It’s Soul Time!
Zum Auftakt gibt es eine kleine Runde mit Soul aus den 1960er Jahren und etwas Northern Soul ist auch dabei. Das erste Album Highlight kommt von Bettye Swann. Sie besaß eine der emotionalsten Stimmen der Soulmusik. Das beim spanischen Label Soul 4 Real erschienene Album „Feel The Feeling“ versammelt 13 Songs aus Betty Swanns Zeit bei Atlantic Records. Die Songs sind in der Zeit zwischen 1972 und 1975 entstanden und schlichtweg großartig.
Auch die zeitgenössische Soulmusik hat immer wieder beeindruckende Veröffentlichungen zu bieten, was die amerikanisch-holländische Sängerin Michelle David mit ihrer Band The Tru-Tones auf ihrem neuen Album „Soul Woman“ eindrucksvoll beweist. Die Palette der Songs ist stilistisch vielfältig und das Spektrum reicht von Uptempo-Soul im Northern Soul Stil und Soul mit Rhythm’n’Blues Anklängen bis hin zu bewegendem Gospel-Soul. Leidenschaftliche Soulmusik vom Feinsten.
Danach richten wir den Fokus auf eine andere Spielart des Souls, die in den letzten Jahren zunehmend beliebter wird: Cinematic Soul. Soundtrack-artige Sounds mit einer kräftigen Prise Soul, die meist instrumental sind. Sehr stark inspiriert durch Aufnahmen der sogenannten Produktionsmusik, oft auch als Library Music bezeichnet, die für Film und Fernsehproduktionen aufgenommen wurde. Der Musiker Toby Pazner hat das Band-Projekt The Olympians gegründet, das seit 2008 in relativ großen zeitlichen Abständen mit bemerkenswerten Veröffentlichungen auffällt. Nach dem Debütalbum in 2016 ist nun das zweite Album „In Search Of A Revival“ erschienen. Auf dem neuen Album verabschiedet sich die Band von den kosmischen Themen, die von der griechisch-römischen Mythologie inspiriert waren und wendet sich einem modernen, irdischeren Ansatz zu, der vom Leben in der aktuell turbulenten Zeit beeinflusst ist. Das Album ist ein üppig arrangiertes Werk mit Streichern und satten Bläsersätzen, sie einen wunderbaren cineastischen Klangteppich ausrollen. Ein Hörgenuss von der ersten bis zur letzten Sekunde. Großartig, die Platte der Woche!
Das Debütalbum der australischen Band Temporary Blessings bewegt sich musikalisch auf einem ähnlichen Terrain. Auch hier sind cineastische Klangteppiche zu hören, die von italienischer und französischer Filmmusik der 1960er Jahre inspiriert sind. Die Band wurde vom Trompeter und Komponisten Liam McGorry gegründet und vereint einige bekannte Musiker aus der Soul-Szene Melbournes, darunter Mitglieder von Surprise Chef, Karate Boogaloo uns Saskwatch. Ich finde das Debüt dieser Band ist wirklich großartig und eine echte Entdeckung!
Mit Owelu Dreamhouse gibt es gleich eine weitere neue Band aus Melbourne zu hören, die mit ihrem selbstbetitelten Debütalbum am Start ist. Die Band besteht aus der Sängerin Nkechi Anele und dem Multi-Instrumentalisten Nic Ryan-Glenie, die beide auch bei der 2019 aufgelösten Band Saskwatch beteiligt waren. Ihre Musik ist eine klangliche Mischung aus cineastischem Soul, Psychedelia und Afrobeat. Eine Mischung die ich ziemlich spannend und gelungen finde!
Zum Schluss wenden wir uns Boogie und Post-Disco aus dem New York der frühen 1980er Jahre zu. Eine Compilation mit bisher unveröffentlichten Stücken des Produzenten Richie Weeks bietet hier den passenden Soundtrack. Auf dem Doppelalbum „The Love Magician Archives Vol.3, Boogie & Post-Disco NYC 1980-1983“ gibt es acht exzellente Aufnahmen von Band-Projekten wie The Jammers, Hot Cargo, Kaviar und Weeks & Co zu hören, bei denen Richie Weeks involviert war. Eine sehr schöne Sache!

It’s Soul Time!
We’ll kick things off with a little roundup of soul from the 1960s, including some Northern Soul. The first album highlight comes from Bettye Swann. She had one of the most emotional voices in soul music. The album “Feel The Feeling,” released by the Spanish label Soul 4 Real, brings together 13 songs from Betty Swann’s time at Atlantic Records. The songs were written between 1972 and 1975 and are simply magnificent.
Contemporary soul music also continues to offer impressive releases, as American-Dutch singer Michelle David and her band The Tru-Tones impressively demonstrate on their new album “Soul Woman.” The songs are stylistically diverse, ranging from uptempo soul in the Northern Soul style and soul with rhythm ‘n’ blues influences to moving gospel soul. Passionate soul music at its finest.
Next, we turn our attention to another variation of soul that has become increasingly popular in recent years: cinematic soul. Soundtrack-like sounds with a strong dash of soul, mostly instrumental. Very strongly inspired by recordings of so-called production music, often referred to as library music, which was recorded for film and television productions. Musician Toby Pazner founded the band project The Olympians, which has been making a name for itself with remarkable releases at relatively long intervals since 2008. Following their debut album in 2016, their second album, “In Search Of A Revival,” has now been released. On the new album, the band bids farewell to the cosmic themes inspired by Greek and Roman mythology and turns to a modern, more earthly approach influenced by life in these turbulent times. The album is a lavishly arranged work with strings and rich brass sections that roll out a wonderful cinematic soundscape. A listening pleasure from the first to the last second. Great, the record of the week!
The debut album by Australian band Temporary Blessings moves in similar musical territory. Here, too, you can hear cinematic soundscapes inspired by Italian and French film music of the 1960s. The band was founded by trumpeter and composer Liam McGorry and brings together several well-known musicians from Melbourne’s soul scene, including members of Surprise Chef, Karate Boogaloo, and Saskwatch. I think this band’s debut is really great and a real discovery!
Owelu Dreamhouse is another new band from Melbourne with their self-titled debut album. The band consists of singer Nkechi Anele and multi-instrumentalist Nic Ryan-Glenie, both of whom were also involved in the band Saskwatch, which disbanded in 2019. Their music is a sonic blend of cinematic soul, psychedelia, and Afrobeat. A mix that I find quite exciting and successful!
Finally, we turn to boogie and post-disco from early 1980s New York. A compilation of previously unreleased tracks by producer Richie Weeks provides the perfect soundtrack. The double album “The Love Magician Archives Vol. 3, Boogie & Post-Disco NYC 1980-1983” features eight excellent recordings from band projects such as The Jammers, Hot Cargo, Kaviar, and Weeks & Co, in which Richie Weeks was involved. A very nice thing!
