Reggae got Soul & Dub.
Soul und Reggae, das passt gut zusammen und wenn Musik mit Dub-Techniken veredelt wird, entstehen spannende Sounds.
Zum Auftakt gibt es eine kleine Runde mit Reggae-Soul Stücken, die von den 60er Jahren bis in die aktuelle Zeit reichen. Erstes Album Highlight ist die Compilation „Soul Jamaica“, die eine großartige Auswahl an Reggae-Soul und -Funk Stücken aus dem Repertoire von Studio One Records und dessen Sub-Label Bamboo Records bietet. Hier wird schnell klar, dass Reggae und Soul hervorragend zusammen passen. Exzellent!
Die italienische Band The Appetizers widmen sich diesem Sound aus den späten 1960er und frühen 1970er Jahren mit großem Respeḱt und Hingabe. Nun haben sie ihr zweites Album „Keep Your Step“ beim Label Killer Groove Records veröffentlicht. Das Album besticht mit guten Songs, die sich fließend zwischen entspannt swingenden Grooves und mitreißenden, hypnotischen Rhythmen bewegen. Musik die sowohl für die Tanzfläche als auch für die Seele gemacht ist. Sehr schön!
Im Nigeria der späten 1980er Jahre hat sich jamaikanischer Reggae mit nigerianischen Stilen vermischt und so entstand eine musikalische Brücke zwischen Lagos und Kingston. Die Compilation „Fight The Fire“ versammelt 14 digitale Reggae-, Deep-Roots und Dub-Raritäten, die in den Jahren 1986 bis 1991 in Nigeria entstanden sind. Eine außerordentlich interessande Compilation, die Einblick in eine ganz besondere Nische der nigerianischen Underground Szene bietet.
Vor rund 20 Jahren erschien das Album „A Space Outta Sound“ von Nightmares On Wax. Aus diesem Anlass hat George Evelyn acht Songs dieses Albums von Adrian Sherwood remixen lassen. Der Gründer des legendären Labels On-U-Sound hat einen exzellenten Ruf als charismatischer Mix-Zauberer, der mit allen Tricks des Dub-Mixes vertraut ist. Außerdem hat er einige der wichtigsten On-U-Sound Musiker hinzugezogen, um das Ausgangsmaterial mit zusätzlicher Instrumentierung zu weiterzuentwickeln. So wurde „In A Space Outta Dub“ mehr als nur ein reines Remix-Album. Es ist eine hochspannende Dub-Mix-Exkursion, die Spaß macht. Die Platte der Woche!
In diesem Zusammenhang finde ich es auch sehr interessant, wieder einmal die Dub-Mix-Versionen der beiden Massive Attack Alben anzuhören, die Mad Professor angefertigt hat. Die sind inzwischen ebenfalls legendär. Viel Vergnügen beim Anhören dieser Episode.

Reggae Got Soul & Dub
Soul and reggae go well together, and when music is enhanced with dub techniques, exciting sounds emerge.
To kick things off, here’s a short selection of reggae-soul tracks spanning from the 1960s to the present day. The first album highlight is the compilation “Soul Jamaica,” which offers a fantastic selection of reggae-soul and funk tracks from the repertoire of Studio One Records and its sub-label Bamboo Records. It quickly becomes clear that reggae and soul are a perfect match. Excellent!
The Italian band The Appetizers approach this sound from the late 1960s and early 1970s with great respect and dedication. They have now released their second album, “Keep Your Step,” on the Killer Groove Records label. The album captivates with great songs that flow seamlessly between laid-back, swinging grooves and rousing, hypnotic rhythms. Music made for both the dance floor and the soul. Very nice!
In Nigeria in the late 1980s, Jamaican reggae blended with Nigerian styles, creating a musical bridge between Lagos and Kingston. The compilation “Fight The Fire” brings together 14 digital reggae, deep roots, and dub rarities recorded in Nigeria between 1986 and 1991. An extraordinarily interesting compilation that offers insight into a very special niche of the Nigerian underground scene.

As a result, “In A Space Outta Dub” became more than just a simple remix album. It’s a thrilling dub-mix excursion that’s a lot of fun. The record of the week!
In this context, I also find it very interesting to listen once again to the dub-mix versions of the two Massive Attack albums produced by Mad Professor. Those have also become legendary in the meantime. Enjoy listening to this episode.
