In dieser Episode gibt es Jazz in unterschiedlichen Facetten. Das Spektrum reicht von traditionell bis avantgardistisch und von analog bis elektronisch.
Die Band Butcher Brown überzeugt mit ihrem genreübergreifenden Ansatz, der Jazz, House, Indie, Funk, R&B, Soul und mehr, sehr raffiniert verbindet. Auf ihrem neuen Album „Letters From The Atlantic“ überzeugt die Band mit ihrem vielschichtigen und fesselnden Crossover-Jazz.
Sehr interessant finde ich auch das Album „Flukin'“ von Silvan Strauss. Der Hamburger Schlagzeuger vereint hier Soul, Dub, Funk und elektronische Effekte mit einem jazzigen Vibe. So klingt der Jazz von morgen, den man bei Silvan Strauss schon heute hören kann.
Der Gitarist Gregory Uhlmann und der Saxophonist Josh Johnson sind beide noch vom großartigen Debütalbum der Band SML in bester Erinnerung. Nun haben sie sich mit dem Bassisten Sam Wilkes als Trio zusammen getan und erneut ein bemerkenswertes Album aufgenommen. Auf elf Instrumentalsongs erforscht das Trio eine vom Jazz geprägte Interpretation elektroakustischer Kammermusik, die am Ende des Albums mit einer wunderbaren Interpretation des Beatles-Songs „The Fool On The Hill“ ihren Höhepunkt hat. Toll!
Cinema Royal ist ein Projekt von Yuval Havkin aka Rejoicer und Nitai Hershkovits, beide sind auch von der Band Apifera bekannt. Nun haben sie gemeinsam das selbstbetitelte Debütalbum von Cinema Royal aufgenommen, das uns entspannte, vom Piano geprägte cinematische Sounds präsentiert. Das finde ich sehr schön!
Der junge Trompeter Jakob Bänsch ist mit seinem zweiten Album „All The Others“ am Start und überzeugt auf voller Länge mit schönem, traditionellem Jazz. Einige der neuen Songs waren auch bei seinem begeisternden Konzert in Tübingen schon zu hören, das er letztes Jahr mit seiner Band im Club Voltaire gespielt hatte.
Nach dem jüngsten Musiker in dieser Sendung, geht es mit dem ältesten Musiker weiter. Marshall Allen ist seit 1958 Mitglied des Sun Ra Arkestras und leitet es auch seit 1995. Anfang des Jahres hat er nun sein erstes Solo-Album unter eigenem Namen veröffentlicht. Zwei Tage nach seinem 100sten Geburtstag am 25. Mai 2024 hat er mit den Aufnahmen begonnen. Das Album „New Dawn“ unterscheidet sich von seinen Arbeiten mit dem Sun Ra Arkestra, die Songs sind insgesamt ruhiger. Allen zeigt hier seine ganz eigene Stimme, die swingt, boppt und auch in die Zukunft blickt, ohne Anzeichen von Stillstand. Ein absolut beeindruckendes Album, die Platte der Woche!
Fast zeitgleich ist auch ein neues Werk vom Sun Ra Arkestra erschienen, mit einer Reihe von Sun Ra Kompositionen, die bisher noch nie aufgenommen wurden. Auch dies ist ein sehr gutes Album. Das Sun Ra Arkestra mit Marshall Allen wird übrigens am 12. Mai 2025 in Mannheim in der Alten Feuerwache spielen.

The band Butcher Brown impresses with its cross-genre approach, which cleverly combines jazz, house, indie, funk, R&B, soul and more. On their new album “Letters From The Atlantic”, the band impresses with its multi-layered and captivating crossover jazz.
I also find the album “Flukin’” by Silvan Strauss very interesting. The Hamburg drummer combines soul, dub, funk and electronic effects with a jazzy vibe. This is the sound of tomorrow’s jazz, which you can already hear today with Silvan Strauss.
Guitarist Gregory Uhlmann and saxophonist Josh Johnson both have fond memories of the great debut album by the band SML. Now they have joined forces with bassist Sam Wilkes as a trio and recorded another remarkable album. On eleven instrumental songs, the trio explores a jazz-influenced interpretation of electro-acoustic chamber music, which culminates at the end of the album with a wonderful interpretation of the Beatles song “The Fool On The Hill”.
