Willkommen in der wunderbaren Welt des Soul. Auf unserem musikalischen Streifzug werden uns in dieser Episode wieder ganz unterschiedliche Klangfarben begegnen.
Zum Auftakt gibt es eine Runde mit 60er Jahre Sounds im Northern Soul Vibe. Dazu passen dann im Anschluss die beiden neuen 4-track EPs aus der „From Detroit With Love“ Reihe, die wieder unveröffentlichte Aufnahmen aus den Archiven von Motown präsentieren. Es ist wirklich überraschend, was für Perlen noch unveröffentlicht in den Archiven lagern und darauf warten endlich entdeckt zu werden.
Die Compilation-Reihe „This Is DJs Choice“ wurde 2008 vom Label Unique Records gestartet. Das Label wurde 1988 von Henry Storch gegründet. Die jetzt erschienene 5. Folge von „This Is DJs Choice“ ist dem 2018 verstorbenen Label-Gründer gewidmet und wurde von Eddie Piller und Frollein Taube zusammen gestellt. Beide haben häufig zusammen mit Henry Storch aufgelegt. Wenn man die Sets eines DJs gut kennt, dann wird man Songs kennen die untrennbar mit seiner Person verbunden sind. Vieles davon ist in die Zusammenstellung dieser Compilation eingeflossen, die dadurch ein schönes Andenken an Henry Storch geworden ist!
Mit dem Debütalbum von Wanda Felicia kommen wir in der musikalischen Gegenwart an. Mit „Now Is The Time …“ tritt die Sängerin ins Rampenlicht, nachdem sie Anfang der 2000er Jahre in der New Yorker House und Nu-Jazz Szene erste Auftritte hatte. Zusammen mit der Timmion Record Hausband Cold Diamond & Mink hat sie ein atemberaubendes Album mit gefühlvollen Songs eingespielt, die sowohl zeitlos als auch erfrischend aktuell klingen. Ein großartiges Debüt dieser erstklassigen Sängerin.
Beim nächsten Album Highlight sind Cold Diamond & Mink ebenfalls involviert: Zum zweiten mal spielen sie mit dem aus Wyoming stammenden Sänger Jeb Loy Nichols zusammen. Seine Songs haben sowohl Country und Folk-Wurzeln, aber sie sind auch im gleichen Maße tief im Soul verankert. Die melancholisch-sanfte Stimme Jeb Loy Nichols verleiht den Songs eine besondere Tiefe, die ich einfach wunderbar finde. Die Begleitung durch Cold Diamonds & Mink ist kongenial, subtil arrangiert, reduziert und zugleich pointiert. Die perfekte Begleitung für Jeb Loy Nichols, dem mit „This House Is Empty Without You“ wieder ein Meisterwerk des zurückhaltenden Souls gelungen ist. Die Platte der Woche!
Lance Ferguson, der vor allem als Bandleader der Funk-Band The Bamboos bekannt ist, hat eine dritte Folge seines Rare Groove Spectrums aufgenommen. Einmal mehr interpretiert er klassische Rare Grooves neu, doch dieses mal sind auch einige aktuelle Songs dabei. Ein solides und in sich geschlossenes Album.
Im Süden Frankreichs gibt es eine obskure Band die sich Saint Tropez Orchestra nennt. Es ist nicht viel über die Band bekannt, es handelt sich um die Hausband des kleinen Labels Dime Records, das unter anderem von Lee Skelly betrieben wird. Er wird auch als Komponist und Produzent auf den Alben der Band genannt. Nun ist ihr zweites Album „Heavy Soul Dance Party“ in einer limitierten Vinyl-Auflage vom Label Funk Night wiederveröffentlicht worden. Ende 2024 war das Album digital von Dime Records veröffentlicht worden. Wie der Album-Titel schon andeutet erwartet die Hörer*Innen heftig groovender Soul Sound. Die Songs klingen alle ziemlich roh, ungeschliffen und ziemlich druckvoll. Klasse!
Die amerikanische Band Lettuce hat ihr neus Album „Cook“ betitelt. Da ist naheliegend, aber auch sehr pfiffig, dem Album eine Rezeptsammlung mit Weinempfehlungen beizulegen. Musikalisch servieren die Gourmets knackigen und bläserlastigen Soul & Funk Sound, der sich auch zu einem leckeren Mahlzeit und passenden Wein genießen lässt. Die Kalorien kann man ja anschließend wieder abtanzen, die passende Musik liefert die Band dazu. Viel Vergnügen beim Anhören dieser Episode!

Welcome to the wonderful world of soul. On our musical journey, we will once again encounter a wide variety of sounds in this episode.
We kick things off with a round of 60s sounds in a Northern soul vibe. This is followed by two new 4-track EPs from the “From Detroit With Love” series, which once again present unreleased recordings from the Motown archives. It’s truly surprising what gems are still lying unreleased in the archives, waiting to finally be discovered.
The compilation series “This Is DJs Choice” was launched in 2008 by the label Unique Records. The label was founded in 1988 by Henry Storch. The fifth installment of “This Is DJs Choice,” which has just been released, is dedicated to the label founder, who passed away in 2018, and was compiled by Eddie Piller and Frollein Taube. Wanda Felicia’s debut album brings us into the musical present. With “Now Is The Time …”, the singer steps into the spotlight after making her first appearances on the New York house and nu-jazz scene in the early 2000s. Together with the Timmion Record house band Cold Diamond & Mink, she has recorded a breathtaking album of soulful songs that sound both timeless and refreshingly contemporary. A great debut from this first-class singer.
Cold Diamond & Mink are also involved in the next album highlight: for the second time, they are playing with Wyoming-born singer Jeb Loy Nichols. His songs have both country and folk roots, but they are also deeply rooted in soul. Jeb Loy Nichols‘ melancholic, gentle voice gives the songs a special depth that I find simply wonderful. The accompaniment by Cold Diamonds & Mink is congenial, subtly arranged, reduced and at the same time pointed. The perfect accompaniment for Jeb Loy Nichols, who has once again succeeded in creating a masterpiece of restrained soul with “This House Is Empty Without You”. The record of the week!
Lance Ferguson, best known as the bandleader of the funk band The Bamboos, has recorded a third installment of his Rare Groove Spectrum. Once again, he reinterprets classic rare grooves, but this time there are also some current songs included. A solid and cohesive album.
In the south of France, there is an obscure band called Saint Tropez Orchestra. Not much is known about the band, but they are the house band of the small label Dime Records, which is run by Lee Skelly, among others. He is also credited as a composer and producer on the band’s albums. Now their second album, “Heavy Soul Dance Party,” has been re-released in a limited vinyl edition by the label Funk Night. The album was originally released digitally by Dime Records at the end of 2024. As the album title suggests, listeners can expect a heavily grooving soul sound. The songs all sound pretty raw, unpolished, and quite powerful. Great!
The American band Lettuce has titled their new album “Cook.” It’s obvious, but also very clever, to include a collection of recipes with wine recommendations with the album. Musically, these gourmets serve up a crisp, brass-heavy soul and funk sound that can be enjoyed with a delicious meal and the perfect wine.
