A Soul Kaleidoscope
All Time Fave!

A Soul Kaleidoscope
In this episode, you’ll hear soul in a wide variety of forms, including some artists who have had a lasting influence on my musical taste. We’ll start with a few classic soul recordings, and then add a folk element to the mix.
Terry Callier is one of my favorite soul singers, and his soul music has always been heavily influenced by folk. I would have loved to attend one of his concerts, but unfortunately, it never worked out. Now BBE has released the album “Live Peace,” which features recordings from two concerts in Leeds from 1998 and 2001. These recordings give you a glimpse of the unique magic that unfolded at Terry Callier’s concerts.
Next up, we move seamlessly on to Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson, whose album “It’s Your World” was first released 50 years ago. The tracks—some recorded live and some in the studio—still sound as fresh as ever and haven’t lost any of their relevance. A magnificent album that’s well worth listening to again.
From 1976, we take a time warp straight to the present and to Us3’s new album. With their eleventh album, “Snap, Crackle & Bop!,” Us3 continue their now-legendary jazz-and-hip-hop fusion, which began in 1993 with the impressive album “Hand On The Torch.” The sound on the current album has some nostalgic 90s vibes. But the unmistakable Us3 groove—a blend of jazz and hip-hop—is refreshed with Afrobeats, Amapiano, Latin, Caribbean, and other global influences. Nice!
Earlier this year, one of my absolute favorite albums was reissued in an expanded 3LP special edition. It’s the landmark album “Café Bleu” by The Style Council. In addition to the original album, the special edition includes the debut EP “Introducing” with bonus tracks and a third LP featuring B-sides, demos, and alternative versions of songs from that era. An album that still sounds great even after 42 years. All-time favorite!
“Searching For The Young Soul Rebels,” the Dexys Midnight Runners’ debut album released in 1980, is one of the albums that has had a lasting influence on my musical taste. The band has been active again since 2012 under the shortened name Dexys and has now released an album under their old band name, Dexys Midnight Runners, for the first time since 1985. As a longtime fan of the band, I was really looking forward to the album “Love.” It lived up to my high expectations—the album once again features some very strong songs that really get under your skin. It’s just a shame that Kevin Rowland has announced that this is supposed to be their last album. We’ll see—maybe he’ll change his mind, because the album is fantastic. Record of the Week!
We’re continuing with some old heroes from the 1990s. On their debut album “Blue Lines,” Massive Attack sampled the beats from Wally Badarou’s song “Mambo” for their track “Daydreaming.” The original was released in 1984 on the album “Echoes,” which was reissued a few months ago. An excellent solo work by keyboardist Wally Badarou, who worked primarily as a studio musician. He can be heard on albums by numerous well-known artists, including Grace Jones, Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club, Manu Dibango, Joe Cocker, Mick Jagger, and many others.
Enjoy listening to this episode!
