Der Albumtitel „Synonym“ passt also ziemlich gut.

A colorful mix of soulful sounds!
In this episode, you’ll hear a diverse compilation of different styles from the Soul Unlimited universe.
We kick things off with a round of grooves influenced by Mediterranean and Asian sounds, until we arrive in the Philippines with Thandii x Regalado. The album “Coco Okayo” was recorded at Wild Grass Studios in Manila. The album spans various genres—from soul to post-punk disco to trip-hop—and is inspired by the Manila Sound movement of the 1970s. The band defies easy categorization, yet despite these diverse influences, they manage to create a cohesive sound. A very interesting and compelling album!
The next featured topic is Ed Motta’s new album. After more than a decade of releasing English-language albums, he has now recorded another Portuguese-language album, “Toc-Toc.” Musically, he drew inspiration from 1980s electro-funk. Ed Motta succeeds in blending two completely different genres of contemporary music into a cohesive whole. Electronic music and traditional songwriting are usually mutually exclusive, yet that is precisely what he brings together on “Toc-Toc.” His songs aren’t electronic music in the strict sense, as they follow a different dramatic structure, but everything is recorded using a drum machine and a bass synthesizer. The melodic and harmonic progressions also reveal an undeniable jazz influence. With “Tic-Toc,” Ed Motta has created an album that captivates with its minimalist approach and sounds like a tender declaration of love for the beauty of the world. Simply magnificent—it’s the album of the week!
French-Swiss saxophonist Leon Phal has released his fourth album, “Bodies & Ideas.” As early as 2023, on his album “Stress Killer,” he began pushing the boundaries of jazz and integrating powerful electronic beats and grooves into his music. He continues down this path in a captivating way on his new album. The fantastic songs also feature elements of neo-soul and hip-hop and are accessible to a broader audience than the traditional jazz crowd. Very nice!
Meshell Ndegeocello surprises with her new album “Synonym,” as it’s an entire album of cover versions. The album title “Synonym” fits quite well, then. A synonym refers to two different words with the same meaning. Applied to music, this means it’s the same song, yet the versions sound completely different. All the cover versions are sung as same-sex duets. The selection of covered songs spans a wide variety of genres and eras. The versions Meshell Ndegeocello creates are unique. Sometimes you recognize a song after just a few opening bars, and sometimes it takes exactly those few bars for it to suddenly become unrecognizable. An excellent album with great cover versions that breathe new life into the songs.
Over 30 years ago, Michael Reinboth launched the compilation series *Future Sounds Of Jazz*. The 16th installment has now been released, for which he brought Michael Rütten on board. The two have put together an interesting selection of songs that is both surprising and inspiring.
So it’s fitting that Emanuela Der Luca and Bobby Mhark have invited Michael Rütten to the Schlachthaus Tübingen on October 24 for „Future Sounds Of Jazz“. The event is part of the Jazz and Classical Music Days and offers a great opportunity to experience the danceable side of this musical spectrum: from jazz and soul to club sounds—past, present, and future.
Enjoy listening to this episode!
