A Contemporary Jazz Update:
Es ist wieder einmal Zeit den Fokus auf die neusten Entwicklungen in der aktuellen Jazz Szene zu richten. Es gibt einige interessante Veröffentlichungen vorzustellen, die zudem auch eine große Bandbreite unterschiedlicher musikalischer Ansätze bieten.
Doch zuerst gedenken wir dem großartigen Jazz-Pianisten Abdullah Ibrahim, der am 15. Juni im Alter von 91 Jahren gestorben ist. Der aus Südafrika stammende Pianist vermischte in seinen Kompositionen Jazz mit afrikanischen Stilen und hinterlässt damit ein beeindruckendes musikalisches Werk.
Danach richtet sich der Fokus auf aktuelle Veröffentlichungen. Das erste Highlight kommt von Malcolm Strachan, der mit „Look On The Bright Side“ sein drittes Solo-Album veröffentlicht hat. Es ist ein stilistisch vielfältiges und abwechslungsreiches Werk, Jazz der tief in einem tanzbaren Groove verwurzelt ist. Die Songs haben einen warmen Sound und sind von einer optimistischen Stimmung geprägt. Ein sehr schönes Album, das ich für sein bisher bestes halte.
Mit Ori Kaplan & Lihu Melamed geht es musikalisch in eine etwas andere Richtung. Ihr Album „Reverie“ ist von einem eher cinematischen Sound geprägt und integriert ganz unterschiedliche Einflüsse aus Jazz, Folk, Rock und nahöstlichen Klangtexturen. Die Musik die Ori Kaplan & Lihu Melamed auf ihrem Debüt-Album geschaffen haben ist der perfekte Soundtrack für einen mediterranen Sommerabend.
Das neue Album „Mana“ der Posaunistin Kalia Vandever entführt uns in neue musikalische Gefilde. Die Musik von Kalia Vandever ist schwer einzuordnen. Es ist wirklich sehr interessant was sie mit ihrer außergewöhnlichen Instrumentierung geschaffen hat: Solo-Posaune, die durch ein fein abgestimmtes Pedalboard gefiltert und zugleich live manipuliert wird. Dies wird zudem noch mit sparsam eingesetztem Klavier gepaart und verschmilzt zu einem einzigartigen, weitläufigen und träumerischen Sound.
Die Saxophonistin und Komponistin Jasmine Myra ist mit ihrem neuen Album „Where Light Settles“ dabei und es glänzt mit wunderschönen Songs, die mit einer großen Band, inklusive Streicher-Sektion eingespielt wurden. Eine Musik von sanfter Schönheit. Wunderbar!
Der Gitarrist Jeff Parker hat mich in den letzten Jahren mit seinen Veröffentlichungen in zunehmenden Maß begeistert. Sein neues Album „Happy Today“, das er live mit dem ETA IVtet aufgenommen hat, ist ebenfalls wieder ein echtes Highlight. Es ist eine wahre Freude der Band bei ihren improvisatorischen Exkursionen auf beiden jeweils über 20 Minuten langen Songs des Albums zuzuhören. Hier hört man die charakteristische Klangsprache des IVtet, die auf langatmigen, minimalistischen Improvisationen basiert, die sich selbstbewusst in einen größeren Raum ausdehnt und beim Publikum denselben hypnotisierenden, tiefgreifenden Höreffekt erzeugt. Grandios, die Platte der Woche!
Zum Schluss gibt es neues vom Clear Path Ensemble, dem Projekt von Cory Champion, der das neue Album „Ascending“ fast ausschließlich alleine eingespielt hat. Die Musik nimmt die Hörer mit auf eine minimalistische Klangreise mit Vibraphon, Xylophon, Marimba, Glockenspiel, Percussion und Piano. Sehr schön! Viel Vergnügen beim Anhören dieser Episode!

An Overview of Contemporary Jazz:
Once again, it’s time to turn our attention to the latest developments in the current jazz scene. There are several interesting releases to highlight, which also offer a wide range of different musical approaches.
But first, let’s pay tribute to the great jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, who passed away on June 15 at the age of 91. The South African-born pianist blended jazz with African styles in his compositions, leaving behind an impressive musical legacy.
Next, we’ll turn our attention to recent releases. The first highlight comes from Malcolm Strachan, who has released his third solo album, “Look On The Bright Side.” It is a stylistically diverse and varied work—jazz deeply rooted in a danceable groove. The songs have a warm sound and are characterized by an optimistic mood. A very beautiful album, which I consider his best to date.
With Ori Kaplan & Lihu Melamed, the music takes a slightly different direction. Their album “Reverie” is characterized by a rather cinematic sound and integrates very diverse influences from jazz, folk, rock, and Middle Eastern textures. The music that Ori Kaplan & Lihu Melamed have created on their debut album is the perfect soundtrack for a Mediterranean summer evening.
Trombonist Kalia Vandever’s new album “Mana” takes us to new musical realms. Kalia Vandever’s music is difficult to categorize. It’s truly fascinating what she has created with her extraordinary instrumentation: a solo trombone filtered through a finely tuned pedalboard and manipulated live at the same time. This is further paired with sparing use of piano, blending into a unique, expansive, and dreamy sound.
Saxophonist and composer Jasmine Myra is here with her new album “Where Light Settles,” which shines with beautiful songs recorded with a full band, including a string section. Music of gentle beauty. Wonderful!
Guitarist Jeff Parker has increasingly impressed me with his releases over the past few years. His new album “Happy Today,” which he recorded live with the ETA IVtet, is once again a real highlight. It’s a true joy to listen to the band’s improvisational excursions on the album’s two tracks, each over 20 minutes long. Here you can hear the IVtet’s characteristic sound, based on expansive, minimalist improvisations that confidently expand into a larger space and create the same hypnotic, profound listening experience for the audience. Finally, we have news from the Clear Path Ensemble, the project by Cory Champion, who recorded the new album “Ascending” almost entirely on his own.
