Is That Jazz?
In dieser Episode geht es mal wieder um Jazz und die Bandbreite reicht von klassischen bis hin zu avantgardistischen Aufnahmen. Egal, ob im traditionellen Jazz verortet oder vom Vibe des Jazz inspiriert, hier bekommt ihr eine bunte und vielfältige Auswahl zu hören.
Das erste Schwerpunkt-Thema ist das neue Album „Songbook“ vom Pianisten Kenny Barron. Er hat 15 Stücke aus seinem umfangreichen Repertoire neu aufgenommen und sie dieses Mal um einen Gesangspart erweitert. Die Songtexte wurden mit einer Ausnahme von Janice Jarret geschrieben. Für die Neuinterpretationen dieser Stücke mit Gesang, hat Kenny Barron eine Reihe interessanter und beeindruckender Sänger*Innen ausgewählt. Es ist ein wunderbares Album geworden, das ich uneingeschränkt empfehlen kann.
Das nächste Album, das im Fokus steht, ist „Orbits“ von der Neuseeländischen Band The Circling Sun. Die Band transportiert die kosmische Energie des spirituellen Jazz der 70er Jahre in die Gegenwart und sie klingen daher keineswegs retro. Anspielungen auf Künstler wie Lonnie Liston Smith, Roland Kirk, oder auch Azymuth sind unüberhörbar. Mit „Orbits“ haben The Circling Sun einen zeitgemäßen Ambient Jazz geschaffen, der sowohl Jazzfans als auch Neulingen ein tiefgreifendes Hörerlebnis bietet.
Danach biegen wir in Richtung elektronischer, vom Jazz inspirierter Klänge ab. Das Collettivo Immaginario macht den Auftakt und zwar mit einem Song aus dem sehr empfehlenswerten Album „Oltreoceano“, das ich bereits in Episode 636 etwas ausführlicher vorgestellt habe. Dies ist zugleich eine gute Überleitung zu Johannes Arzberger und seinem neuen Album „Rebirth“. Dies präsentiert eine interessante Melange aus Jazz, Instrumental-HipHop und Electronica. Der Pianist und Komponist Johannes Arzberger stammt aus Oldenburg und hat das Album zusammen mit 7apes und Michael McFly produziert. Die Musik hat mir auf Anhieb gut gefallen und es lohnt sich das bislang nur digital bei Bandcamp veröffentlichte Album mal anzuhören.
Das Album der Woche kommt von der Band SML aus Los Angeles. Mit ihrem zweiten Album „How You Been“ hat die Band ein mega spannendes Album geschaffen. Die Musik von SML ist sicherlich nicht leicht konsumierbar, doch wenn man sich eingewöhnt hat, dann erschließt sich die darin steckende Energie und Experimentierfreude. Mal klingt es so, als würde es im Chaos enden, doch dann wendet sich der Song wieder in eine andere spannende Richtung. Es kann durchaus auch mal funky klingen, an Kraut-Rock oder auch an Miles Davis in seiner elektronischen Phase erinnern. Musik die einen in ihren Bann zieht. Ich bin restlos begeistert, ein faszinierend gutes Album!

Is That Jazz?
This episode is all about jazz again, and the spectrum ranges from classic to avant-garde recordings. Whether rooted in traditional jazz or inspired by the vibe of jazz, you’ll find a colorful and diverse selection here.
The first focus is the new album „Songbook“ by pianist Kenny Barron. He has re-recorded 15 pieces from his extensive repertoire, this time adding vocals. With one exception, the lyrics were written by Janice Jarrett. For these reinterpretations with vocals, Kenny Barron has chosen a number of interesting and impressive singers. It’s a wonderful album that I can wholeheartedly recommend.
The next album in focus is „Orbits“ by the New Zealand band The Circling Sun. The band transports the cosmic energy of 1970s spiritual jazz into the present day, and their sound is anything but retro. References to artists like Lonnie Liston Smith, Roland Kirk, and Azymuth are unmistakable. With „Orbits,“ The Circling Sun have created a contemporary ambient jazz that offers a profound listening experience for both jazz fans and newcomers.
Next, we turn towards electronic, jazz-inspired sounds. Collettivo Immaginario kicks things off with a song from their highly recommended album „Oltreoceano,“ which I already discussed in more detail in episode 636. This also serves as a good segue to Johannes Arzberger and his new album „Rebirth.“ It presents an interesting blend of jazz, instrumental hip-hop, and electronica. The pianist and composer Johannes Arzberger hails from Oldenburg and produced the album together with 7apes and Michael McFly. I liked the music immediately, and it’s well worth giving this album, currently only available digitally on Bandcamp, a listen.
This week’s album comes from the Los Angeles band SML. With their second album, „How You Been,“ the band has created a truly exciting album. SML’s music certainly isn’t easy listening, but once you get used to it, the energy and experimental spirit within it become apparent. At times, it sounds like it’s about to descend into chaos, but then the song takes another intriguing turn. It can even sound funky, reminiscent of Krautrock or Miles Davis in his electronic phase. Music that captivates you. I’m absolutely thrilled; it’s a fascinatingly good album!
