Inspiration Afrika.
In dieser Episode von Soul Unlimited steht sowohl Musik aus Afrika im Fokus, als auch von afrikanischen Rhytmen inspirierte Musik.
Eins der ersten Highlights ist die Wiederveröffentlichung des Debüt-Albums der Band The Mighty Cavaliers aus Kenia. Auf dem Album „Fisherman“, das ursprünglich 1976 veröffentlicht wurde, gibt es Afro-Funk vom Feinsten zu hören.
Das Album der Woche kommt von Kweku Of Ghana bzw. K.O.G., der mit „Don’t Take My Soul“ sein drittes Album für das von Guts betriebene Label Pura Vida Sounds veröffentlicht hat. Das Album wurde sowohl in Ghana, als auch in Großbritannien aufgenommen und von Guts produziert. K.O.G. bezeichnet es als sein persönlichstes Album, das sein kulturübergreifendes Leben zwischen Großbritannien und Ghana wiederspiegelt. Seine Wurzeln sind einerseits Highlife, die synkopische Verschmelzung lokaler ghanaischer Musik und Jazz, sowie afro-amerikanischer Soul. Dies ergibt, in Verbindung mit anderen Elementen wie Reggae und Hip-Hop oder auch Disco und House-Anklängen, einen stimmigen musikalischen Mix, der absolut Laune macht. Definitiv ein hervorragendes Album, das ich ausdrücklich empfehlen möchte.
Kürzlich bin ich auf das Album „Dedikasjon Til Inspirasjon“ der norwegischen Flammer Dance Band gestoßen und war schnell von den zwingenden Grooves der Band begeistert. Die Band kombiniert organische, perkussive 70er-Jahre-Rhythmen mit schweißtreibendem Psych-Funk und hypnotischen, kosmischen Schwingungen. Das Ergebnis ist ein postrhythmischer, nigelnagelneuer Afrobeat-Sound für die Zukunft. Großartig! Da das Album bereits in 2023 erschienen ist, darf man sich in Kürze auf neue Musik von dieser Band freuen. Stay tuned.
Shay Hazan ist ein Bassist, Bandleader, Komponist und Produzent aus Tel Aviv. Auf seinem zweiten Soloalbum „Wusul“ verbindet er gekonnt die bezaubernden Klänge der Gnawa-Musik, spirituellen Jazz, Hip-Hop-Grooves und elektronische Produktionen mit einer reichen Mischung aus nahöstlichen und afrikanischen Einflüssen. Ein sehr vielseitiges und hochinteressantes Album, das mich absolut überzeugt und begeistert hat!
Zum Schluß gibt es ein weiteres Highlight, das sich mit jedem weiteren Hören mehr und mehr in seiner vollen Schönheit erschließt. Die Rede ist von Àbáse und dem Album „Awakening“. Hinter Àbáse steht der ungarischen Produzent und Keyboarder Szabolcs Bognár. Heute lebt er in Berlin und ist zu einem Protagonisten der rasch wachsenden Jazzbewegung in der Hauptstadt geworden. Das Album vereint Àbáses vielfältige musikalische Einflüsse und Bezugspunkte, die von Jazz über klassischen Lagos-Afrobeat, Yoruba-Rhythmen bis hin zu ungarischer Folklore und auch elektronischen Genres wie House, Techno und Hip-Hop reichen. Inspiration Africa.
This episode of Soul Unlimited focuses on music from Africa as well as music inspired by African rhythms.
One of the first highlights is the re-release of the debut album by the band The Mighty Cavaliers from Kenya. The album “Fisherman”, which was originally released in 1976, features Afro-funk at its finest.
The album of the week comes from Kweku Of Ghana or K.O.G., who has released “Don’t Take My Soul”, his third album for the Pura Vida Sounds label run by Guts. The album was recorded in both Ghana and the UK and produced by Guts. K.O.G. describes it as his most personal album, reflecting his cross-cultural life between the UK and Ghana. His roots are in highlife, the syncopated fusion of local Ghanaian music and jazz, as well as African-American soul. This, in combination with other elements such as reggae and hip-hop or even disco and house echoes, results in a harmonious musical mix that is absolutely fun to listen to. Definitely an excellent album that I would highly recommend.
I recently came across the album “Dedikasjon Til Inspirasjon” by the Norwegian Flammer Dance Band and was quickly impressed by the band’s compelling grooves. The band combines organic, percussive 70s rhythms with sweat-inducing psych-funk and hypnotic, cosmic vibrations. The result is a post-rhythmic, brand new Afrobeat sound for the future. Great! As the album has already been released in 2023, you can look forward to new music from this band in the near future. Stay tuned.
Shay Hazan is a bassist, bandleader, composer and producer from Tel Aviv. On his second solo album “Wusul”, he skillfully combines the enchanting sounds of Gnawa music, spiritual jazz, hip-hop grooves and electronic productions with a rich blend of Middle Eastern and African influences. A very versatile and highly interesting album that absolutely convinced and thrilled me!
Finally, there is another highlight that reveals its full beauty more and more with every listen. We are talking about Àbáse and the album “Awakening”. Behind Àbáse is the Hungarian producer and keyboardist Szabolcs Bognár. He now lives in Berlin and has become a protagonist of the rapidly growing jazz movement in the capital. The album combines Àbáse’s diverse musical influences and points of reference, ranging from jazz to classic Lagos Afrobeat, Yoruba rhythms and Hungarian folklore, as well as electronic genres such as house, techno and hip-hop.
