Contemporary Jazz Update:
Letzte Woche, am 30. April, war der internationale Tag des Jazz. Ein willkommener Anlass wieder einmal eine Episode mit aktuellen Jazz Neuheiten vorzubereiten.
In den letzten Monaten gab es in der Tat einige sehr interessante Veröffentlichungen, die ich unbedingt vorstellen möchte. Die Bandbreite reicht von klassischen bis hin zu avantgardistischen Aufnahmen.
Das erste Album – Highlight kommt von Jerome Sabbagh. Sein aktuelles Album „Stand Up!“ ist bereits Ende 2025 erschienen. Ich habe den Saxophonisten mit seinem Quartet am 14. März im Pappelgarten in Reutlingen live erlebt. Es war ein beeindruckendes Konzert und viele Songs des neuen Albums hat die exzellent besetzte Band auch beim Konzert gespielt. Ein empfehlenswertes Album, das auch ohne die Erinnerung an dieses grandiose Konzert ein Genuss ist.
Auch der Trompeter Jeremy Pelt war schon mehrmals im Pappelgarten in Reutlingen zu Gast und seine Konzerte waren immer wieder großartig. Bis vor kurzem gab es allerdings seine Musik nur digital als CD oder im Stream. Nun ist erstmalig ein Vinyl-Album erschienen, das eine Auswahl an Stücken von drei bereits als CD veröffentlichten Alben enthält. Die Auswahl konzentriert sich auf sanfte Jazz Balladen, die sehr entspannt klingen. Ein wunderbares Album!
Jose James hat Live-Aufnahmen mit Songs von John Coltrane, die er neu interpretiert hat, auf dem digitalen Album „Facing East: The Music Of John Coltrane“ veröffentlicht. Die Aufnahmen sind bei einem Konzert am 23. September 2009 im Ancienne Belgique in Brüssel entstanden. Ich finde Jose James‘ Interpretationen ziemlich gut und es ist erfreulich, dass er diese Aufnahmen im Januar 2026 veröffentlicht hat. Das Album gibt es auf seiner Bandcamp-Seite als freien Download.
Der Pianist Florian Pellissier ist in zahlreichen Bands und Formationen aktiv. Cotonete, Setenta und natürlich das Florian Pellissier Quintet dürften dabei die bekanntesten sein. Mit letzterem hat Florian Pellissier vor ein paar Monaten das neue Album „Pacifique Biches“ veröffentlicht. Das Album besticht mit virtuoser Musikalität, die zugleich abwechslungsreich und auch entspannend ist. Ein großartiges Album!
Die Band „Work Money Death“ widmet sich dem Spiritual Jazz und ist von Pharoah Sanders und Alice Coltrane beeinflusst. Zugleich verarbeitet die Band den Tod des befreundeten Gitarristen Chris „Earl“ Dawkins, dem auch ein Song auf dem Album gewidmet ist. Die 4 Songs sind allesamt sehr ausgedehnte Jams, die jeweils eine Plattenseite einnehmen. Die Band nimmt die Hörer*Innen auf dem Album „A Portal To Here“ mit auf eine gemeinsame Reise durch Trauer und Besinnung mit großer emotionaler Intensität.
Mit Andrei Nikolsky gibt es einen musikalischen Richtungswechsel. Er ist musikalisch stark von Soundtracks und Library Music der 1960er Jahre beeinflusst. Mit dem Album „Music For Terminals“ hat er ein schönes Werk geschaffen, das zudem von Flughafen Terminals inspiriert ist. Die Songs changieren zwischen modalem Jazz, ausgefallener Elektronik und schrägen Disco-Sounds. Da sollte für jeden etwas dabei sein und Spaß macht dies allemal!
Das Album der Woche kommt von Flea, der vor allem als Bassist der Red Hot Chili Peppers bekannt ist. Doch sein Solo-Album „Honora“ ist ganz anders als man es mit dieser Vita erwarten würde. Es ist ein ganz großartiges und innovatives Jazzalbum! Einige Musiker aus dem Umfeld vom International Anthem Label sind dabei, so zum Beispiel Jeff Parker, Anna Butters und Josh Johnson. Auch namhafte Musiker aus anderen Genres wie Thom Yorke und Nick Cave sind dabei. Letzterer veredelt mit seinem Gesang die großartige Version die Flea von „Wichita Lineman“ aufgenommen hat. Das Album ist voll von großartigen Songs, sowohl Eigenkompositionen als auch mit Bedacht ausgewählte Coverversionen. Grandios, ich bin absolut begeistert!
Den krönenden Abschluss macht Gregory Uhlmann mit seinem wunderbaren Album „Extra Stars“, das bei International Anthem erschienen ist. Der Gitarrist ist ja unter anderem bei Gründungsmitglied des auch von mir gefeierten Trance-Jazz-Quintets SML. Schon daher hat mich das Solo-Werk von ihm interessiert und es hat mich sofort überzeugt. Auch hier gibt es innovative und ausgefallene Sounds zu hören und einige seiner Musiker-Kollegen aus dem Umfeld des Labels International Anthem sind mit von der Partie. Contemporary Jazz Update:
Last week, on April 30, was International Jazz Day. A welcome opportunity to put together another episode featuring the latest in jazz.
In recent months, there have indeed been some very interesting releases that I’d love to share with you. The range spans from classic to avant-garde recordings.
The first album highlight comes from Jerome Sabbagh. His latest album, “Stand Up!,” was released at the end of 2025. I saw the saxophonist perform live with his quartet on March 14 at the Pappelgarten in Reutlingen. It was an impressive concert, and the band—featuring an excellent lineup—also played many songs from the new album during the show. A highly recommended album that is a delight even without the memory of that magnificent concert.
Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt has also been a guest at the Pappelgarten in Reutlingen several times, and his concerts have always been fantastic. Until recently, however, his music was only available digitally on CD or via streaming. Now, for the first time, a vinyl album has been released featuring a selection of tracks from three albums previously released on CD. The selection focuses on gentle jazz ballads that sound very relaxing. A wonderful album!
Jose James has released live recordings of songs by John Coltrane, which he has reinterpreted, on the digital album “Facing East: The Music Of John Coltrane.” The recordings were made during a concert on September 23, 2009, at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. I think Jose James’ interpretations are quite good, and it’s great that he released these recordings in January 2026. The album is available as a free download on his Bandcamp page.
Pianist Florian Pellissier is active in numerous bands and ensembles. Cotonete, Setenta, and of course the Florian Pellissier Quintet are likely the best known among them. With the latter, Florian Pellissier released the new album “Pacifique Biches” a few months ago. The album captivates with virtuosic musicality that is both varied and relaxing. A great album!
The band “Work Money Death” is dedicated to spiritual jazz and is influenced by Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane. At the same time, the band processes the death of their friend, guitarist Chris “Earl” Dawkins, to whom a song on the album is dedicated. The four songs are all very extended jams, each taking up an entire side of the record. On the album “A Portal To Here,” the band takes listeners on a shared journey through grief and reflection with great emotional intensity.
With Andrei Nikolsky, there’s a shift in musical direction. He is heavily influenced musically by soundtracks and library music from the 1960s. With the album “Music For Terminals,” he has created a beautiful work that is also inspired by airport terminals. The songs oscillate between modal jazz, unconventional electronica, and quirky disco sounds. There should be something for everyone here, and it’s definitely a lot of fun!
The Album of the Week comes from Flea, who is best known as the bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But his solo album “Honora” is quite different from what one might expect given his background. It’s a truly magnificent and innovative jazz album! It features several musicians from the International Anthem label’s circle, such as Jeff Parker, Anna Butters, and Josh Johnson. Renowned musicians from other genres, like Thom Yorke and Nick Cave, also appear. The latter enhances Flea’s magnificent cover of “Wichita Lineman” with his vocals. The album is full of great songs, including both original compositions and carefully selected cover versions. Magnificent—I’m absolutely thrilled!
The grand finale comes from Gregory Uhlmann with his wonderful album “Extra Stars,” released on International Anthem. The guitarist is, among other things, a founding member of the trance-jazz quintet SML, which I also admire. That alone made me interested in his solo work, and it won me over immediately. Here, too, there are innovative and unusual sounds to be heard, and some of his fellow musicians from the International Anthem label scene are also on board. Enjoy listening to this episode!
