Zum Auftakt gibt es eine kleine Runde mit aktuellen und auch älteren Soul-Aufnahmen. Eine gute Einstimmung auf des erste Album-Highlight, das ich in dieser Episode vorstellen möchte. Das neue Album „Outsider“ von Tiwayo. Der in Paris geborene Sänger hat eine außergewöhnlich zeitlose Stimme, die für einen jungen Sänger schon ziemlich „alt“ klingt. Auf diese Weise kam er schon in jungen Jahren zu dem Spitznamen „The Young Old“, von dessen Initialen TYO er sein Pseudonym Tiwayo abgeleitet hatte. Für sein neues Album hat er sich mit Adrian Quesada von den Black Pumas zusammen getan. Diese Kollaberation hat sich als ein Glücksgriff erwiesen und das Album „Outsider“ überzeugt auf ganzer Linie mit wunderbarem Southern Soul, der vom Spirit der Labels Stax und Hi-Records inspiriert ist.
Das nächste Album-Highlight kommt von der britischen Band Mamas Gun. Das Album „Dig!“ ist bereits ihr sechstes und wurde von Neil Innes in den All Things Analogue Studios in Leeds aufgenommen. Beim Titel-Song „Dig!“ ist außerdem kein geringerer als Brian Jackson als Gastmusiker zu hören. Ein entspanntes Soul Album mit großartigen Arrangements, einem satten Sound und starken Songs.
Noch entspannter wird es dann bei Khrangbin, die letztes Jahr zum 10-jährigen Veröffentlichungs-Jubiläum ihres Debüt-Albums „The Universe Smiles Upon You“ dieses einfach noch einmal aufgenommen haben. Die neuen Versionen spiegeln die Erfahrungen der letzten 10 Jahre wieder und machen die Fans der Band glücklich. Tiefen-entspannt und einfach schön, was will man mehr?
Die bei Unique Records erscheinende Compilation-Reihe „This Is DJs Choice“ geht in die sechste Runde. Die neue Folge wurde von 2B Fuzzy und DJ Oonops kuratiert und bietet ein sehr abwechslungsreiches Programm, das durchweg tanzbar ist. In der Vinyl-Fassung hat jeder der beiden DJs eine Platten-Seite für seine Selektion, die zudem 10 der präsentierten Songs zum ersten mal auf Vinyl bringt. Die Compilation ist sehr schön geworden und hat insbesondere mit Jembaa Grooves Song „Mokele“ im Mo Horizons Remix einige Highlights am Start.
Danach geht es mit dem neuen Album von Nubiyan Twist weiter. Mit „Chasing Shadows“ versucht die Band einen Gegenentwurf zu unserer, in immer stärkeren Maße von Algorithmen bestimmten Welt zu schaffen. Er soll den Puls, die Wärme und die Spontaneität menschlicher Verbundenheit wiederbeleben. Dazu haben sie eine reichhaltige und unruhige Mischung aus Jazz, Afrobeat, HipHop und elektronischen Texturen geschaffen, die den Raum zwischen dem Organischen und dem Digitalen erkunden. Das Album wurde von Bandleader Tom Excel produziert und es sind auch eine Reihe namhafter Gast-Musiker und Sänger*Innen mit dabei. Ein ziemlich abwechslungsreiches und spannendes Album, das mir ausgesprochen gut gefällt!
Der finnische Musiker und Komponist Jimi Tenor feierte letztes Jahr seinen 60. Geburtstag und er beschenkte uns mit dem Album „Selenites, Selenites!“ von seiner neu gegründeten Jimi Tenor Band. Das Debüt finde ich ziemlich beeindruckend, denn hier nimmt uns eine Gruppe virtuoser Musiker mit auf eine Erkundungsreise durch die Welt des Afro-Jazz. Die absolute Spielfreude der Musiker ist aus jeder jeder Rille zu hören und formiert sich in einem rohen und unverfälschten Sound. Großartig!
Brian Jackson hat sich mit den Master At Work zusammen getan um legendäre Songs aus seiner Zeit mit dem unvergessenen Sänger Gil Scott-Heron neu aufzunehmen. Anfang März ist auf BBE eine zweite EP mit neuen Versionen aus dieser Zusammenarbeit erschienen. Die neuen Versionen finde ich großartig und Masters At Work haben hier als Produzenten sehr gute Arbeit geleistet. Diese beiden Doppel 12″-EPs sind auch Vorboten das für Mai angekündigte Album „Now More Than Ever“, auf das ich schon sehr gespannt bin.
Zum Abschluss gibt es dann noch einen Jazz-Funk Klassiker aus Japan. Der Gitarrist Ryo Kawasaki hat das Album „Juice“ im Jahr 1976 veröffentlicht und es schon mehrfach wiederveröffentlicht worden, zuletzt bei Mr.Bongo Records. Von diesem Album gibt es den Song „Bamboo Child“ zu hören, wunderbar entspannter Space-Funk vom Feinsten. Viel Spaß beim Anhören dieser Episode!

We’ll kick things off with a short set of both current and older soul tracks. It’s a great way to set the mood for the first album highlight I’d like to introduce in this episode: Tiwayo’s new album, *Outsider*. The Paris-born singer has an exceptionally timeless voice that sounds quite “old” for a young singer. This is how he earned the nickname “The Young Old” at a young age, and he derived his stage name Tiwayo from the initials TYO. For his new album, he teamed up with Adrian Quesada of the Black Pumas. This collaboration proved to be a stroke of luck, and the album “Outsider” delivers across the board with wonderful Southern soul inspired by the spirit of the Stax and Hi-Records labels.
The next album highlight comes from the British band Mamas Gun. The album “Dig!” is already their sixth and was recorded by Neil Innes at All Things Analogue Studios in Leeds. The title track “Dig!” also features none other than Brian Jackson as a guest musician. A laid-back soul album with great arrangements, a rich sound, and strong songs.
Things get even more laid-back with Khrangbin, who re-recorded their debut album “The Universe Smiles Upon You” last year to mark its 10th anniversary. The new versions reflect the experiences of the past 10 years and are sure to delight the band’s fans. Deeply relaxing and simply beautiful—what more could you want?
The “This Is DJs Choice” compilation series, released by Unique Records, is entering its sixth installment. The new edition was curated by 2B Fuzzy and DJ Oonops and offers a very diverse program that’s thoroughly danceable. On the vinyl edition, each of the two DJs has one side of the record for their selection, which also brings 10 of the featured songs to vinyl for the first time. The compilation has turned out beautifully and features several highlights, particularly Jembaa Groove’s song “Mokele” in the Mo Horizons remix.
Next up is the new album by Nubiyan Twist. With “Chasing Shadows,” the band attempts to create an alternative to our world, which is increasingly governed by algorithms. It aims to revive the pulse, warmth, and spontaneity of human connection. To this end, they’ve created a rich and restless blend of jazz, Afrobeat, hip-hop, and electronic textures that explore the space between the organic and the digital. The album was produced by bandleader Tom Excel and features a number of renowned guest musicians and singers. It’s a pretty diverse and exciting album that I really enjoy!
Finnish musician and composer Jimi Tenor celebrated his 60th birthday last year and gifted us with the album “Selenites, Selenites!” by his newly formed Jimi Tenor Band. I find this debut quite impressive, as a group of virtuoso musicians takes us on a journey of discovery through the world of Afro-jazz. The musicians’ sheer joy of playing is evident in every groove and coalesces into a raw and unadulterated sound. Fantastic!
Brian Jackson has teamed up with Masters At Work to re-record legendary songs from his time with the unforgettable singer Gil Scott-Heron. A second EP featuring new versions from this collaboration was released on BBE in early March. I think the new versions are fantastic, and Masters At Work have done a great job as producers here. These two double 12″ EPs also serve as a preview of the album “Now More Than Ever,” announced for May, which I’m already very excited about.
To wrap things up, here’s a jazz-funk classic from Japan. Guitarist Ryo Kawasaki released the album “Juice” in 1976, and it has been reissued several times, most recently by Mr. Bongo Records. From this album, we’ll be listening to the song “Bamboo Child”—wonderfully laid-back space-funk at its finest. Enjoy listening to this episode!
