Tropical Delights
Wir begeben uns auf eine musikalische Reise von Peru und den Anden im allgemeinen, mit Cumbia und artverwandten Rhythmen, über die Kapverdischen Inseln nach Sao Tomé und Prinzipe am Golf von Guinea und auf das Afrikanische Festland nach Bénin, Ghana und Togo, mit ihrer großen Vielfalt unterschiedlicher Rhythmen. Darüber hinaus gibt es auch neue Musik aus Frankreich, die von diesen afrikanischen und lateinamerikanischen Einflüssen inspiriert ist.
Zum Auftakt gibt es einige kleinere Mixsets mit Cumbia und artverwandtem, welche die Hörer*Innen aus dem Tübinger Raum auf die Wüste Welle Party „Beats Without Borders – Cumbia & Afrobeats“ am 25. April 2026 im Epplehaus Tübingen einstimmen soll.
Bei Analog Africa ist eine Compilation mit Stücken von Antoine Dougbé erschienen, die er mit dem legendären Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou aus Benin aufgenommen hatte. Um Antoine Dougbé ranken einige Mythen, denn er soll ein mächtiger Vodún-Eingeweihter gewesen sein. Das Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou ließ sich jedoch davon nicht abschrecken und hat es trotzdem gewagt mit ihm zusammen zu arbeiten. Er galt als einer der einfallsreichsten Songwriter in der Musikszene von Cotonou und da war die Zusammenarbeit mit dieser hochkarätigen Band ein perfekter Match. Die auf dem Album vertretenen Aufnahmen zeigen das Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou auf dem absoluten Höhepunkt seiner ohnehin beachtlichen Fähigkeiten. Ein großartiges Album mit Aufnahmen aus den Jahren 1977 bis 1982.
Von Benin geht es weiter nach Sao Tomé und Principe, zwei kleine Inseln am Golf von Guinea, die eine vielfältige und spannende Musikszene haben, die bislang auf der musikalischen Landkarte etwas übersehen wurde. Thomas Bignon aka DJ TOM B hat hervorragende Arbeit geleistet um dies zu ändern. Vor kurzem ist bei Les Disques Bongo Joe die zweite Folge der Compilation „Léve Léve“ erschienen, die von ihm kuratiert wurde. Auch die zweite Folge ist wieder absolut begeisternd und präsentiert zum einen erstklassige Songs von einigen Schlüsselbands der Inseln, sowie einige rare Songs, die nur schwer zu finden sind. Die Zusammenstellung ist gleichermaßen für interessierte Hörer*Innen wie auch für DJs interessant.
Zurück auf dem Festland des afrikanischen Kontinents machen wir einen kurzen Halt in Ghana. Die bei Soundway erschienen Compilation „Ghana Special: Highlife“ widmet sich diesem für Ghana prägenden Musikstil. Auf der Compilation finden sich eine Reihe spannender Aufnahmen, so zum Beispiel ein Song von der Band Asaase Ase. Highlife Legende Ebo Taylor hatte diese Band gegründet. Bei diesem Projekt spielte er ausschließlich mit Straßenjungen und keinen professionellen Musikern zusammen.
Die Musikszene der Kapverdischen Inseln finde ich schon seit langem sehr interessant. Das Label Analog Africa hatte 2016 die Compilation „Space Echo“ veröffentlicht, die einen sehr guten Einstieg in diese musikalische Welt bietet. Das Album schon schon seit einiger Zeit ausverkauft, doch nun hat es das Label neu aufgelegt. Ein willkommener Anlass nochmals ein paar Songs aus diesem großartigen Album zu spielen.
Danach geht es zurück nach Europa. In Frankreich gibt es eine wachsende Musikszene, die von karibischen, afrikanischen und lateinamerikanischen Rhythmen beeinflusst ist. Eine dieser Bands sind Ireke, die nun mit „Ayô Dle“ ihr zweites Album vorgelegt haben. Im Zentrum des Projekts stehen die Multi-Instrumentalisten und Beatmaker Julien Gervaix und Damien Tesson, deren gemeinsame Groove-Sprache Einflüsse aus Afrobeat, Dub, Funk, Soul, Roots Reggae und der elektronischen Musik zu einem warmen und organischen Sound fusioniert. Die Sängerinnen Agnés Helene und Nayel Hóxó geben der Band eine Stimme und bei einem Song ist Olivya von der Band Dowdelin zu Gast. Schon das erste Album von Ireke hat mich begeistert und beim neuen Album „Ayô Dele“ geht es mir nicht anders. Es ist großartig und die Platte der Woche!
Schon Ende letzten Jahres ist „Sumu“ erschienen, es ist das vierte Album der Band Tribeqa aus Nantes. Hier gibt es entspannten Afro-Soul mit Jazz- und HipHop Einflüssen zu hören, der mir auf der ganzen Linie gefällt. Sehr schön!
Zum Schluss gibt es noch eine neue Single von Amamere, einer Band aus Ghana, die mit „The’m Go Talk“ einen krönenden Abschluss für diese Episode setzten. Viel Spaß beim Anhören dieser Episode!

Tropical Delights
We embark on a musical journey from Peru and the Andes in general, with cumbia and related rhythms, through the Cape Verde Islands to São Tomé and Príncipe in the Gulf of Guinea, and on to the African mainland—to Benin, Ghana, and Togo—with its rich variety of rhythms. In addition, there is also new music from France inspired by these African and Latin American influences.
To kick things off, there are a few short mix sets featuring cumbia and related genres, designed to get listeners in the Tübingen area in the mood for the Wüste Welle party “Beats Without Borders – Cumbia & Afrobeats” on April 25, 2026, at the Epplehaus in Tübingen.
Analog Africa has released a compilation featuring tracks by Antoine Dougbé, which he recorded with the legendary Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou from Benin. Several myths surround Antoine Dougbé, as he is said to have been a powerful Vodún initiate. The Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, however, was not deterred by this and dared to work with him nonetheless. He was considered one of the most inventive songwriters on the Cotonou music scene, making the collaboration with this top-tier band a perfect match. The recordings featured on the album showcase the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou at the absolute peak of its already remarkable abilities. A magnificent album with recordings from 1977 to 1982.
From Benin, we move on to São Tomé and Príncipe, two small islands in the Gulf of Guinea that boast a diverse and exciting music scene which has been somewhat overlooked on the musical map until now. Thomas Bignon, aka DJ TOM B, has done an outstanding job of changing that. Les Disques Bongo Joe recently released the second installment of the “Léve Léve” compilation, which he curated. The second installment is once again absolutely thrilling, featuring top-notch songs from some of the islands’ key bands, as well as a few rare tracks that are hard to come by. The compilation is equally appealing to interested listeners and DJs alike.
Back on the African mainland, we make a brief stop in Ghana. The compilation “Ghana Special: Highlife,” released by Soundway, is dedicated to this defining musical style of Ghana. The compilation features a number of exciting recordings, such as a song by the band Asaase Ase. Highlife legend Ebo Taylor founded this band. For this project, he worked exclusively with street kids and no professional musicians.
I’ve long found the music scene of the Cape Verde Islands very interesting. In 2016, the label Analog Africa released the compilation “Space Echo,” which offers an excellent introduction to this musical world. The album has been sold out for some time, but the label has now reissued it. A welcome opportunity to play a few songs from this great album once again.
Then we head back to Europe. In France, there is a growing music scene influenced by Caribbean, African, and Latin American rhythms. One of these bands is Ireke, who have now released their second album, “Ayô Dle.” At the heart of the project are multi-instrumentalists and beatmakers Julien Gervaix and Damien Tesson, whose shared groove language fuses influences from Afrobeat, dub, funk, soul, roots reggae, and electronic music into a warm and organic sound. Singers Agnés Helene and Nayel Hóxó lend their voices to the band, and Olivya from the band Dowdelin makes a guest appearance on one track. I was already blown away by Ireke’s first album, and I feel the same way about their new album “Ayô Dele.” It’s fantastic and my record of the week!
“Sumu” was released at the end of last year; it’s the fourth album by the band Tribeqa from Nantes. It features laid-back Afro-soul with jazz and hip-hop influences, which I love from start to finish. Very nice!
Finally, there’s a new single from Amamere, a band from Ghana, whose track “The’m Go Talk” provides a fitting finale to this episode.
