Diese Episode bietet ein besonderes musikalisches Programm. Soul ist der rote Faden, der alles verbindet. Das Spektrum reicht von klassischem Soul, wundervollen Folk-Soul Hybriden, psychedelischem Soul, cinematischem Soul bis hin zu innovativen Post-Rock Sounds.
Das erste Album Highlight ist die erste Folge der neuen Compilation – Reihe „Hopes And Dreams“ die bei Tramp Records erschienen ist. Die Compilation wurde von Label-Chef Tobias Kirmayer zusammengestellt und präsentiert rare und bislang unveröffentlichte Psychedelic-Soul Schätze. Die neue Reihe lehnt sich an die auf dem selbem Label erschienene Reihe „Praise Poems“ an. Die Messlatte ist also hoch gesetzt und die Sammlung von elf obskuren, raren und vor allem hervorragenden Songs wird dem in vollem Umfang gerecht. Hier gibt es tolle bislang ungehörte Musik zu entdecken und man kann Tobias Kirmayer zu diesem außerordentlich gut gelungenen Auftakt der neuen Reihe gratulieren. Exzellent und daher das Album der Woche!
Das zweite Album Highlight kommt von Jon Lucien. Das vom Label Kent Records erstmalig auf Vinyl veröffentlichte „Album „In Search Of The Inner Self“ enthält Aufnahmen die Jon Lucien 1969 gemacht hatte, die aber mit Ausnahme der Single „Search For The Inner Self“ nie auf Vinyl veröffentlicht wurden. Jon Lucien hatte die Aufnahmen 1999 im Eigenverlag in einer auf 100 Exemplare limitierten CD veröffentlicht. Die Songs auf dem Album sind durchweg großartig und daher ist es für mich eine große Freude diese auf Vinyl in der Sammlung zu haben. Das Album darf man zu Recht ein essentielles Jon Lucien Album bezeichnen, das in einer Reihe mit „must-have“ Klassikern wie „Rashida“ und „Mind’s Eye“ steht. Großartig!
Davon inspiriert, habe ich einen weiteren Klassiker aus meiner Sammlung ausgegraben, der von Terry Callier kommt. Sein 1973 erschienenes Album „I Just Can’t Help Myself“ war sein drittes und letztes für das Label Cadet Records. Diese drei Alben für Cadet Records waren maßgeblich durch die Zusammenarbeit mit dem legendären Arrangeur, Produzenten und Komponisten Charles Stepney geprägt. Terry Callier hat auf diesem Album subtile und nuancierte Songs geschaffen, die mit ihrer stillen Intensität bestechen. Ein Klassiker, der in einer Reihe mit seinen Alben „What Color Is Love“ und „Occasional Rain“ steht.
Das Mailänder Duo The Ding Rooms hat sein inzwischen 12. Studioalbum veröffentlicht. Ihre Anfänge waren im Bereich der langsamen instrumentalen Beats, was vor Jahren als „Trip Hop“ bezeichnet wurde. Im Laufe der Zeit haben sie ihren Sound etwas variiert und sich einem songorentierten Ansatz zugewandt und auch Gast-Sänger*Innen eingeladen. Auf dem neuen Album „Lost In The Spinning Sound“ ist dies Chiara Castello, die auf acht der zehn Songs zu hören ist. Die Songs oszillieren zwischen cinematischen Sounds, Funk, Dub, Folk und Pop. Eine Mischung die ziemlich interessant klingt.
Last but not least ein Album auf das viele schon gewartet haben: „News From Planet Zombie“ das neue Album The Notwist, eine Band die mit ihrer Musik schon immer Genre-grenzen überschritten hat und dem entsprechend auch eine breite Fan-Base haben. Das neue Album ist das erste seit 1995 das die Band wieder mit erweiterter Live-Besetzung gemeinsam im Studio aufgenommen hat. Es ist ein Album, das eine unmittelbare warm-raue Energie ausstrahlt, mit Songs die den Blick auf die globalen Verwerfungen dieser Zeit richten ohne den humanistischen Kern der Band zu verlieren. This episode features a special musical lineup. Soul serves as the common thread that ties everything together. The spectrum ranges from classic soul, wonderful folk-soul hybrids, psychedelic soul, and cinematic soul all the way to innovative post-rock sounds.
The first album highlight is the first installment of the new compilation series “Hopes And Dreams,” released by Tramp Records. The compilation was curated by label head Tobias Kirmayer and presents rare and previously unreleased psychedelic soul treasures. The new series draws inspiration from the “Praise Poems” series released on the same label. The bar has been set high, and this collection of eleven obscure, rare, and above all outstanding songs fully lives up to it. There’s great, previously unheard music to discover here, and Tobias Kirmayer deserves congratulations on this exceptionally successful launch of the new series. Excellent—and therefore the Album of the Week!
The second album highlight comes from Jon Lucien. The album “In Search Of The Inner Self,” released on vinyl for the first time by the label Kent Records, contains recordings Jon Lucien made in 1969, but which, with the exception of the single “Search For The Inner Self,” were never released on vinyl. Jon Lucien had self-released the recordings in 1999 on a CD limited to 100 copies. The songs on the album are consistently great, and so it’s a real pleasure for me to have them on vinyl in my collection. The album can rightly be called an essential Jon Lucien album, standing alongside “must-have” classics like “Rashida” and “Mind’s Eye.” Great!
Inspired by this, I dug up another classic from my collection by Terry Callier. His 1973 album “I Just Can’t Help Myself” was his third and final release for the Cadet Records label. These three albums for Cadet Records were significantly shaped by his collaboration with the legendary arranger, producer, and composer Charles Stepney. On this album, Terry Callier created subtle and nuanced songs that captivate with their quiet intensity. A classic that stands alongside his albums “What Color Is Love” and “Occasional Rain.”
The Milan-based duo The Ding Rooms has released their 12th studio album. They started out in the realm of slow instrumental beats, what was called “trip hop” years ago. Over time, they’ve varied their sound somewhat, shifting toward a song-oriented approach and inviting guest vocalists. On the new album “Lost In The Spinning Sound,” that’s Chiara Castello, who can be heard on eight of the ten songs. The songs oscillate between cinematic sounds, funk, dub, folk, and pop—a mix that sounds quite interesting.
Last but not least, an album many have been waiting for: “News From Planet Zombie,” the new album by The Notwist, a band that has always crossed genre boundaries with their music and, as a result, has a broad fan base. The new album is the first since 1995 that the band has recorded together in the studio with an expanded live lineup. It’s an album that radiates an immediate, warm-raw energy, with songs that focus on the global upheavals of our time without losing the band’s humanistic core. Great! Enjoy listening to this episode!
