Different Colours Of Soul:
Wunderbar!
Die neuste Veröffentlichung beim exquisiten spanischen Soul-Label Soul4Real Records ist die Compilation „We Should Really Be In Love“.
Exzellent!

Different Colours Of Soul:
The musical spectrum ranges from library-style grooves to abstract funk and classic soul from the late 1960s to the present day.
For our first album feature, we’re listening to “Ellroy Vs. L.A.,” the new album by Calibro 35. The Italian band has always taken a very cinematic approach to their work, and this time they’ve actually composed a soundtrack for a documentary about the famous Los Angeles crime writer James Ellroy. The music is inspired by Ellroy’s works, and Calibro 35 translates his fictional and real-life mythologies into rhythm, tension, and groove. With cinematic crime funk, psychedelia, and hypnotic grooves, they conjure up a city that never truly sleeps, but instead pulses endlessly in the darkness.
Jeff Silverman, aka J. Dynamite, is one of the creative forces behind the soul and funk scene who has been working behind the scenes for decades. He began his career as label manager at Soul Fire Records, where he also released his first album and several singles with the band JD & The Evil Dynamites. Additionally, he co-founded the label Truth & Soul Records with Leon Michels. Together with Leon Michels, Jeff Dynamite produced the hit album “Good Things” for Aloe Blacc, which included the mega-hit “I Need A Dollar.” After Truth & Soul Records closed, he founded Mighty Eye Records, which will now release his solo album “The Powers That Be.” The songs Jeff Dynamite has recorded go beyond the increasingly familiar clichés of contemporary “cinematic soul.” Instead, he has created an album centered on uptempo breaks, melodic ideas, and a constant sense of movement. Music designed just as much for dancers as for attentive listeners. Great—an all-around compelling album!
The image of the empty hallway on the cover of Karate Boogaloo’s new album “Access All Areas” is a surprisingly good indication of the sound the band presents on this album. Karate Boogaloo have managed to deliver an album that’s funky but also feels a bit desolate. It’s a kind of funk music for more intimate, melancholic moments—partly stripped-down, but also partly relaxed and laid-back: the kind of funk you’re more likely to listen to at home than to party to in a club! The instruments often have this pleasantly smoldering atmosphere, especially the organ, which never blares loudly but instead glows slowly. These qualities are often found in other instruments as well, although the drums are always powerful enough to sound funky. An album that gets better with every listen. Fabulous—it’s the album of the week!
After so much instrumental music and abstract funk & soul grooves, it’s high time for some classic soul sounds. The compilation “Eccentric Sweet Soul” has plenty to offer that really gets under your skin. Thirteen songs brimming with unfiltered romantic expression—broken and mended hearts, as well as the painful emptiness in between—presented with disarming sincerity. Enveloped in lush, gentle strings, delicate vocal harmonies, and laid-back rhythms, while breathy falsetto voices float above the polished production. Vulnerability takes center stage here. Wonderful!
The latest release from the exquisite Spanish soul label Soul4Real Records is the compilation *We Should Really Be In Love*. It is Soul4Real’s second release, focusing primarily on songs from the Malaco label in Jackson, Mississippi. The compilation is yet another impressive example of the breadth of soul music. With tracks spanning from the ’70s to the new millennium and covering a musical spectrum ranging from deep, bluesy ballads to disco beats, this LP offers something for every soul lover to enjoy. Great!
The rare Detroit funk-soul LP “Here I Am Baby” was recorded by Lady Jane during a turbulent period in Detroit in the late 1970s. She worked with the renowned sound engineer Eric Morgeson and a studio band on material that had largely been written by her husband at the time. The album remained virtually unknown for decades, as most copies were destroyed in a flood and the master tapes were in the possession of her ex-husband. A chance discovery by collector David Haffner in 2022 set the reissue of the album in motion, which has now been released by Athens Of The North. Remastered from the recovered audio tapes, “Here I Am Baby” showcases Lady Jane’s extraordinary voice in a captivating blend of soul, funk, and disco. Excellent!
Following a series of singles on the Space Grapes and Chuwanaga labels—which were celebrated worldwide by trendsetters and connoisseurs alike—Jéroboam now presents its long-awaited debut LP on Favorite Recordings. From boogie-funk to 2-step soul crossover, Jéroboam delivers eight rousing songs that combine razor-sharp compositions with authentic and relatable lyrics. When you listen to the songs, you can vividly imagine the 11-piece live band from Paris putting on an explosive performance on stage. Enjoy listening to this episode!
