In der ersten rund 70 Minuten würdigen wir das musikalische Erbe von drei Künster*Innen, die Anfang September gestorben sind.
Das Image von Caterina Valente ist in Deutschland vor allem durch ihre Schlager-Hits geprägt worden, doch dies wird ihrem großen Talent in keiner Weise gerecht. Caterina Valente hat mit einigen berühmten Jazz-Orchestern aufgenommen und sie hatte auch eine große Leidenschaft für brasilianische Musik. Sie ist am 9. September im Alter von 93 Jahren gestorben. Für den Tribute-Mix habe ich einige schöne Jazz-Stücke ausgewählt, sowie ein paar Songs, die auch die exotische Seite ihrer Musik wiederspiegeln.
Die Soul-Sängerin Pat Lewis ist vor allem in der Northern Soul Szene bekannt geworden. Einige ihrer Songs wurden zu gesuchten Szene-Klassikern. In den 70er Jahren hat sie auch als Background-Sängerin für Isaac Hayes gearbeitet. Pat Lewis ist am 2. September im Alter von 77 Jahren gestorben. Im Tribute-Mix sind zwei ihrer größten Northern-Soul Klassiker zu hören, sowie eine Aufnahme aus den 60er Jahren die erst ca. 2011 erstmalig veröffentlicht wurde.
Auch Frankie Beverly’s erste Aufnahmen aus den 60er Jahren mit seiner Band The Butlers haben in der Northern Soul Szene für große Furore gesorgt. Später hat er die Band zu einer Funk-Band erweitert und in Raw Soul umbenannt. Nachdem Marvin Gaye die Band entdeckt und sie zu seiner Backing-Band gemacht hatte, haben sie sich in Maze umbenannt. Daraufhin bekamen sie auch einen Major-Plattenvertrag und der Karriere von Maze featuring Franky Beverly stand nichts mehr im Weg. Die Band und Frankie Beverly sind inzwischen legendär. Frankie Beverly ist am 10. September im Alter von 77 Jahren gestorben. Im Tribute-Mix ist sein größter Northern Soul Hit mit den Butlers zu hören, Aufnahmen von Raw Soul und natürlich Maze.
Danach geht es mit aktuellen Aufnahmen weiter. Das erste Highlight ist das neue, vierte Album von Allysha Joy. Mit dem rauen Charme ihrer souligen Stimme ist sie eindeutig im klassischen Soul verwurzelt, ohne jedoch die alten Legenden in irgend einer Form zu imitieren. Ihre Musik, die auch von ihrem Fender Rhodes Spiel geprägt ist, verortet sich eindeutig in der musikalischen Gegenwart. „The Makings Of Silk“ ist auch ein Album über die Liebe, die wie die Seide wunderschön, romantisch und zerbrechlich ist. Ein außerordentlich schönes und sehr gutes Album!
Nach 27 Jahren gibt es ein neues Album von Galliano, die mit „Halfway Somewhere“ ihr Comeback feiern. Der Sound schließt an die Vergangenheit an, ist aber gereift und erneuert worden. Im Gegensatz zu früher, wo der Sound von Samples dominiert war, sind diese nun in den Hintergrund getreten und die Musik wurde nun überwiegend live eingespielt. Sehr schön!
Der in Italien geborene, aber in Dänemark lebende, Multi-Instrumentalist, Komponist und Produzent Alex Puddu ist nach rund 16 Alben quasi ein Urgestein der italienischen Musikszene. Mit seinem neuen Album „Deliria“ kehrt er zu seinen Wurzeln zurück und hat ein Album in italienischer Sprache gemacht. Disco und italienische Grooves der späten 70er und frühen 80er Jahre, plus ein wenig Pop und Electronica, ergeben eine stimmige Mischung, die sehr gefällig ist.

Jazzy and Soulful Sounds from the past and present.
In the first 70 minutes or so, we pay tribute to the musical legacy of three artists who died at the beginning of September.
Caterina Valente’s image in Germany has mainly been shaped by her pop hits, but this in no way does justice to her great talent. Caterina Valente recorded with several famous jazz orchestras and she also had a great passion for Brazilian music. She died on September 9 at the age of 93. For the tribute mix, I have selected some beautiful jazz pieces, as well as a few songs that reflect her exotic side.
The soul singer Pat Lewis became particularly well known in the Northern Soul scene. Some of her songs have become sought-after scene classics. In the 70s she also worked as a background singer for Isaac Hayes. Pat Lewis died on September 2 at the age of 77. The tribute mix features two of her greatest Northern Soul classics, as well as a recording from the 60s that was only released for the first time around 2011.
Frankie Beverly’s first recordings from the 60s with his band The Butlers also caused a sensation in the Northern Soul scene. He later expanded the band into a funk band and renamed it Raw Soul. After Marvin Gaye discovered the band and made them his backing band, they changed their name to Maze. As a result, they got a major record deal and nothing stood in the way of Maze featuring Franky Beverly’s career. The band and Frankie Beverly are now legendary. Frankie Beverly died on September 10 at the age of 77. The tribute mix features his biggest Northern Soul hit with the Butlers, recordings of Raw Soul and, of course, Maze.
The album then continues with current recordings. The first highlight is the new, fourth album by Allysha Joy. With the raw charm of her soulful voice, she is clearly rooted in classic soul, but without imitating the old legends in any way. Her music, which is also characterized by her Fender Rhodes playing, is clearly located in the musical present. “The Makings Of Silk” is also an album about love, which, like silk, is beautiful, romantic and fragile. An extraordinarily beautiful and very good album!
After 27 years, there is a new album from Galliano, who are celebrating their comeback with “Halfway Somewhere”. The sound follows on from the past, but has matured and been renewed. In contrast to the past, where the sound was dominated by samples, these have now taken a back seat and the music has been recorded mainly live. Very nice!
Born in Italy but living in Denmark, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Alex Puddu is a veteran of the Italian music scene after around 16 albums. With his new album “Deliria”, he returns to his roots and has made an album in Italian. Disco and Italian grooves from the late 70s and early 80s, plus a little pop and electronica, result in a harmonious mix that is very pleasing.
