Die Soul-Musik ist bunt und einige ihrer unterschiedlichen Klangfarben streifen wir in dieser Epsiode. Zum Auftakt gibt es einige aktuelle Aufnahmen mit etwas psychedelischen Sounds oder auch Northern Soul Anklängen. Danach wirft uns ein Timewarp zurück in die 1960er Jahre. Die Macher des Labels Soul 4 Real aus Bilbao haben in den Archiven von Stax und Volt Records gegraben und einige brillante Aufnahmen gefunden, die bislang noch nie auf Vinyl veröffentlicht wurden. Diese Songs haben sie auf zwei wunderbaren 7″-EPs in ihrer Reserva Especial – Reihe herausgebracht.
Nach dieser kleinen Southern Soul Runde geht es weiter mit politisch engagiertem Soul. Der wunderbare Song „Peace, Love And Understanding“ stammt von einem unbekannten Künstler und wurde von Tommy Søvik im Rahmen seines Buchprojekts als 7″ Single veröffentlicht. Großartig! Das gilt sowohl für den den Song als auch für das außerordentlich interessante und informative Buch „Soul Voices“.
Lou Bonds selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum aus dem Jahr 1974 wurde vor ein paar Monaten wiederveröffentlicht. Ein guter Anlass seinen grandiosen Song „To The Establishment“ in dieser Runde zu spielen.
Die Musik von Jeb Loy Nichols fasziniert mich schon seit seinen Anfägen mit den Fellow Travellers. Nun hat das Label Be With Records eine Compilation mit raren und wenig bekannten Songs aus dem umfangreichen Archiv von Jeb Loy Nichols zusammengestellt. Die Musik von Jeb Loy Nichols ist eine bemerkenswerte Mischung aus Country, Folk und Soul, die auch mal mit Dub-Reggae-Elementen veredelt ist. Die Songs sind feinfühlig, berührend und einfach umwerfend schön!
Der nächste musikalische Schwenk führt uns zu sanften sonnendurchfluteten Klängen, wie sie Ende der 70er und Anfang der 80er Jahre aus kalifornischen Radiosendern drangen. Die Rede ist von Musik die als Yacht-Rock oder auch AOR bekannt wurde, vornehmlich von US-amerikanischen Bands interpretiert. Doch auch fernab der Pazifikküste haben diese Sounds einen fruchtbaren Boden gefunden. Es mag überraschend klingen, aber auch in Deutschland und Österreich gab es in dieser Zeit Bands die sich davon inspirieren ließen und tolle Songs aufgenommen haben. Die Compilation „Under And Above The Clouds“ präsentiert erstmalig eine profunde Auswahl großartiger Yacht-Rock Tracks. Die Compilation wurde von Günter Stöppel und Tobias Kirmayer zusammengestellt und als Co-Op-Veröffentlichung von Tramp Records und The Outer Edge als Vinyl-LP herausgebracht. Dies ist definitiv ein ausgezeichnetes Album und die Platte der Woche!
Die 2018 erschienene Compilation „Boogie On The Mainline“ passt auch ganz gut dazu und daher geht es mit Boogie aus Deutschland und Österreich weiter. Auch hier sind wieder erstaunliche Aufnahmen ausgegraben worden. Es gibt noch viel zu entdecken.
Boogie ist auch das Thema der nächsten Compilation die in dieser Episode vorgestellt wird: Auf „Eccentric Boogie“ finden wir ausschließlich exzellente Boogie Stücke, eins besser als das andere. Wow, das ist ganz große Klasse und ohne Einschränkung empfehlenswert. Viel Vergnügen beim Anhören dieser Episode!

Soul music is colorful, and in this episode we touch on some of its different tones. We start with some current recordings with slightly psychedelic sounds or hints of Northern Soul. Then a time warp takes us back to the 1960s. The creators of the Soul 4 Real label from Bilbao dug through the archives of Stax and Volt Records and found some brilliant recordings that had never been released on vinyl before. They released these songs on two wonderful 7″ EPs in their Reserva Especial series.
After this little Southern soul round, we continue with politically engaged soul. The wonderful song “Peace, Love And Understanding” is by an unknown artist and was released as a 7″ single by Tommy Søvik as part of his book project. Great! That applies both to the song and to the extraordinarily interesting and informative book “Soul Voices”.
Lou Bonds‘ self-titled debut album from 1974 was re-released a few months ago. A good occasion to play his magnificent song “To The Establishment” in this round.
Jeb Loy Nichols‘ music has fascinated me since his early days with the Fellow Travellers. Now the label Be With Records has compiled a compilation of rare and little-known songs from Jeb Loy Nichols‘ extensive archive. Jeb Loy Nichols‘ music is a remarkable blend of country, folk, and soul, sometimes enhanced with elements of dub reggae. The songs are sensitive, touching, and simply stunningly beautiful!
The next musical shift takes us to the gentle, sun-drenched sounds that emanated from Californian radio stations in the late 70s and early 80s. We’re talking about music that became known as yacht rock or AOR, mainly performed by US bands. But even far away from the Pacific coast, these sounds found fertile ground. It may sound surprising, but even in Germany and Austria there were bands at that time who were inspired by it and recorded great songs. The compilation “Under And Above The Clouds” presents a profound selection of great yacht rock tracks for the first time. The compilation was put together by Günter Stöppel and Tobias Kirmayer and released as a co-op release by Tramp Records and The Outer Edge on vinyl LP. This is definitely an excellent album and the record of the week!
The 2018 compilation “Boogie On The Mainline” fits in quite well with this, so we continue with boogie from Germany and Austria. Here, too, some amazing recordings have been unearthed. There is still a lot to discover.
