Seit Gabriel Roth aka Bosco Mann 2020 das Label Penrose Records gegründet hat, haben zahlreiche Bands aus der blühenden kalifornischen Souldies-Szene auf diesem Label ihre ersten Singles veröffentlicht. Diese Veröffentlichungen hatten einen wesentlichen Anteil am Revival des Sweet Soul Sounds. Inzwischen haben einige dieser Bands ihre Debüt-Alben veröffentlicht. Allen voran Thee Sacred Souls, die bereits zwei hervorragende Alben vorzuweisen haben. Die neuste Veröffentlichung aus dieser Szene kommt von The Altons, die ebenfalls bei Penrose gestartet sind. Das Album „Heartache In Room 14“ ist beim Mutter-Label Daptone erschienen und von Bosco Mann produziert worden. Die Gesangsduette von Adriana Flores und Brian Ponce, die sich den Leadgesang teilen, geben den Songs der Band eine romantische Qualität, die hervorragend von der atmosphärischen und dezent arrangierten Musik der Band begleitet werden. Großartig, die Platte der Woche!
Die Excitements aus Barcelona sind bereits seit 2009 aktiv und haben gerade erst ihr fünftes Album veröffentlicht. Es ist das zweite mit der neuen Sängerin Kissia San. Mit ihr ist der Sound der Band etwas souliger geworden und ist nun nicht mehr so stark Rhythm’n’Blues orientiert. Die Produktion von Daptone-Records Co-Gründer Neil Sugarman (The Dap-Kings, Sugarman 3) hat hierzu sicher ebenfalls beigetragen. Das Album „Hard Times“ klingt sehr abwechslungsreich und hat einige sehr starke Highlights vorzuweisen, wie zum Beispiel den Song „This Bond Is A Cruise“, der mein absoluter Favorit auf dem Album ist. Schönen 60ts Soul gibt es von The Lovelites, einer Girl-Group aus Chicago, die von 1967 bis 1973 aktiv war. Beim japanischen Label P-Vine ist eine Compilation ihrer Singles erschienen, die sie auf ihrem eigenen Label Lovelite Records veröffentlicht hatten. Als Zugabe werden noch drei bisher unveröffentlichte Songs mitgereicht.
Das Label Soul4real Records aus Bilbao habe ich hier schon öfters mit interessanten Veröffentlichungen vorgestellt. Dieses mal ist das Sub-Label Jai Alai Records mit der fabelhaften Compilation „One More Chance“ an der Reihe. Auf Jai Alai steht ein modernerer Soul Sound im Fokus. Auf „One More Chance“ gibt es einige bisher noch nie veröffentlichter Songs, sowie bisher nur auf CD oder auf sehr raren Vinyl-Versionen veröffentlichte Songs zu hören. Die zusammenstellung ist stimmig und die Songs haben eine bemerkenswerte Qualität. Sehr schön!
In der zweiten Stunde dieser Episode geht es um Roy Ayers, der am 4. März im Alter von 84 Jahren gestorben ist. Seine Musik wird unvergessen bleiben und sein Einfluss war und wird auch in der Zukunft von großer Bedeutung sein.

Since Gabriel Roth aka Bosco Mann founded the Penrose Records label in 2020, numerous bands from the flourishing Californian Souldies scene have released their first singles on this label. These releases played a significant role in the revival of the sweet soul sound. In the meantime, some of these bands have released their debut albums. First and foremost Thee Sacred Souls, who already have two excellent albums to their name. The latest release from this scene comes from The Altons, who also started out on the Penrose label. The album “Heartache In Room 14” was released by their parent label Daptone and produced by Bosco Mann. The vocal duets of Adriana Flores and Brian Ponce, who share the lead vocals, give the band’s songs a romantic quality, which are superbly accompanied by the band’s atmospheric and subtly arranged music. Great, the record of the week!

On “One More Chance” you can hear some songs that have never been released before, as well as songs that have only been released on CD or on very rare vinyl versions. The compilation is coherent and the songs have a remarkable quality. Very nice!
