Wir begeben uns wieder auf einen neuen Streifzug durch die musikalischen Gefilde des Soul. Das Spektrum reicht von cinematischen Soul-Sounds und instrumental Funk über Soul-Jazz, Gospel-Soul bis hin zu brasilianischer Musik mit Soul-Appeal und psychedelischen Soul-Sounds. Definitiv ein abwechslungsreiches und vielschichtiges Programm.
Es geht los mit eine Runde cinematischer Soul-Sounds, zum Teil mit einem dezenten Hip-Hop Appeal, um dann direkt mit gefühlvollem Soul-Jazz weiterzumachen. Das erste Album-Highlight ist „Mind Games“ von Roland Haynes Jr. & Phenix und ist bereits Ende 2024 erschienen. Die Aufnahmen sind jedoch schon in den frühen 80er Jahren entstanden. Damals erschien auch die einzige Single die Roland Haynes Jr. bis dato gemacht hatte. Der Song „Mind Games“ hat auch dem Album, das bei Athens Of The North erschienen ist, den Titel gegeben. Das Team von Athens Of The North hat aus den Bändern, die Roland Haynes damals aufgenommen hatte und die in seinem Archiv unveröffentlicht lagerten, ein superbes Album zusammen gestellt. Musik die es definitiv verdient hat endlich veröffentlicht zu werden. Sehr schön!
Das Sure Fire Soul Ensemble ist schon seit 2015 aktiv und haben vor kurzem ihr fünftes Studioalbum „Gemini“ veröffentlicht. Ich bin schon seit ihrem ersten Album ein großer Fan des instrumentalen Soul & Funk Sounds der Band. Auch auf ihrem neuen Album überzeugen sie wieder auf ganzer Linie. Außerdem haben sie ihr stilistisches Spektrum etwas in Richtung Jazz erweitert, was man beim Track „Contemplation“ sehr schön hören kann. Das macht das neue Album wieder zu einer abwechslungsreichen und kurzweiligen Angelegenheit. Das gefällt mir sehr gut und ist das Album der Woche!
Eine Offenbarung musikalischer Art ist das Debütalbum von Annie & The Caldwells. Gospel und tanzbarer Soul gehen hier eine spannende Symbiose ein, welche die Kirchengemeinde und die Tänzer*Innen im Club gleichermaßen beglücken kann. Großartig!
Etwas entspannter, aber dennoch lässig groovend sind die Songs die Shane Sato für sein Debütalbum „Until We Meet Again“ geschaffen hat. Ursprünglich hat er das Album Ende Juli 2024 nur digital veröffentlicht und nachdem es innerhalb von 6 Monaten über 700.000 Streams hatte ist auch bei zahlreichen Fans der Wunsch einer physikalischen Veröffentlichung entstanden. Dies veranlasste ihn Ende März 2025 eine limitierte Vinyl-Auflage zu veröffentlichen, was definitiv zu begrüßen ist.
Adrian Younge ist derzeit einer der aktivsten Produzenten. Im Jahr startete er die Trilogie „Something About April“ die er nun mit der dritten Folge komplettiert hat. Während sich die ersten beiden Folgen der Trilogie auf den cinematischen Soul des Black America konzentrierten, verbindet die dritte Folge dies mit den psychedelischen Klängen des Brasiliens der 60er Jahre und die Gesangsaufnahmen der portugiesischen Texte wurden in Sao Paolo eingespielt. Ein großartiges Finale dieser bemerkenswerten Trilogie!
Mehr cinematischen Soul gibt es von Lance Ferguson, bekannt durch die australische Band The Bamboos. Er hat einen neuen Soundtrack für den lange verschollenen Film „L’Ocean De Toi“ vom französischen Regisseur Leroi Alarie gemacht. Ob man den Film hierzulande in den Kinos zu sehen bekommt ist mir nicht bekannt, doch den Soundtrack gibt es auf jeden Fall und der klingt recht ansprechend.
Mit der 23. Folge der hoch interessanten Jazz Is Dead Reihe gibt ein zweites Album in dieser Episode das maßgeblich von Adrian Younge gestaltet wurde. Hier hat es sich mit dem brasilianischen Künstler Hyldon zusammen getan. Hyldon gilt, neben Tim Maia und Cassiano, als einer der Vorreiter des Brasilianischen Soul. Somit sind beste Voraussetzungen für ein weiteres spannendes Album in der Jazz Is Dead Reihe gegeben. Adrian Younge hat dies mit seiner ausgewiesen Expertise, wie zu erwarten, auch hervorragend produziert.
Zum Schluss gibt es noch eine Reihe neuer und spannender Singles, wobei ich hier Peki Momes neue Single „Yildiz“, eine Version des Marcos Valle Klassikers „Estrelar“, ganz besonders hervorheben möchte. Genial! Viel Vergnügen beim Anhören dieser Episode!

We are once again embarking on a new foray into the musical realms of soul. The spectrum ranges from cinematic soul sounds and instrumental funk to soul jazz, gospel soul and Brazilian music with soul appeal and psychedelic soul sounds. Definitely a varied and multi-layered program.
It starts with a round of cinematic soul sounds, sometimes with a subtle hip-hop appeal, and then continues directly with soulful soul-jazz. The first album highlight is “Mind Games” by Roland Haynes Jr. & Phenix, which was released at the end of 2024. However, the recordings were made in the early 80s. The only single that Roland Haynes Jr. had made to date was also released at that time. The song “Mind Games” also gave the album, which was released by Athens Of The North, its title. The team at Athens Of The North have put together a superb album from the tapes that Roland Haynes recorded back then and that were stored in his archive unreleased. Music that definitely deserves to be released at last. Very nice!
The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble has been active since 2015 and recently released their fifth studio album “Gemini”. I’ve been a big fan of the band’s instrumental soul & funk sound since their first album. Their new album is once again convincing across the board. They have also expanded their stylistic spectrum a little in the direction of jazz, which can be heard very clearly on the track “Contemplation”. This makes the new album another varied and entertaining affair. I like it very much and it’s the album of the week!
The debut album by Annie & The Caldwells is a musical revelation. Gospel and danceable soul enter into an exciting symbiosis here, which can delight the church congregation and the dancers in the club in equal measure. Great!
The songs that Shane Sato created for his debut album “Until We Meet Again” are a little more relaxed, but still casually grooving. He originally only released the album digitally at the end of July 2024 and after it had over 700,000 streams within 6 months, numerous fans also requested a physical release. This prompted him to release a limited vinyl edition at the end of March 2025, which is definitely to be welcomed.
Adrian Younge is currently one of the most active producers. Last year, he launched the trilogy “Something About April”, which he has now completed with the third installment. While the first two episodes of the trilogy focused on the cinematic soul of Black America, the third episode combines this with the psychedelic sounds of Brazil in the 60s and the vocal recordings of the Portuguese lyrics were recorded in Sao Paolo. A great finale to this remarkable trilogy!
More cinematic soul is provided by Lance Ferguson, known from the Australian band The Bamboos. He has created a new soundtrack for the long-lost film “L’Ocean De Toi” by French director Leroi Alarie.
