Masterbänder, die ihr Vater zu Hause aufbewahrt hatte. Diese Sammlung bildete schließlich die Grundlage für die aktuelle zweite Veröffentlichung mit Songs von Ahmed Malek, Songs die überwiegend in den 70er und frühen 80er Jahren entstanden sind. Es ist ein wunderbares Album geworden und ich bin von der Leichtigkeit fasziniert, mit der die Musik zwischen thematischem Jazz, Funk und algerischer Folklore mit melancholischem Unterton wechselt. Diese Musik berührt und entfaltet eine ganz besondere Magie!
Auf der Suche nach dem perfekten Loop entstand bei Opek der Wunsch solch unverwechselbare Melodien und die damit verbundene Magie selbst zu erschaffen. Mit seinem aktuellen Album „The Call“ hat er dies auf vortreffliche Weise umgesetzt. Ein absolut empfehlenswertes Album!
Das Ghost Funk Orchestra startete als Ein-Mann-Aufnahmeprojekt, das der Komponist und Multi-Instrumentalist Seth Applebaum gegründet hatte. Zwischenzeitlich ist es zu einer echten Live-band ausgewachsen und mit „A Trip To The Moon“ ist vor kurzem bereits das vierte Album der Band erschienen, zwei rein digital erschienene Alben nicht mitgerechnet. Mit dem neuen Album taucht das Ghost Funk Orchestra noch tiefer in die Welt der Filmmusik, der Exotic und des Surf-Rocks ein. Das Resultat ist ein vielschichtiges, collagenartiges Hörerlebnis, bei dem es viel zu entdecken gibt. Zum Titel des Albums passt auch, dass die einzelnen Songs durch Sprach-Samples der Apollo Mond-Missionen miteinander verbunden sind. Definitiv ein sehr interessantes Album!
Die Musik die Misha Panfilov macht, finde ich immer wieder sehr spannend und abwechslungsreich. Als 2018 die Compilation „Astral Schlagers“ mit Singles von der Misha Panfilov Sound Combo erschienen ist, war sie zu meinem Leidwesen bereits nach kurzer Zeit ausverkauft. Um so mehr habe ich mich nun über die Neuauflage dieses schönen Albums gefreut. In den Jahren 2014 bis 2018 sind vierzehn Songs entstanden, die einen leicht kosmischen Vibe haben. Die Musik ist voll cooler Moog- und Theremin-Sounds, während das Ganze eine Art heftig groovender Space-Funk ist. Der Album-Titel könnte also nicht passender sein!
Grant Phabao vom ParisDJs Kollektiv hat sich bislang vor allem durch Produktionen einen Namen gemacht, die im Spannungsfeld von Reggae, Afrobeat, Funk und HipHop angesiedelt sind. Nun hat er ein neues Album veröffentlicht, bei dem auch Frank Biyong, RacecaR und Sake Smith mit von der Partie waren. „Magic Kingdom“ ist ein grandioses Library-Funk Album, das ich euch wärmstens empfehlen möchte!

Library Music & Cinematic Sounds
The sonic aesthetics of film music have a special fascination and magic. That’s why it’s often a source of inspiration for musicians who don’t actually create film music. The selection of new albums that can be heard in this episode of the Soul Unlimited radio show come from both areas. Both film music in the narrower sense and works inspired by film music or library music.
The first album is the debut of the French duo Bolbec. The two musicians and producers Axel Concato and Barth Corbelet have known each other since their childhood days in Rouen. On their first album „Victime De L’Aube“, Bolbec present an eclectic mix of cinematic sounds inspired by jazz, folk, electronica and classical music. A wonderful album with a few gems to discover.
The album of the week is „Musique Originale De Films Volume 2“, a compilation of previously unreleased songs by Ahmed Malek. He is an Algerian musician and film music composer who is often compared to Ennio Morricone. The creators of the Habibi Funk label discovered Ahmed Malek’s music through YouTube, and subsequent research into him and his music led to the first release of works by Ahmed Malik, which was released by Habibi Funk in 2016. As part of this research, the Habibi Funk team was able to get in touch with his family in Algeria. Ahmed Malek’s daughter Henia gave them a box of master tapes that her father had kept at home. This collection eventually formed the basis for the current second release of songs by Ahmed Malek, mostly written in the 70s and early 80s. It has become a wonderful album and I am fascinated by the ease with which the music alternates between thematic jazz, funk and Algerian folklore with a melancholic undertone. This music touches and unfolds a very special magic!
In his search for the perfect loop, Opek developed the desire to create his own distinctive melodies and the magic that goes with them. With his current album „The Call“ he has achieved this in an excellent way. A highly recommended album!
The Ghost Funk Orchestra began as a one-man recording project founded by composer and multi-instrumentalist Seth Applebaum. It has since grown into a full-fledged live band, and „A Trip To The Moon“ is the band’s fourth album, not counting two digital-only releases. The new album takes the Ghost Funk Orchestra even deeper into the world of film music, exotica and surf rock. The result is a multi-layered, collage-like listening experience with a lot to discover. The fact that the individual songs are linked by voice samples from the Apollo moon missions also fits in with the album’s title. Definitely an interesting album!
I always find the music that Misha Panfilov makes very exciting and varied. When the compilation „Astral Schlagers“ with singles by the Misha Panfilov Sound Combo was released in 2018, it was sold out after a short time, much to my chagrin. So I was all the more pleased to see the new edition of this beautiful album. Fourteen songs were created between 2014 and 2018 that have a slightly cosmic vibe. The music is full of cool moog and theremin sounds, while the whole thing is a kind of heavy grooving space funk. The album title couldn’t be more fitting!
Grant Phabao from the ParisDJs collective has made a name for himself with productions that are somewhere between Reggae, Afrobeat, Funk and Hip Hop. He has now released a new album featuring Frank Biyong, RacecaR and Sake Smith. „Magic Kingdom“ is a great library funk album that I highly recommend!
