Jazz, Not Jazz?
Jazz ist der rote Faden in dieser Episode, doch nicht immer steht dieser klar im Vordergrund. Auch andere Elemente wie Soul, Funk und sogar auch Pop können mal mehr oder weniger intensiv eine Rolle spielen. Die neuen Songs von Feed LA und The Mighty Mocambos zu Beginn machen dies deutlich und kündigen zugleich spannende Alben an, die in den nächsten Wochen erscheinen werden.
Ein erster Höhepunkt ist das neue Album „1978: Revenge Of The Dragon von José James. Er beschäftigt sich ein weiteres Mal mit den 1970er Jahren und speziell das Jahr 1978, sein Geburtsjahr, taucht erneut im Albumtitel auf. Ein solides Album mit einigen starken Eigenkompositionen und auch einigen Coverversionen.
Gerardo Frisina ist mit einem neuen Doppelalbum dabei, das auf zwei separaten LPs als Volume 1 & 2 erschienen ist. Seit 2001 ist er eine feste Größe beim Label Schema und arbeitet an seiner Fusion aus Jazz, Funk, Latin und elektronischen Grooves. Auch auf „In Sight Vol. 1 & 2“ ist ihm dies wieder überzeugend gelungen.
Relativ neu in der italienischen Jazz-Szene ist das Trio Collettivo Imaginario, die mit ihrem zweiten „Album „Oltreoceano“ ein starkes Werk vorgelegt haben. Ein überzeugendes Album und eine spannende Band, von der wir sicher noch einiges hören werden.
Mit dem Nādt Orchestra ist eine weitere neue italienische Jazzcombo mit von der Partie und mit ihrem Debütalbum „Dualism“ hat die Band aus Bologna ein bemerkenswertes Werk vorgelegt. Danach geht es mit Cinephonic weiter, einer Band aus Ottawa. Die Kanadische Band hat vor kurzem ihr drittes Album „Refuge“ veröffentlicht, bei dem Bandleader Pierre Chretien die Idee hatte in einer reduzierten Jazz-Trio Besetzung zu arbeiten. Die so eingespielten Songs wurden anschließend mit zusätzlichen Drumbeats, cineastischen Samples und dezenten Turntablism-Effekten ergänzt. Das verleiht dem Ganzen eine zusätzliche Dimension und unterscheidet sich grundlegend vom Sound der ersten beiden Alben.
Auf die Vinyl-Ausgabe von Chien Chien Lu’s Album „Built In System“ habe ich schon lange gewartet. Nun ist es endlich soweit und dieses wunderbare Album der außerordentlich talentierten Vibraphonistin Chien Chien Lu kann hier vorgestellt werden. Das Album wurde live in New York eingespielt und ist exzellent besetzt, mit Jeremy Pelt an der Trompete, Richie Goods am Bass und Allan Mednard an den Drums. Acht Kompositionen von Chien Chien Lu, die allesamt hervorragend sind. Das Album der Woche!
Neues gibt es auch auf dem Label Jazzman Records und zwar vom schweizer Saxophonisten Gilles Torrent. Sein Album „Buleria“ ist ausgesprochen gut und empfehleswert.
Auf das zweite Album von Alma Naidu dürften viele schon mit Spannung gewartet haben. Die junge Sängerin und Pianistin hat es schon mit ihrem Debüt in die Top 10 der deutschen Jazz-Charts geschafft. Ihr Album „Redefine“ hat sie selbst produziert und es ist sehr schön geworden. Jazz mit einem starken Pop-Appeal, der Charme hat!
Zum Schluss gibt es noch einen Song von Mark Millington und seinem Debüt-Album „Picture This“ das ebenfalls hörenswert ist.

Jazz, Not Jazz?
Jazz is the common thread in this episode, but it is not always clearly in the foreground. Other elements such as soul, funk and even pop can also play a more or less intense role. The new songs by Feed LA and The Mighty Mocambos at the beginning make this clear and also herald exciting albums that will be released in the coming weeks.
A first highlight is the new album “1978: Revenge Of The Dragon” by José James. He once again deals with the 1970s and the year 1978, the year of his birth, appears again in the album title. A solid album with some strong original compositions and a few cover versions.
Gerardo Frisina is back with a new double album, released on two separate LPs as Volumes 1 & 2. He has been a permanent fixture on the Schema label since 2001, working on his fusion of jazz, funk, Latin and electronic grooves. On “In Sight Vol. 1 & 2” he has once again succeeded in doing so convincingly.
Relatively new to the Italian jazz scene is the trio Collettivo Imaginario, who have produced a strong work with their second album “Oltreoceano”. A convincing album and an exciting band that we will certainly be hearing a lot more of.
The Nādt Orchestra is another new Italian jazz combo and with their debut album “Dualism”, the band from Bologna has produced a remarkable work. Then it’s on to Cinephonic, a band from Ottawa. The Canadian band recently released their third album “Refuge”, for which bandleader Pierre Chretien had the idea of working with a reduced jazz trio line-up. The songs recorded in this way were then supplemented with additional drum beats, cinematic samples and subtle turntablism effects. This gives the whole thing an extra dimension and differs fundamentally from the sound of the first two albums.

There is also something new on the Jazzman Records label from Swiss saxophonist Gilles Torrent. His album “Buleria” is extremely good and worth recommending.
Many people have probably been eagerly awaiting Alma Naidu’s second album. The young singer and pianist has already made it into the top 10 of the German jazz charts with her debut. She produced her album “Redefine” herself and it has turned out beautifully. Jazz with a strong pop appeal that has charm!
Finally, there’s a song by Mark Millington and his debut album “Picture This”, which is also worth listening to.
