In 120 Minuten um die Welt!
In dieser Episode reisen wir wieder einmal musikalisch rund um diese Welt. Es gibt einige spannende Neuigkeiten in Form von interessanter und abwechslungsreicher Musik.
Das erste Album-Highlight ist das Debüt der Band Nusantara Beat aus Amsterdam. Alle Bandmitglieder haben indonesische Wurzeln und dies prägt auch ihre Musik. Nach drei erfolgreichen Singles bei Bongo Joe Records haben sie nun ihr erstes Album bei Glitterbeat veröffentlicht. Elf funkelnde Songs die von indonesischem Pop der 1960er Jahre inspiriert sind und dies auf geniale Weise mit psychedelischen Grooves und zeitgenössischen Klangtexturen verwebt. Auf diese Weise hat die Band einen einzigartigen und äußerst interessanten Sound entwickelt. Ein exzellentes Debütalbum.
Das Produzenten und Musiker Team Lewis Moody und Ziggy Zeitgeist, besser bekannt als Ex Generation, legt bei seinem zweiten Album „The Mumbai Exchange“ den Fokus auf den Fernen Osten. Das Ziel ist Mumbai, das auch das Epizentrum von Bollywood ist. Ex Generation haben zusammen mit einer Reihe erstklassiger Musiker ein hochinteressantes Album eingespielt, das westliche Boogie & Disco Grooves mit Bollywood Sounds fusioniert. Sehr schön!
Die dänische Band Sunbörn, früher bekannt als Kuti-Mangoes, hat sich für ihr neues Album mit dem italienischen Produzenten Clap! Clap! zusammen getan. Außerdem sind noch einige Gast-Sänger*Innen mit dabei. Die Band hat schon immer viele globale Einflüsse verarbeitet, doch mit diese Kollaborationen wird die Musik von Sunbörn noch abwechslungsreicher und auch tanzbarer.
Bereits im April diesen Jahres wurde die „Kebab Discoteque“ EP von Souleance digital veröffentlicht. Nun ist die EP auch auf 12″ Vinyl veröffentlicht worden. Souleance sind für ihre Dancefloor orientierten Stücke bekannt. Ihr Ansatz für diese EP ihren Sound mit orientalischen Einflüssen zu fusionieren ist eine Bereicherung.
Die Geschichte von Ata Kak ist schon ziemlich kurios. Der in Ghana geborene Musiker begibt sich auf eine Reise in die Diaspora, die ihn zuerst nach Deutschland und anschließend nach Kanada führt. Dort nimmt er ein Album auf, das er 1994 als Kassette in einer Auflage von 50 Stück veröffentlicht. Das Interesse ist enttäuschend gering und nur wenige werden verkauft. Die meisten Kassetten verschenkt er an Freunde und Verwandte. Doch 2002 nahm die Geschichte eine Wendung: Brian Shimkovitz, Gründer des Blogs und Plattenlabels Awesome Tapes From Africa, kauft eine Kopie der Kassette an einem Straßenstand in Ghana. Er war von der Musik begeistert und eine umfangreichen Suche nach Ata Kak begann. Erst 2015 war es soweit und das Album konnte als LP wiederveröffentlicht werden. Die Songs die 1994 niemand interessiert haben sind inzwischen bei Spotify millionenfach gestreamt worden. Eine späte Anerkennung für Ata Kak, dessen Musik einen einzigartigen Charme hat. Nun gibt es mehr als 30 Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung von Ata Kak’s Kassetten-Debüt erstmalig neue Musik von ihm. Auf Awesome Tapes From Afrika ist vor kurzem sein neues Album „Batakari“ erschienen. Die Aufnahmen sind professioneller, ambitionierter und auch komplexer als die Songs von seinem Debüt. Trotzdem ist es ihm gelungen den kuriosen und einzigartigen Charme seiner Musik zu bewahren. Großartig!
Nachdem mir das „Wusul“, das zeite Album von Shay Hazan, sehr gut gefallen hat, war ich auf sein neues Album „When It Rains It Pours“ sehr gespannt. Auf seinem neuen Album hat sich Shay Hazan auf seine Entwicklung als Studiokünstler fokussiert. Techniken wie Sampling, Überlagerung und die Erforschung von Texturen stehen im Mittelpunkt. Dies hat einen veränderten Sound zur Folge, trotzdem geht die Unmittelbarkeit der Live-Musikalität nicht verloren.
Zum Schluß gibt es noch einige Produktionen die stark vom Afrobeat inspieriert sind. In diesem Bereich sind die Antibalas aus Brooklyn schon seit 1998 aktiv. Auf ihrem neuen Album „Hourglass“ kehren sie zu ihren instrumentalen Wurzeln zurück und liefern ein solides und stimmiges Afrobeat Album, das sich hören lassen kann!

Around the world in 120 minutes!
In this episode, we once again take a musical journey around the world. There is some exciting news in the form of interesting and varied releases.
The first album highlight is the debut of the band Nusantara Beat from Amsterdam. All band members have Indonesian roots, which also influences their music. After three successful singles on Bongo Joe Records, they have now released their first album on Glitterbeat. Eleven sparkling songs inspired by 1960s Indonesian pop, ingeniously interwoven with psychedelic grooves and contemporary sound textures. In this way, the band has developed a unique and extremely interesting sound. An excellent debut album.
The producer and musician team Lewis Moody and Ziggy Zeitgeist, better known as Ex Generation, focus on the Far East on their second album, “The Mumbai Exchange.” The destination is Mumbai, which is also the epicenter of Bollywood. Together with a number of first-class musicians, Ex Generation have recorded a highly interesting album that fuses Western boogie & disco grooves with Bollywood sounds. Very nice!
The Danish band Sunbörn, formerly known as Kuti-Mangoes, has teamed up with Italian producer Clap! Clap! for their new album. Several guest singers are also featured. The band has always incorporated many global influences, but these collaborations make Sunbörn’s music even more diverse and danceable.
Souleance’s “Kebab Discoteque” EP was released digitally in April of this year. Now the EP has also been released on 12″ vinyl. Souleance are known for their dancefloor-oriented tracks. Their approach to this EP, fusing their sound with oriental influences, is an enrichment.
The story of Ata Kak is quite curious. The Ghana-born musician embarks on a journey into the diaspora, which first takes him to Germany and then to Canada. There he records an album, which he releases in 1994 as a cassette in a limited edition of 50 copies. Interest is disappointingly low and only a few are sold. He gave most of the cassettes away to friends and relatives. But in 2002, the story took a turn: Brian Shimkovitz, founder of the blog and record label Awesome Tapes From Africa, bought a copy of the cassette at a street stall in Ghana. He was thrilled by the music and began an extensive search for Ata Kak. It wasn’t until 2015 that the album was re-released on LP. The songs that no one was interested in in 1994 have now been streamed millions of times on Spotify. This is belated recognition for Ata Kak, whose music has a unique charm. Now, more than 30 years after the release of Ata Kak’s cassette debut, new music from him is available for the first time. His new album “Batakari” was recently released on Awesome Tapes From Africa. The recordings are more professional, ambitious, and complex than the songs on his debut. Nevertheless, he has managed to retain the curious and unique charm of his music. Great!
After really enjoying “Wusul,” Shay Hazan’s second album, I was very excited about his new album, “When It Rains It Pours.” On his new album, Shay Hazan has focused on his development as a studio artist. Techniques such as sampling, layering, and the exploration of textures take center stage. This results in a changed sound, yet the immediacy of live musicality is not lost.
Finally, there are a few productions that are heavily inspired by Afrobeat. Antibalas from Brooklyn have been active in this field since 1998. On their new album “Hourglass,” they return to their instrumental roots and deliver a solid and coherent Afrobeat album that is well worth listening to!
