It’s Soul Time!
Es gibt eine Reihe interessanter Alben und Singles aus dem Soul Bereich, die in den letzten Wochen erschienen sind. Die Bandbreite ist groß und es verspricht eine abwechslungsreiche Episode zu werden. Mit einer Runde Library Music geht es los und nach ein paar Klassikern gibt es die erste Vorstellung eines neuen Albums. Das Saint Tropez Orchestra war in den letzten gut zwei Jahren sehr produktiv und hat soeben sein viertes Album „Percussions“ veröffentlicht. Der Titel des Albums ist Programm, denn der Bandleader ist Perkussionist und bringt hier die volle Bandbreite seines Instrumentariums zum klingen. Das ist alles sehr schön in kleine 1 bis 2 Minuten lange Instrumental-Stücke eingebettet, die sehr schön in das Library-Musik Spektrum passen.
Danach bleiben wir noch eine Weile in Frankreich hören was der bretonischen Beatmaker Deheb auf seinem Album „Soul Visions“ geschaffen hat. Deheb ist auch ein Teil des Duos Funky Bijou, das seit 2012 bereits sechs Alben veröffentlicht hat. Der Künstler schöpft einen Großteil seiner Inspiration aus Funk & Jazz und so ist es naheliegend das er mit seinem Album „Soul Visions“ eine Hommage an große Künstler dieser Genres aus den frühen 1970er Jahre schaffen möchte. Die Songs sind jeweils einem Künstler gewidmet und tragen deren Vornahmen als Titel. Das Projekt finde ich sehr gelungen und es ist eine feine Sache, die es wert ist gehört zu werden.
Die Sha La Das sind Bill Schalda und seine talentierten Söhne Paul Will und Carmine. Vor kurzem ist ihr zweites Album „Your Picture“ erschienen. Es wurde wieder von Tom Brenneck produziert und auf seinem Label veröffentlicht. Bills klassisches Songwriting und seine üppigen Gesangsarrangements werden von Tom Brenneck in neues Terrain entführt. Er aktualisiert den Doo-Wop mit dem basslastigen Groove und dem wirbelnden Pop einer schlanken und räumlicher Produktion. Ein großartiges Album!
Danach starten wir einen kleinen Ausflug in die wunderbare Welt des Motown Souls der 1960er Jahre. Das spanische Label setzt seine exzellente Reihe „From Detroit With Love“ mit zwei weiteren 7″-EPs fort, die wieder zumeist unveröffentlichte Songs aus den Motown Archiven zu Tage fördern. Songs die schlichtweg klasse sind!
Damit ist der Weg für das Album der Woche bestens bereitet. Denn auch die Angels Of Libra haben auf ihrem mit großer Spannung erwarteten Album „Road To Mandalay“ einige Songs mit 60s Feeling zu bieten. Das Album ist eine abwechslungsreiche Odyssee durch die Welt des analogen Soul, die sich über 12 Songs erstreckt. Der Band gelingt es eine Brücke zwischen klassischem und modernem Sound zu schlagen. Die Songs verbinden Vintage-Wärme mit emotionalem Storytelling und das macht dieses Album zum bislang ambitioniertesten Werk der Band. Das Warten auf dieses Album hat sich gelohnt, es ist Spitzenklasse!
Zum Schluss setzt Dave Lee mit der Compilation „Back To The Old School, The Return Of Disco Rap Part One“ ein weiteres Highlight. Auf dieser 12″-EP präsentiert der Disco-Rap-Liebhaber und Sammler Dave Lee drei Klassiker aus den frühen 1980er Jahren in Remix-Versionen, die er für die Dancefloors von heute angefertigt hat. Das ganze hat er noch eine eigene Neu-Produktion ergänzt. Das gefäöllt mir sehr und ich bin schon auf weitere Teile dieser Reihe gespannt.

It’s Soul Time!
There are a number of interesting albums and singles from the soul genre that have been released in recent weeks. The range is wide and it promises to be a varied episode. We start with a round of library music and, after a few classics, we present the first new album. The Saint Tropez Orchestra has been very productive over the past two years and has just released its fourth album, “Percussions.” The title of the album says it all, as the bandleader is a percussionist and showcases the full range of his instruments here. It’s all beautifully embedded in short 1- to 2-minute instrumental pieces that fit nicely into the library music spectrum.
After that, we’ll stay in France for a while to hear what Breton beatmaker Deheb has created on his album “Soul Visions.” Deheb is also part of the duo Funky Bijou, which has released six albums since 2012. The artist draws much of his inspiration from funk and jazz, so it’s only natural that he wants to pay homage to the great artists of these genres from the early 1970s with his album “Soul Visions.” Each song is dedicated to an artist and bears their first name as its title. I think the project is very successful and it’s a fine thing that is worth listening to.
The Sha La Das are Bill Schalda and his talented sons Paul Will and Carmine. Their second album, “Your Picture,” was recently released. It was again produced by Tom Brenneck and released on his label. Bill’s classic songwriting and lush vocal arrangements are taken into new territory by Tom Brenneck. He updates doo-wop with bass-heavy grooves and the swirling pop of a sleek and spacious production. A great album!
After that, we’ll take a little trip into the wonderful world of 1960s Motown soul. The Spanish label continues its excellent series “From Detroit With Love” with two more 7″ EPs, which once again feature mostly unreleased songs from the Motown archives. Songs that are simply great!
This sets the stage perfectly for the album of the week. Angels Of Libra also have a few songs with a 60s feel to offer on their eagerly awaited album “Road To Mandalay.” The album is a varied odyssey through the world of analog soul, spanning 12 songs. The band succeeds in building a bridge between classic and modern sound. The songs combine vintage warmth with emotional storytelling, making this album the band’s most ambitious work to date. The wait for this album was worth it—it’s top notch!
Finally, Dave Lee adds another highlight with the compilation “Back To The Old School, The Return Of Disco Rap Part One.” On this 12″ EP, disco rap lover and collector Dave Lee presents three classics from the early 1980s in remix versions he created for today’s dance floors. He has also added his own new production to the mix. I really like it and am already looking forward to further installments in this series.
