In dieser Episode begeben wir uns wieder auf eine Reise in die Welt des Global Soul und genießen die wunderbare Vielfalt der einzelnen Stile. Im Fokus steht eine Reihe interessanter neuer Alben.
Das erste neue Album kommt von El Michels Affair, eine Band die 2002 von Leon Michels gegründet wurde. Er war auch Gründungsmitglied bei einigen anderen bekannten Soul & Funk Bands wie zum Beispiel den Dap-Kings und der Menahan Street Band. Außerdem hat er für Aloe Blacc das Album „Good Things“ mit dem Hit „I Need A Dollar“ produziert. Inzwischen ist er ein gefragter Produzent und im Mainstream erfolgreiche Künstlerinnen wie Norah Jones und Clairo ließen ihre aktuellen Alben von ihm produzieren. Auf dem neuen Album „24 HR Sports“ von seiner Band El Michels Affair sind Norah Jones und Clairo, neben anderen Künstler*Innen, mit Gastauftritten vertreten. Das Album ist auch deswegen ein abwechslungsreiches und vielschichtiges Werk geworden, das den unverwechselbaren Sound von El Michels Affair einmal mehr auf eindrucksvolle Weise zum Glänzen bringt.
La Chooma kreieren auf ihrem Album „Local Spirits“ eine spannende Mischung aus psychedelischem Dub, afro-lateinamerikanischen Rhythmen und vom Jazz inspirierten kosmischen Grooves. Die Musik des 6-köpfigen Ensembles ist einerseits in globalen Traditionen verwurzelt und andererseits perfekt für moderne Tanzflächen. Das klingt ziemlich interessant und es ist ein großartiges Debüt-Album!
Auf Mocambo Records ist das selbstbetitelte Album-Debüt von Peki Momes erschienen. Bereits ihre ersten beiden 7″-Singles haben große Begeisterung ausgelöst und die Erwartungen auf das erste Album waren dem entsprechend hoch. Dirty Disco, Fuzzy Funk, anatolische Rare Grooves, experimentelle Synthesizer-Klänge, Library Music und japanischer City Pop verschmelzen auf natürliche Weise mit ihrer unverwechselbaren Stimme zu einem einzigartigen, ätherischen Outernational-Sound, der ganz ihr eigener ist. Peki Momes hat das Album mit Unterstützung des Produzenten Dustin Braun und einer Gruppe äußerst talentierter Jazzmusiker aufgenommen. Es ist wunderbar geworden und begeistert auf ganzer Linie!
Danach geht es musikalisch nach Brasilien. Adrian Younge hat zusammen mit der Sängerin und Schauspielerin Samantha Schmütz das wunderbare Album „Samantha E Adrian“ aufgenommen. Auf diesem Album verschmelzen musikalische Einflüsse aus Rio und Los Angeles zu einer opulenten, cinematischen Klanglandschaft, die von zwei musikalischen Seelenverwandten geschaffen wurde. Großartig!
Luizga und iZem haben sich in Lissabon kennengelernt und sie beschlossen zusammen Musik zu machen. Zwischen 2022 und 2025 entstanden zahlreiche Songs, die afro-brasilianische Wurzeln, elektronische Texturen und transatlantisches Songwriting auf wunderbare Weise miteinander verbinden. Die Musik vereint Luizgas melodischen und spirituellen Gesang mit iZems urbaner und moderner Produktion. Auf diese Weise haben die beiden Künstler eine tief verwurzelte und zugleich universelle Musik geschaffen. Der Titelsong „Yemamaya“ ist von zentraler Bedeutung auf diesem Album und er ist in zwei Versionen, dem Orginal und dem Remix von David Walters, enthalten. Es ist ein durchgängig großartiges Album geworden, das in dieser Episode die Platte der Woche ist.
Das letzte Album-Highlight in dieser Sendung ist ein weiteres Werk an dem Adrian Younge maßgeblich beteiligt ist. In der von ihm zusammen mit Ali Shaheed Muhammad ins Leben gerufenen Reihe Jazz Is Dead ist die 24. Folge erschienen, bei der Dom Salvador im Mittelpunkt steht. Der legendäre brasilianische Musiker hat in den 60er und 70er Jahren bahnbrechende Alben aufgenommen, welche die brasilianische Musik entscheidend geprägt haben. Er hat einen Raum für das schwarze Bewusstsein in der brasilianischen Musikszene geschaffen, indem er amerikanischen Jazz und Funk mit afro-brasilianischen Rhythmen verschmolz. Um ihn zu ehren haben Adrian Younge und Ali Shaheed Muhammad eine Sammlung von Kompositionen geschaffen, die zusammen mit Dom Salvador seinen bahnbrechenden Sound weiterführen. Dabei ist ein bemerkenswert gutes Album entstanden, nicht zuletzt auch aufgrund Adrian Younges moderner analoger Produktion. Viel Vergnügen beim Anhören dieser Episode!

In this episode, we embark on another journey into the world of global soul and enjoy the wonderful diversity of the individual styles. The focus is on a series of interesting new albums.
The first new album comes from El Michels Affair, a band founded in 2002 by Leon Michels. He was also a founding member of several other well-known soul and funk bands, such as the Dap-Kings and the Menahan Street Band. He also produced the album “Good Things” for Aloe Blacc, which included the hit “I Need A Dollar.” He is now a sought-after producer, and mainstream artists such as Norah Jones and Clairo have had him produce their latest albums. Norah Jones and Clairo, among other artists, make guest appearances on the new album “24 HR Sports” by his band El Michels Affair. This has resulted in a varied and multi-layered work that once again impressively showcases the unmistakable sound of El Michels Affair.
On their album “Local Spirits,” La Chooma creates an exciting mix of psychedelic dub, Afro-Latin American rhythms, and jazz-inspired cosmic grooves. The music of the six-piece ensemble is rooted in global traditions on the one hand and perfect for modern dance floors on the other. It sounds pretty interesting, and it’s a great debut album!
Peki Momes‘ self-titled debut album has been released on Mocambo Records. Their first two 7″ singles already generated a lot of excitement, and expectations for the first album were correspondingly high. Dirty disco, fuzzy funk, Anatolian rare grooves, experimental synthesizer sounds, library music, and Japanese city pop blend naturally with her distinctive voice to create a unique, ethereal outernational sound that is entirely her own. Peki Momes recorded the album with the support of producer Dustin Braun and a group of extremely talented jazz musicians. It turned out wonderfully and is a hit across the board!
Next, we’re heading to Brazil for some music. Adrian Younge recorded the wonderful album “Samantha E Adrian” together with singer and actress Samantha Schmütz. On this album, musical influences from Rio and Los Angeles merge into an opulent, cinematic soundscape created by two musical soulmates. Great!
Luizga and iZem met in Lisbon and decided to make music together. Between 2022 and 2025, they wrote numerous songs that beautifully combine Afro-Brazilian roots, electronic textures, and transatlantic songwriting. The music combines Luizga’s melodic and spiritual vocals with iZem’s urban and modern production. In this way, the two artists have created music that is both deeply rooted and universal. The title track “Yemamaya” is central to this album and is included in two versions, the original and a remix by David Walters. It’s a consistently great album, which is the record of the week in this episode.
The last album highlight in this program is another work in which Adrian Younge plays a major role. The 24th episode of the Jazz Is Dead series, which he created together with Ali Shaheed Muhammad, has been released, featuring Dom Salvador. The legendary Brazilian musician recorded groundbreaking albums in the 1960s and 1970s that had a decisive influence on Brazilian music. He created a space for black consciousness in the Brazilian music scene by fusing American jazz and funk with Afro-Brazilian rhythms. To honor him, Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad have created a collection of compositions that, together with Dom Salvador, continue his groundbreaking sound. The result is a remarkably good album, not least because of Adrian Younge’s modern analog production. Enjoy listening to this episode!
