Die musikalische Bandbreite dieser Episode reicht von Jazz über Soul, Funk und Souljazz bis hin zu cinematischen und zum Teil auch etwas rock-affinen und experimentellen Grooves in ungewöhnlichen Konstellationen. Es könnte also spannend werden.
Zum Auftakt gibt es Neues von Brian Jackson, der zusammen mit Masters At Work eine Reihe alter Klassiker neu interpretiert hat. Auch Sven Wunder ist am Start und kündigt sein neues Album mit einem ersten Teaser an. Mit großer Spannung habe ich auch die beiden 7″-EPs der „Reserva Especial“ – Reihe beim spanischen Label Soul 4 Real erwartet. Auf der ersten Folge gibt es auch bisher auf 7″ unveröffentlichte Songs von Terry Callier zu hören.
Das erste Album-Feature gibt es zu Omar’s neuem Album „Brighter The Days“. Auf seinem neunten Album hat die UK-Soul Legende auch zahlreiche Gäste eingeladen, die dem spezifischen Soul von Omar noch zusätzlichen Glanz verleihen. Ein starkes Album, das auf ganzer Linie überzeugt.
Danach geht es mit einem Teaser zum neuen Album von Say She She weiter. Der Song „Cut & Rewind“ klingt schon sehr vielversprechend und ich bin schon sehr auf das im Oktober erscheinende neue Album gespannt.
Das neue Album der Mighty Mocambos wurde in den legendären MPS Studios in Villingen-Schwenningen aufgenommen. Modernste Technik aus den 1960er Jahren garantiert einen perfekten analogen Sound. Die MPS-Studios, mit ihrer berühmten Aufnahme-Geschichte und ihrer speziellen Magie, haben die Band dazu inspiriert ihren break-lastigen Funk-Sound zu verfeinern und ihn mit Ausflügen in Soul-Jazz, psychedelische und cinematische Grooves zu erweitern. Mit „A Higher Frequency“ haben die Mighty Mocambos ihr bislang bestes Album aufgenommen und es ist die Platte der Woche!
Lange Zeit war die Budos Band bei Daptone Records, doch vor einiger Zeit hat Thomas Brenneck mit „Diamond West“ ein neues Label gegründet und daher veröffentlicht die von ihm mitbegründete Budos Band seither auf dem neuen Label. Das schlicht „VII“ betitelte neue Album ist das erste seit 5 Jahren und die Band hat ihren Instrumental-Sound konsequent weiter entwickelt. Die Musiker kennt man vor allem aus zahlreichen Bands die im Funk & Soul Bereich aktiv sind, doch mit der Budos Band begeben sie sich hier auf ein ungewohntes Terrain: Satte Bläsersätze, kräftige Orgellinien, mächtige Drums und viel Percussion treffen auf Gitarren mit viel Fuzz und einem manchmal etwas von Black Sabbath inspiriertem Sound. Grandios!
Cinematischer Breitwand-Sound ist ein Markenzeichen der italienischen Band Calibro 35. Mit ihrem neuen Album „Exploration“ sind sie wieder zum Label Record Kicks zurückgekehrt. Dies feiern sie mit einem fulminanten Album, das auch einige spannende Cover-Versionen enthält.
Bobby Rausch ist keine Person, sondern eine Band. Ein Trio mit einer außergewöhnlichen Besetzung: Drums, Bass-Klarinette und Barriton-Saxophon. Dies wird noch um elektronische Effekte ergänzt und auf ihrem zweiten Album „Stones & Stars“ zu einem spannenden Hybrid aus Jazz und elektronischen Club-Sounds fusioniert, das man so noch nicht gehört hat. Daher sollte man sich dieses Album unbedingt anhören!

The musical spectrum of this episode ranges from jazz to soul, funk, and soul jazz to cinematic and, in some cases, somewhat rock-oriented and experimental grooves in unusual constellations. So it could be exciting.
To kick things off, there’s something new from Brian Jackson, who has reinterpreted a number of old classics together with Masters At Work. Sven Wunder is also on board and announces his new album with a first teaser. I was also eagerly awaiting the two 7“ EPs from the ”Reserva Especial“ series on the Spanish label Soul 4 Real. The first installment also features previously unreleased 7″ tracks by Terry Callier.
The first album feature is Omar’s new album “Brighter The Days.” On his ninth album, the UK soul legend has also invited numerous guests who add extra sparkle to Omar’s specific soul sound. It’s a strong album that is convincing across the board.

The Budos Band was with Daptone Records for a long time, but some time ago Thomas Brenneck founded a new label, Diamond West, and since then the Budos Band, which he co-founded, has been releasing on the new label. The new album, simply titled “VII,” is the first in five years, and the band has consistently developed its instrumental sound. The musicians are best known from numerous bands active in the funk and soul scene, but with the Budos Band they are venturing into unfamiliar territory: rich brass sections, powerful organ lines, mighty drums, and lots of percussion meet guitars with lots of fuzz and a sound sometimes inspired by Black Sabbath. Magnificent!
Cinematic widescreen sound is a trademark of the Italian band Calibro 35. With their new album “Exploration,” they have returned to the Record Kicks label. They celebrate this with a brilliant album that also includes some exciting cover versions.
Bobby Rausch is not a person, but a band. A trio with an unusual line-up: drums, bass clarinet, and baritone saxophone. This is complemented by electronic effects and fused on their second album “Stones & Stars” into an exciting hybrid of jazz and electronic club sounds that has never been heard before.
