Different Colours of Soul
Diese Episode präsentiert euch wieder eine große Bandbreite verschiedener Klangfarben aus der bunten Welt der Soul Musik. Zum Auftakt gibt es cinematische Sounds und Library Music.
Die erste Album Vorstellung kommt von der Barigozzi Group aus Mailand. Deren Album „Woman’s Colours“ aus dem Jahr 1974 wurde aktuell von Four Flies wiederveröffentlicht. Ein ikonisches Library Music Album, das eine raffinierte Hommage an die weibliche Formist, wobei jeder Titel eine bestimmte Farbe mit einem anderen Körperteil assoziiert.
Hier verflechten sich Jazz-Funk und Jazz-Rock mit Anklängen von Afro-Rhytmen, Exotica und Bossa Nova. Ein reichhaltiges und vielschichtiges Klanguniversum. Klasse!
Parlor Greens sind fast schon eine Art Hammond-Organ Funk Supergroup. Alle Mitglieder dieses Trios haben sich schon bei verscheiden anderen namhaften Bands des Genres einen Namen gemacht. Mit ihrem zweiten Album „Emeralds“ hat die Band ein überzeugendes Werk geschaffen, dem man sofort anhört, dass die Musiker tourerprobt und bestens aufeinander eingespielt sind. Die Songs loten gekonnt die Variationsmöglichkeiten eines rein instrumentalen Hammond-Organ Funk-Trios aus und zeigen eindrucksvoll wie spannend das sein kann!
Beim nächsten Album steht ebenfalls die Hammond-Orgel im Mittelpunkt. Doch bei Chris Bangs und Mick Talbots neuem Werk „Smokin’ Aces“ geht es zum Teil in eine andere Richtung und die Instrumentierung ist wesentlich reichhaltiger. Hier gibt es neben Acid-Jazz Instrumentals auch zeitgenössische Soul-Songs mit Vocals von verschiedenen Sänger*Innen. Eine sehr gefällige Mischung!
Auf das zweite Album von Jalen Ngonda habe ich schon mit großer Spannung gewartet. Mit „Doctrine Of Love“ hat er die hohen Erwartungen noch etwas übertroffen. Ein großartiges, üppig mit Streichern, Bläsern und Gospel-Backing-Chören arrangiertes Album. Analoger Sound, der von den großen Soul-Aufnahmen der späten 1960er Jahren inspiriert ist und dennoch nicht retro klingt. So klingt aktueller Soul am besten. „Doctrine Of Love“ ist die Platte der Woche!
Die Geschichte von E.J. & The Echoes ist ein bemerkenswertes Kapitel der Musikgeschichte Michigans. Zwischen 1964 und 1967 veröffentlichte die Band sieben Singles, die inzwischen zum Teil sehr rar und gesucht sind. Einige der Songs waren insbesondere in der britischen Northern Soul Szene begehrt. Nun hat Tramp Records diese Songs erstmals auf einer Compilation zusammengefasst und auf LP veröffentlicht. „The Complete Diamond Jim Recordings“ ist ein tolles Album mit großartigen Songs!
Zum Abschluss möchte ich wieder einmal einige bemerkenswerte Veröffentlichungen des Labels Soul 4 Real vorstellen. In der „Reserva Especial“ Reihe sind zwei weitere 7“ Eps erschienen, die Aufnahmen von Stax & Volt und Malaco Records präsentieren, die bislang noch nie auf 7“ veröffentlicht wurden. Beide EPs sind exzellent und bieten wunderbaren Southern Soul. Dazu passen noch die beiden Singles von Homer Banks und Dan Penn, die ebenfalls auf diesem Label erschienen sind, mit bislang unveröffentlichten Songs.

Different Colours of Soul
This episode once again presents a wide range of different sounds from the colorful world of soul music. We kick things off with cinematic sounds and library music.
The first album spotlight comes from the Barigozzi Group from Milan. Their 1974 album “Woman’s Colours” has recently been reissued by Four Flies. An iconic library music album that pays a sophisticated homage to the female form, with each track associating a specific color with a different part of the body.
Here, jazz-funk and jazz-rock intertwine with echoes of Afro rhythms, exotica, and bossa nova. A rich and multi-layered sonic universe. Great!
Parlor Greens are almost a kind of Hammond organ funk supergroup. All members of this trio have already made a name for themselves in various other well-known bands of the genre. With their second album, “Emeralds,” the band has created a compelling work that immediately reveals that the musicians are seasoned tourers and perfectly in sync with one another. The songs skillfully explore the range of possibilities for a purely instrumental Hammond organ funk trio and impressively demonstrate just how exciting that can be!
The Hammond organ is also at the center of the next album. But Chris Bangs and Mick Talbot’s new work, “Smokin’ Aces,” takes a slightly different direction in parts, and the instrumentation is much richer. Here, alongside acid jazz instrumentals, there are also contemporary soul songs featuring vocals by various singers. A very pleasing mix!
I’ve been eagerly awaiting Jalen Ngonda’s second album. With “Doctrine Of Love,” he’s actually exceeded the high expectations. A magnificent album, lavishly arranged with strings, horns, and gospel backing choirs. An analog sound inspired by the great soul recordings of the late 1960s, yet it doesn’t sound retro. This is how contemporary soul sounds best. “Doctrine Of Love” is the record of the week!
The story of E.J. & The Echoes is a remarkable chapter in Michigan’s music history. Between 1964 and 1967, the band released seven singles, some of which have since become very rare and sought-after. Some of the songs were particularly sought after in the British Northern Soul scene. Now Tramp Records has compiled these songs for the first time on a compilation and released them on LP. “The Complete Diamond Jim Recordings” is a great album with fantastic songs!
To wrap things up, I’d like to highlight a few notable releases from the Soul 4 Real label once again. Two more 7“ EPs have been released in the ”Reserva Especial“ series, featuring recordings from Stax & Volt and Malaco Records that have never before been released on 7”. Both EPs are excellent and offer wonderful Southern soul. They are complemented by the two singles by Homer Banks and Dan Penn, also released on this label, featuring previously unreleased songs.
