Let’s Groove!
Diese Episode ist eine Entdeckungsreise durch die Welt des Grooves. Soul ist natürlich immer in einer gewissen Form dabei. Diese Reise führt uns in ganz unterschiedliche Ecken der Welt und zu verschiedenen Arten von Grooves. Zum Auftakt gibt es eine Runde mit australischen Bands, die einen ganz besonderen Instrumental-Funk entwickelt haben, der sowohl cinematische als auch psychedelische Elemente vereint. Danach geht mit artverwandten Sounds weiter, die jedoch wieder andere Einflüsse verarbeitet haben.
Das erste Album-Highlight passt da ebenfalls sehr gut dazu. Es ist das selbst-betitelte Debüt-Album des italienischen Trios Atabasca, das Ende März bei Killer Groove Records erschienen ist. Die Inspirationen der Band reichen von Jazz-Funk, Weltmusik, Afrobeat und Psychedelia bis hin zu italienischen Soundtrack-Traditionen. Atabasca führen uns auf eine klangliche Entdeckungsreise, auf der Funk, Psychedelia und Desert-Grooves aufeinandertreffen und das Trio kreiert Instrumentalstücke, die sich zugleich vertraut und experimentell anfühlen. Ihr Debütalbum glänzt mit einer analog-warmen Produktion, die auf globale rhythmische Einflüsse trifft. Ein sehr gut gelungenes Album!
Das zweite Album-Highlight dieser Episode führt uns musikalisch nach Ägypten. Auf der Compilation „Ayam El Disco“ hören wir eine neue Auswahl ägyptischer Disco- und Boogie-Kassetten-Tracks aus den 1980er Jahren, kuratiert vom ägyptischen DJ Disco Arabesquo, der damit an sein hochgelobtes Album „Sharayet El Disco“ anknüpft. Der in Amsterdam lebende ägyptische DJ hat jahrelang seltene Kassetten aus den 1980er- und frühen 1990er-Jahren gesammelt, einer Zeit welche die Musiklandschaft Ägyptens veränderte und sein eigenes Hörerlebnis prägte. In dieser Zeit hatten sich Kassetten als Medium durchgesetzt und dies ermöglichte Künstlern, unabhängig zu arbeiten und gleichzeitig globale Einflüsse wie Disco, Funk und Synth-Pop aufzunehmen. Anstatt die westliche Clubkultur zu kopieren, wurden diese Klänge an den lokalen Kontext angepasst. „Ayam El Disco“ spiegelt diese Ära durch eine sorgfältig zusammengestellte Auswahl wider, die von sanftem Disco und Boogie bis hin zu funkigeren Instrumentalstücken reicht. Auf dieser Compilation gibt es ziemlich interessante Musik zu entdecken, die nun erstmals auf Vinyl veröffentlicht wurde.
Das Album der Woche kommt von Nu Genea, die mit „People Of The Moon“ ihr viertes Album veröffentlicht haben. Die von Lucio Aquilina und Massimo Di Lena gegründete Gruppe veröffentlichte zwischen 2014 und Mitte 2021 unter dem Namen Nu Guinea und nannte sich dann in Nu Genea um. Das musikalische Konzept von Nu Genea basiert auf der Vermischung von Stilen und Klängen, die den Golf von Neapel berührt haben. Die Umsetzung dieses Konzepts konnte man bereits in Perfektion auf dem Album „Bar Mediterraneo“ hören, das 2022 erschienen ist und damals eins meiner Lieblingsalben war. Die Messlatte für das neue Album war also ziemlich hoch. Die vorab bereits letztes Jahr ausgekoppelte Single „Scalla“ war exzellent und auch in meiner Top10 der besten Singles 2025 platziert. Nun liegt das komplette Album vor und es gibt noch viel mehr gute Songs darauf zu hören. Nach dem ersten Eindruck war ich sofort begeistert und das „People Of The Moon“ läuft seither in Heavy Rotation. Ob es in der Langzeitwirkung so gut wie „Bar Mediterraneo“ sein wird, muss sich noch erweisen. Doch soviel lässt sich jetzt schon sagen: Es ist das Album der Woche!

Let’s Groove!
This episode is a journey of discovery through the world of groove. Of course, soul is always part of it in one form or another. This journey takes us to very different corners of the world and introduces us to various types of grooves. We’ll kick things off with a roundup of Australian bands that have developed a very special kind of instrumental funk, blending both cinematic and psychedelic elements. Then we’ll move on to similar sounds that draw on yet other influences.
The first album highlight fits right in with this theme. It’s the self-titled debut album by the Italian trio Atabasca, released in late March on Killer Groove Records. The band’s inspirations range from jazz-funk, world music, Afrobeat, and psychedelia to Italian soundtrack traditions. Atabasca takes us on a sonic journey of discovery where funk, psychedelia, and desert grooves collide, and the trio creates instrumental pieces that feel both familiar and experimental. Their debut album shines with a warm, analog production that blends with global rhythmic influences. A very well-crafted album!
The second album highlight of this episode takes us on a musical journey to Egypt. On the compilation “Ayam El Disco,” we hear a new selection of Egyptian disco and boogie cassette tracks from the 1980s, curated by Egyptian DJ Disco Arabesquo, who follows up on his highly acclaimed album “Sharayet El Disco.” The Amsterdam-based Egyptian DJ has spent years collecting rare cassettes from the 1980s and early 1990s—a period that transformed Egypt’s music scene and shaped his own listening experience. During this period, cassettes had established themselves as the dominant medium, enabling artists to work independently while incorporating global influences such as disco, funk, and synth-pop. Rather than copying Western club culture, these sounds were adapted to the local context. “Ayam El Disco” reflects this era through a carefully curated selection ranging from smooth disco and boogie to funkier instrumental tracks. There’s some truly interesting music to discover on this compilation, which has now been released on vinyl for the first time.
The Album of the Week comes from Nu Genea, who have released their fourth album, “People Of The Moon.” Founded by Lucio Aquilina and Massimo Di Lena, the group released music under the name Nu Guinea between 2014 and mid-2021 before renaming themselves Nu Genea. Nu Genea’s musical concept is based on blending styles and sounds that have influenced the Gulf of Naples. This concept was already executed to perfection on the album “Bar Mediterraneo,” which was released in 2022 and was one of my favorite albums at the time. So the bar was set pretty high for the new album. The single “Scalla,” released as a preview last year, was excellent and also made it into my Top 10 best singles of 2025. Now the full album is out, and there are many more great songs to discover on it. My first impression left me immediately thrilled, and “People Of The Moon” has been on heavy rotation ever since. Whether it will stand the test of time as well as “Bar Mediterraneo” remains to be seen. But one thing is already clear: It’s the Album of the Week!
