Diese Ausgabe von Soul Unlimited startet mit einer Runde Soul. Den Auftakt machen Carla Thomas und die Rance Allen Group. Beides sind Aufnahmen aus den Archiven von Stax-Records, die nun erstmals vom spanischen Label Soul 4 Real auf 7″ Vinyl veröffentlicht wurden. Dann geht es weiter mit aktuellem Soul und wir hören die französische Band The Soul Seeders, die sich bei „A Brighter Shade“ wieder mit Carlton Jumel Smith zusammen getan haben. Auch Thee Sacred Souls sind mit einem Song von ihrem im Oktober erscheinenden zweiten Album „Got A Story To Tell“ dabei und die Menahan Street Band bringen dann mit „Tropical Man“ die ersten brasilianischen Vibes. Ein Song, den sie zusammen mit dem Sänger Roge eingespielt haben.
Erstes Schwerpunkt-Thema ist ein Tribute-Feature über den brasilianischen Pianisten Osmar Milito. Hierzulande war er nicht sehr bekannt, doch in Brasilieen war er ein gefragter und hochgeschätzter Jazz und Bossa Nova Pianist. Er hat sowohl mit brasilianischen Größen wie Gilberto Gil, Elis Regina und Vinicius de Marais zusammen gespielt, als auch mit internationalen Künstlern wie Sarah Vauhan, Sammy Davis Jr und Tony Bennett. Am 23. September ist er im Alter von 83 Jahren gestorben.
Das Trio Mocoto war vor allem als Begleitband von Jorge Ben bekannt geworden. Auf ihrem ersten eigenen Album hatten sie gleich mit dem Song „Nao Adianta“ großen Erfolg. Das Album ist seither unter Sammlern brasilianischer Musik gesucht und wurde vor einiger Zeit von Mr. Bongo Records neu aufgelegt.
Als in den späten 70er und frühen 80er Jahren in der afro-amerikanischen Musik Funk, Disco und Boogie immer einflussreicher wurden, ist dieser Trend auch in die brasilianische Musik eingeflossen. Die brasilianischen Musiker kombinierten diese Einflüsse mit ihren eigenen musikalischen Traditionen und so entstand ein einzigartiger neuer Sound. Diese Epoche haben die Macher des Portugisischen Labels Mad About Records auf ihrer Compilation-Reihe „Disco E Cultura“ perfekt eingefangen. Die vor kurzem erschienene zweite Folge sollte man nicht verpassen, denn sie ist wieder absolut großartig geworden!
Zurück aus der Vergangenheit bietet uns die musikalische Gegenwart auch spannende und hochinteressante Veröffentlichungen. Das Ezra Collective aus London hat schon für einige Furore gesorgt und 2023 den Mercury Prize für ihr letztes Album gewonnen. Nun sind sie mit ihrem neuen Album „Dance, No One’s Watching“ am Start. Das Album hat den Akt des Tanzens zum Thema. Wer gerne tanzt kennt die Freude und Euphorie, die eine durchtanzte Nacht schafft. Die Songs für das Album sind auf den ausgedehnten Touren des letzten Jahres entstanden und dokumentieren die Inspirationen der unterschiedlichen Tanzböden, die sie unterwegs entdeckt haben. Das Ezra Collective hat wieder ein wunderbares und sehr abwechslungsreiches Album geschaffen, das man sich unbedingt anhören sollte.
Rio 18 haben auf ihrem neuen Album „Radio Chevere“ ihren Sound von den bisher vor allem brasilianisch beeinflussten Grooves mehr in Richtung anderer lateinamerikanischer Einflüsse erweitert. Zudem ist das Album wie eine Radioshow angelegt und Gast-DJ Coco Maria führt die Hörer auf eine Reise durch unzählige Musikstile und Geschichten. Mit Zwischenstopps in Uruguay, Brasilien, Venezuela, Kolumbien, Mexiko, Kalifornien, New York und unzähligen anderen klanglichen Destinationen über Samba, Salsa, Funk, Cumbia, Joropo, Disco, Psychedelic und Elektronik ist „Radio Chévere“ auch eine musikalische Metapher für Migration – eine Reise von einem Kontinent, von einem Leben zum anderen. Großartig, das Album der Woche!
Zum Abschluß gibt es noch das Debütalbum des New Regency Orchestras, einer 18-köpfigen Latin-Jazz Bigband aus London. Sie sind vom musikalischen Schmelztiegel des New Yorks der 50er jahre fasziniert, wo afro-kubaische Musik auf amerikanische Musik-Tradionen traf. Auf ihrem Debütalbum interpretieren sie Klassiker aus den 50er bis in die 70er Jahre neu und sie spielen diese Songs mit frischem Feuer. Viel Spass beim Anhören!

This edition of Soul Unlimited starts with a round of soul. Carla Thomas and the Rance Allen Group kick things off. Both are recordings from the Stax Records archives, which have now been released on 7″ vinyl for the first time by Spanish label Soul 4 Real. Then it’s on to current soul and we hear the French band The Soul Seeders, who have teamed up with Carlton Jumel Smith again on “A Brighter Shade”. Thee Sacred Souls are also there with a song from their second album “Got A Story To Tell”, which will be released in October, and the Menahan Street Band then bring the first Brazilian vibes with “Tropical Man”. A song that they recorded together with singer Roge.
The first main theme is a tribute feature about the Brazilian pianist Osmar Milito. He was not very well known in this country, but in Brazil he was a sought-after and highly esteemed jazz and bossa nova pianist. He played with Brazilian greats such as Gilberto Gil, Elis Regina and Vinicius de Marais, as well as with international artists such as Sarah Vauhan, Sammy Davis Jr and Tony Bennett. He died on September 23 at the age of 83.
The Mocoto trio was best known as Jorge Ben’s backing band. They had great success with the song “Nao Adianta” on their first album. The album has been sought after by collectors of Brazilian music ever since and was reissued some time ago by Mr. Bongo Records.
When funk, disco and boogie became increasingly influential in Afro-American music in the late 70s and early 80s, this trend also found its way into Brazilian music. Brazilian musicians combined these influences with their own musical traditions to create a unique new sound. The creators of the Portuguese label Mad About Records have captured this era perfectly on their compilation series “Disco E Cultura”. The recently released second installment is not to be missed, because it has once again turned out to be absolutely great!
Back from the past, the musical present also offers us exciting and highly interesting releases. The Ezra Collective from London have already caused quite a stir and won the Mercury Prize in 2023 for their last album. Now they are back with their new album “Dance, No One’s Watching”. The album is about the act of dancing. Anyone who loves to dance knows the joy and euphoria that a night of dancing creates. The songs for the album were written on the extensive tours of the past year and document the inspirations of the different dance floors they discovered on the road. The Ezra Collective has once again created a wonderful and very varied album that you should definitely listen to.
On their new album “Radio Chevere”, Rio 18 have expanded their sound from the previously mainly Brazilian-influenced grooves towards other Latin American influences. The album is also designed like a radio show and guest DJ Coco Maria takes listeners on a journey through countless musical styles and stories. With stopovers in Uruguay, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, California, New York and countless other sonic destinations via samba, salsa, funk, cumbia, joropo, disco, psychedelic and electronic, “Radio Chévere” is also a musical metaphor for migration – a journey from one continent, from one life to another. Great, the album of the week!
Finally, we have the debut album by the New Regency Orchestra, an 18-piece Latin jazz big band from London. They are fascinated by the musical melting pot of New York in the 1950s, where Afro-Cuban music met American musical traditions. On their debut album they reinterpret classics from the 50s to the 70s and play these songs with fresh fire. Have fun listening!
