Ein souliger Soundclash: Eine Reise, die von Soul über Reggae und Funk bis hin zu Krautrock und darüber hinaus geht. Zum Auftakt gibt es eine ausgedehnte Runde mit Soul-Klassikern und aktuellen Aufnahmen. Danach ist es Zeit für das Album der Woche:
Joey Quinones, der Sänger bei Thee Sinseers ist, hat mit „Inna Soul Steady Situation“ sein erstes Solo-Album veröffentlicht. Hier kommen alle Einflüsse zusammen, die Joey Quinones musikalische Entwicklung geprägt haben. Vom Chicano-Soul über die Lehrjahre im Rocksteady und Roots-Reggae bis hin zum üppig orchestrierten Harmonie-Soul, für den Thee Sinseers bekannt sind. Die daraus entstandene Stilmischung kommt schon im Titelstück „Inna Soul Steady Situation“ zum Ausdruck, mit dem das Album eröffnet wird und das zugleich die Richtung vorgibt. Ein Album das vom ersten bis zum letzten Stück überzeugt und vor allem auch Spaß macht. Großartig!
Danach geht es mit einer kleinen Reggae Runde weiter, bis wir schließlich beim neuen Album von Karl Hector & The Malcouns landen. Auf „Yolek“ entwirft die Band um Karl Hector (aka JJ Whitefield) und Zdenko Curulija ihre musikalische Vision, die sie gerne als Kraut-Funk bezeichnen. Inspiriert von Protagonisten der experimentellen deutschen Musikszene der 1970er Jahre, Bands wie Amon Düül, Popul Vuh und vor allem auch Embryo, taucht die Band tief in die Geschichte des Krautrock ein. „Yolek“ ist eine zeitgemäße Interpretation von Krautrock, die ziemlich funky ist und zudem eine entspannte, psychedelische Atmosphäre hat, die mir ausgesprochen gut gefällt.
Die Ende 2024 bei Funk Night Records erschienene Compilation „Krautrock“ passt dazu ebenfalls ganz gut. Dabei handelt es sich nicht um wieder-veröffentlichte Aufnahmen, es ist eher eine Art Konzeptalbum, zu dem sich einige Musiker zusammen gefunden haben, die hier jeweils vier oder sechs Songs beigetragen haben. Jede Band hat ihre eigene Interpretation von Krautrock, die zusammen in einem abwechslungsreichen und spannenden Album resultieren, das zudem wie ein Library-Music Album angelegt ist, mit Beschreibung der Song-Charakteristik und Tonlage. Sehr schön!
JJ Whitefield ist noch mit einem weiteren neuen Album vertreten. „Exotic Meditation / Sloppy Souls“ ist bereits Anfang März erschienen. JJ Whitefield setzt hier seine jüngste Auseinandersetzung mit dem Library-Funk-Sound fort und zwar auf fantastische Weise, die uns zwei unterschiedliche Stile beschert. Seite eins heißt „Exotic Meditations“ – Tracks, die kernige Funk-Rhythmen mit exotischeren Einflüssen verbinden, etwas Ethio-Jazz, Elemente aus dem Nahen Osten und andere coole Elemente, was insgesamt für sehr groovige Sounds sorgt. Seite zwei heißt „Sloppy Souls“ – Stücke mit einer schönen, gemächlichen Funk-Atmosphäre, fast schon im Late-Night-Stil, aber dennoch mit einem angenehmen Knacken im Hintergrund und einem Ansatz, bei dem JJ Whitefield definitiv mit weniger viel mehr erreicht!

A soulful soundclash: A journey that takes you from soul through reggae and funk to Krautrock and beyond.
We’ll kick things off with an extended set of soul classics and current tracks. Then it’s time for the Album of the Week:
Joey Quinones, the lead singer of Thee Sinseers, has released his first solo album, *Inna Soul Steady Situation*. Here, all the influences that have shaped Joey Quinones’ musical development come together. From Chicano soul through his formative years in rocksteady and roots reggae to the richly orchestrated harmony soul for which Thee Sinseers are known. The resulting blend of styles is already evident in the title track “Inna Soul Steady Situation,” which opens the album and sets the tone. An album that’s compelling from the first track to the last—and, above all, a lot of fun. Great!
Next up is a brief foray into reggae, until we finally arrive at the new album by Karl Hector & The Malcouns. On “Yolek,” the band led by Karl Hector (aka JJ Whitefield) and Zdenko Curulija unfolds its musical vision, which they like to call “Kraut-Funk.” Inspired by key figures of the experimental German music scene of the 1970s—bands like Amon Düül, Popul Vuh, and especially Embryo—the band delves deep into the history of Krautrock. “Yolek” is a contemporary interpretation of Krautrock that’s pretty funky and also has a laid-back, psychedelic atmosphere that I really enjoy.
The compilation “Krautrock,” released in late 2024 on Funk Night Records, also fits in quite well here. These aren’t re-released recordings; rather, it’s a kind of concept album for which several musicians came together, each contributing four or six songs. Each band has its own take on Krautrock, which together result in a varied and exciting album that’s also structured like a library music album, complete with descriptions of the songs’ characteristics and key signatures. Very nice!
JJ Whitefield is also featured with another new album. “Exotic Meditation / Sloppy Souls” was released in early March. Here, JJ Whitefield continues his recent exploration of the library funk sound in a fantastic way that treats us to two distinct styles. Side one is titled “Exotic Meditations”—tracks that blend robust funk rhythms with more exotic influences, a touch of Ethio-jazz, elements from the Middle East, and other cool touches, resulting in some seriously groovy sounds. Side two is titled “Sloppy Souls”—tracks with a lovely, laid-back funk vibe, almost late-night in style, yet still featuring a pleasant crackle in the background and an approach where JJ Whitefield definitely achieves so much more with so little!
