Different Colours Of Soul:

Different Colours Of Soul:
Welcome to the wonderful world of soul. On our musical journey in this episode, we’ll once again encounter a wide variety of sounds. The spectrum ranges from classic soul to abstract funk and psychedelic instrumental soul from the library music genre, all the way to Hammond organ-driven mod jazz.
We’ll kick things off with classic soul, and the first album highlight is “Tin Man” by John Edwards. The recordings, made around 1974, were originally intended to be his second album for the Aware label, but the label went bankrupt in 1975. The master tapes weren’t rediscovered until the mid-1990s, and the songs were released by Kent on the CD “Careful Man.” Now the album has been released on vinyl by Kent Records in its originally planned form. Great music that hasn’t lost any of its brilliance even after more than 50 years.
Next up are some recent soul releases, and we arrive at the Album of the Week: Thee Sinseers are here with their second album, “Love Stories.” The band delivers profound soul at its finest—wonderful mid-tempo grooves with emotional vocals and themes that touch the heart. “Love Stories” is an album like an unsent love letter that’s finally been delivered. Wonderful!
Kelly Finnigan’s fourth album is a collection of “Singles, B-Sides & Forgotten Gems.” It’s a perfect complement to his previous albums. The songs are all worthy of being released in album format. Very nice!
Now it’s time for a stylistic shift toward psychedelic soul and abstract funk from the library music genre. The new album “A Day Of Unrest” by Eleven 76 is an album that sounds like the soundtrack to a 1970s U.S. cop drama or Italian giallo films. Hazy sounds with vintage synths and heavy grooves that continue to unfold with every listen. Sounds exciting.
JJ Whitefield takes a completely different approach on his album “Exotic Moods.” The album is a wonderful collection of library music gems; while the tracks are short, they pack a punch. The songs are brimming with new ideas at every turn, often delivering the exotic moods promised in their titles. Great!
The final segment of this episode features Hammond organ-driven mod jazz. The musical focus here is the album “Live! At The Blueport Lounge” by the Bill Beau Trio, released on Mo-Jazz Records. Bill Beau plays the Hammond organ and vibraphone, accompanied by Joe Stafford on guitar and Lorenzo Green on drums. In the early 1960s, the trio performed regularly at the Blueport Lounge, where the recordings for this remarkable album were made. The album was first released in 1965 on Misty Records and has now been reissued by Mo-Jazz. A fantastic album!
Enjoy listening to this episode!
